Chapter 29 - Breaking Point

The door clicked shut behind Tony, and I stood frozen in my entryway, my thin pajama shorts suddenly feeling too revealing, too vulnerable. The apartment air felt charged, electric with everything left unsaid.

"Katherine." Luca's voice was soft behind me. "Are you alright?"

I wasn't. My hands trembled as I closed the door behind me, and my heart pounded so loudly in my throat that I had trouble breathing. Tony had been devastated - his unbuttoned shirt, black circles underneath his green eyes, knuckles split and bloody. That was what I had done to him. Or maybe we had exchanged that damage.

"I need you to leave." The words came out flat.

"What?" Luca moved closer to me, his hand warmly touching my bare shoulder. "Katherine, you're-"

"Please," I turned to face him, hugging myself. The oversized t-shirt didn't conceal the way my body was shaking. "I need to be alone."

His dark eyes searched mine, and I saw the instant understanding dawn. "You still love him," he said.
