Chapter 27 - Chapter 25: Satoru Gojo

The train car hummed as it moved toward the city center.

Saturday morning sunlight poured through the windows, making the dust motes dance in the air.

Wakana sat with his hands resting on his knees, his posture straight.

Beside him, Marin was vibrating with a quiet, restless energy.

She was wearing a simple white sundress for now, but the large suitcase at their feet held the work of the last several weeks.

"Wakana-kun, look," Marin said, pointing out the window at the clear horizon. "The sky is that exact shade of blue. It is just like the eyes you made for the Gojo character. It feels like a good sign, right?"

Wakana looked at the sky and then back at her. "It is a very nice day for a convention. I was worried it might be too humid for the wig, but the breeze should help."

Marin laughed and leaned a bit closer to him.

Her shoulder brushed against his. "You are always worrying about the technical stuff. Just for today, you have to try and be the arrogant Satoru. No worrying about humidity or loose threads. You are the strongest sorcerer, remember?"

"I will try," Wakana promised with a small smile. "But I think I will feel more like him once I actually have the uniform on. Right now, I just feel like I am carrying a very expensive suitcase."

"It is not just a suitcase," Marin corrected him. She looked down at his hands. "It is our hard work. And I am so happy we are doing this as a pair. I used to see pairs at events and feel a little bit jealous. It always looked like they were having so much more fun than the solo cosplayers."

Wakana felt a warmth in his chest that had nothing to do with the summer heat. "I am glad I could be that person for you, Marin. I was nervous when you first asked; after all, I'm usually the artist and not the presented artwork, but seeing how much you love these characters makes me want to do my best for them too."

They reached their stop ten minutes later.

The station was already crowded with people carrying similar suitcases and garment bags.

As they walked toward the event hall, they spotted a familiar group of faces near the main entrance.

"There they are!" Nowa called out, waving her arm frantically. She was standing with Daia, Rune, Kensei, and Shiki. Takeru and the others were a few steps behind, looking around at the growing crowd.

Kensei whistled as Wakana and Marin approached. "Man, Wakana, you actually look like you're ready. That height of yours is really something."

Wakana shrugged. "I exercise plenty, Kensei."

"Sure you do," Daia giggled, stepping up to Marin. "You look ready to go, Marin-chan! Is the secret weapon in the bag?"

Marin grinned and patted the suitcase. "The best version of Riko Amanai you have ever seen is in here. And wait until you see Wakana. He is going to break the internet."

"I just hope the photos turn out well," Shiki said, adjusting his glasses. "I brought my good lens. I want to make sure we capture the texture of that twill you were talking about, Wakana."

"Thank you, Shiki. That would be a big help," Wakana said.

The group moved toward the entrance together.

They were all there to see the debut of something special.

Once they were inside, the chaos of the convention took over. The smell of hairspray and the sound of excited shouting filled the hall. Wakana and Marin headed toward the changing area.

"I will meet you at the big pillars in the west hall in thirty minutes?" Marin asked, pausing at the door to the women's section.

"Thirty minutes. I will be there," Wakana nodded.

In the men's changing room, Wakana found a small corner to set up.

He took the midnight blue uniform out of the bag. He handled it with care, feeling the weight of the interfacing in the collar.

As he changed, he noticed a few other Jujutsu Kaisen cosplayers nearby. One was dressed as Nanami, struggling with a tie.

"Do you need a hand with that?" Wakana asked instinctively.

The other boy looked up, surprised. "Oh, yeah. This clip-on is acting up."

Wakana stepped over and fixed it with practiced ease. "There. The tension was just a bit off."

"Thanks, man. Whoa, you're pretty tall. Are you doing Gojo Satoru?"

"The younger version," Wakana said, stepping back to his own spot.

"You've got the build and looks for it. Good luck out there."

Wakana smiled and finished dressing.

He styled his hair back, using the product he had practiced with.

Finally, he reached for the small, round sunglasses. He slid them onto his nose.

The world became a bit darker, a bit cooler. He looked in the mirror and saw he had finally transformed into his parallel world counterpart.

He picked up his bag and walked out.

The walk to the west hall was an experience. People were already turning their heads. He heard a few whispers of "Gojo!" and "He's so tall and handsome!" but he kept his gaze forward. He was looking for Marin.

He saw her from a distance. She was standing by the pillars, and for a second, his heart stopped.

She looked perfect.

The navy blue wig styled by the others from A I R S Salon was styled exactly like the anime, the soft waves hitting her shoulders just right. The white headband with the wire-enforced bow sat perfectly on her crown.

She was wearing the Riko Amanai school uniform, the white top bright against the blue of her skirt. She looked like a girl from a memory, something precious and fleeting.

She spotted him and her whole face lit up. She didn't run this time; she stayed in character, giving him a bright, energetic wave that was pure Riko.

"Satoru! You're late!" she called out, her voice playful and loud enough to draw the attention of everyone nearby.

Wakana walked up to her, adopting a relaxed, hands-in-pockets stance. He looked down at her through the dark lenses. "The strongest sorcerer doesn't worry about time, Riko."

Marin giggled, breaking character for just a second. "Wakana-kun, you actually did it! You sound just like him!"

"The glasses help," he whispered, leaning in closer. "But you... Marin, you look incredible. The wig is perfect. Riho-san really did an amazing job with the layers."

"Right? And the makeup! I used the eye tape as we practiced. Do my eyes look rounder?" She tilted her head up, looking at him with wide, blue contacts.

"They do. You look exactly like her. It is almost a little bit scary how well it worked," he said.

A photographer approached them, looking hesitant. "Excuse me? Are you two a pair? Could I get a few shots?"

Marin immediately took charge. "Of course! What kind of poses do you want?"

