I barely slept.
The message from Mick kept replaying in my head.
You should stop protecting him.
But I wasn't going to.
Not anymore.
The next morning, I opened my laptop and started going through everything I had saved from the past few weeks.
Messages.
Emails.
Documents.
Anything that could explain what was happening to Leo.
Most of it was useless.
Until I found something strange.
An email.
Sent three weeks before the investigation began.
The sender's address looked unfamiliar.
But the attachment caught my attention.
AYDEN CORPORATION — TRANSACTION RECORDS
My heart skipped.
I opened it.
There were several financial records inside.
At first, everything looked normal.
Then I noticed something.
The dates.
Several transactions had been made before Leo's authorization supposedly existed.
I stared at the screen.
"That can't be right..."
I checked again.
Same dates.
Same accounts.
Same signatures.
Someone had copied Leo's authorization.
But there was something else.
A tiny detail at the bottom of the document.
Internal Access ID: 47-B.
I had no idea what it meant.
But I knew someone who might.
Kelvin.
I immediately called him.
He answered after a few rings.
"Lana?"
"I found something."
His tone changed.
"What?"
"I think I found evidence that the financial records were manipulated."
There was a long silence.
"Send it to me."
"I already did."
A few seconds passed.
Then I heard him inhale sharply.
"Lana..."
"What?"
"This access ID."
"What about it?"
"I've seen it before."
My heart started beating faster.
"Where?"
"In the company's internal security records."
I stood up.
"Whose ID is it?"
Kelvin didn't answer immediately.
"Kelvin?"
His voice finally came through.
"That's the problem."
"What?"
"That ID belonged to someone who supposedly left the company two years ago."
I frowned.
"Who?"
Another pause.
Then he said the name.
And suddenly...
Everything made sense.
Chloe.
I stared at the laptop screen.
"No..."
Kelvin's voice became serious.
"Don't confront her yet."
"Why?"
"Because if Chloe really had access, she may not be working alone."
My heart sank.
Mick.
Of course.
I looked back at the documents.
For weeks, I had believed the enemy was outside Leo's life.
But maybe...
They had been much closer than we realized.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
Unknown:
You're getting closer.
My blood ran cold.
Another message appeared.
Unknown:
Be careful what you uncover, Lana.
Then—
The messages disappeared.
I stared at the screen.
Someone knew.
Someone was watching.
But this time...
I wasn't going to run.
I picked up my phone and called Leo.
He answered almost immediately.
"Lana?"
I took a breath.
"I think I found the evidence you need."
Silence.
Then his voice softened.
"What did you find?"
I looked at the documents one more time.
"The beginning of the truth."
