Seraphina
Morning came slowly. I opened my eyes and the first thing I saw was the faint line of sunlight slipping across the floor.
The room Kael moved me into was on the opposite side of the palace. It was quieter, far from the main corridors, far from the guards as well. The walls were light-colored, and the curtains were new. It didn't do much but at least I felt much better.
Kael sat in a chair beside the bed, the same position he held when I finally drifted off last night. He hadn't changed out of his clothes. He hadn't closed his eyes either, from the look of him.
He noticed when I shifted.
"You're awake," he said quietly.
His voice was deep from staying up all night.
I sat up slowly, pulling the robe tighter around myself. He stood up and walked to me.
"Do you want water?" he asked.
I nodded. He poured it and set the cup in my hands without letting our fingers touch. His eyes stayed on my face the whole time, studying every small change like he was counting them.