"Could we do some of the school sequence vibes? Happy and carefree?"

They spent the next twenty minutes posing.

Wakana found that acting as Gojo was easier when he focused on protecting Marin.

He stood behind her, leaning against a pillar while she sat on a bench, looking up at him with an ice cream prop he had made.

In another shot, they walked side by side, Marin laughing while Wakana looked off to the side with an arrogant smirk.

The friends joined them a little later. Kensei and Shiki were speechless for a moment.

"Dude," Kensei finally said, walking around Wakana. "I knew you were tall and handsome, but this is ridiculous. You look like a model."

"The lines on the jacket are perfect," Shiki added, already snapping photos. "The way the light hits the fabric... it doesn't have that weird shine that the cheap ones have. It looks like a real military-style uniform."

Nowa was hugging Marin. "Marin-chan! You are so cute! I want to take you home!"

"I told you Wakana was a genius!" Marin said, her voice full of pride. "He even put a wire in this headband so I could pose properly without the bow falling off!"

"A wire?" Rune asked, leaning in to look. "That is so smart. It looks so natural."

As the day went on, they moved through the halls.

Wakana noticed that Marin was getting a lot of requests for photos.

He stayed close, always making sure she had water and that no one was being too pushy. It was the usual "protector" role he had, whether in action or outside of it.

During a break, they found a quiet spot in the outdoor courtyard. The wind was blowing gently, ruffling the navy blue strands of Marin's wig.

"Are you tired?" Wakana asked, handing her a bottle of tea.

"My feet are a little sore, but I am too happy to care," Marin said, taking a sip. She looked at him, her expression turning soft. "Everyone was so nice today. And they all kept saying how good we looked together."

Wakana looked at the ground, feeling a little bashful. "They were just impressed by your acting, Marin."

"No, it wasn't just that," she insisted. She reached out and touched his sleeve. "Wakana-kun, when you look at me while we're posing... it feels real. Like you really are looking out for me."

Wakana went quiet. He took off the sunglasses for a moment, letting her see his actual eyes. "That is because I am, Marin. The costume is just an excuse. I really do want to make sure you're okay."

Marin's breath hitched. She looked away, her cheeks turning a soft pink that matched the edges of her original hair. "You shouldn't say things like that so easily. It is bad for my heart."

"Is it?" he asked, genuinely worried. "I'm sorry. I just wanted to be honest."

Marin laughed, a small, shaky sound. "Don't be sorry. I like it when you're honest. It is just... it makes me very happy. More than I can say."

They sat in silence for a while, just enjoying the breeze. The "Confession Barrier" felt like it was made of glass now, transparent and thin. They didn't need to break it yet. The feeling of just being there, side by side in the sun, was enough.

"You know," Marin said, looking up at the sky again. "I'm glad we picked these characters. Riko deserved a day where nothing bad happened. A day where she just got to hang out with her friends and look at the blue sky."

"We gave her that," Wakana said. "And we gave it to ourselves too."

Marin smiled and leaned her head on his shoulder. The wig felt soft against his neck. "Yeah. We did."

They stayed like that until Kensei and the others came looking for them, shouting about a limited edition figure drop in the next hall.

The rest of the afternoon was a blur of more photos, more laughter, and more shared glances.

By the time the sun started to set, they were both exhausted.

They changed back into their regular clothes, carefully packing the uniforms and wigs away. The transition back to being "normal" students felt strange, but the connection between them stayed.

On the train ride back, the group was loud and rowdy, recounting the best moments of the day.

Kensei was showing off a prize he had won at a booth, and Nowa was scrolling through the hundreds of photos Shiki had taken.

Wakana and Marin sat at the end of the bench, a little bit apart from the noise.

"I'm going to sleep for twelve hours," Marin murmured, her eyes fluttering shut.

"You earned it," Wakana said.

She reached over and found his hand. She didn't hook a pinky this time. She just rested her palm against his, her fingers curling slightly around the side of his hand. It was a simple touch.

Wakana didn't move. He let her hold his hand, the rhythmic clicking of the train tracks acting as a lullaby.

He looked at the reflection in the window. He saw the two of them, tired and messy and happy.

He thought about the secret language of thread and fold he had studied for so long. He realized that the most beautiful architecture wasn't made of silk or satin.

It was made of moments like this, built one honest word and one shared look at a time.

When they reached their station, the group began to split up.

"See you Monday!" Nowa called out, waving to them both.

"Great job today, Wakana!" Kensei yelled, giving a thumbs up before heading toward his platform.

Suddenly, it was just the two of them again. The night air was cool, a welcome relief from the heat of the convention hall.

"Do you want me to walk you to your place?" Wakana asked, looking at the heavy bags she was carrying.

"I can handle it," Marin said, but then she paused. "Actually, yeah. I don't want the day to end just yet."

They walked to her apartment complex in silence. The streetlights cast long, golden pools of light on the pavement. When they reached the entrance, Marin turned to him.

"Thank you, Wakana-kun. For everything. The costume, the experience, the looking out for me. It was the best day of my life."

"It was the best day for me too, Marin," he said.

She leaned up and gave him a quick, soft hug. It was over in a second, but her scent stayed with him.

"Goodnight, Satoru," she whispered with a wink.

"Goodnight, Riko," he laughed.

As he walked home alone, Wakana looked up at the moon.

It was a silver sliver in the dark sky, beautiful and constant.

He realized that he wasn't afraid of the future anymore.

He didn't know when the barrier between them would finally fall, but he knew that as long as he was with her, he had all the strength he needed to wait.

He arrived at the Gojo residence and went straight to the workshop. He took out the Satoru Gojo uniform and hung it up.

He looked at the empty space beside it where the Riko uniform would eventually go once Marin brought it over for cleaning.

"I'll always be looking out for you."
