Tonia's POV
The sight of her standing there made my chest feel like it was caving in on itself. Every breath became a struggle as I watched Gia stare at me through the cold metal bars that separated us.
Her eyes held nothing but pain and betrayal, looking at me like I was some kind of monster she had never seen before.
"Gia," I whispered, my fingers wrapping around the steel bars.
She stayed far back from the cell, keeping herself at a distance as if I might somehow reach through and hurt her too.
Time crawled by in silence. She wouldn't speak to me, wouldn't even acknowledge that I had called her name.
"Gia, please listen to me. I didn't do this thing they're saying I did. You have to believe me."
Her face remained completely blank, like she was looking through me instead of at me.
