The morning of the ball felt like my heart was shattering into pieces.
It was supposed to be my birthday, I was finally turning 21 and it should have been an exciting day for me but the overwhelming feeling of frustration that enveloped me made me want to stay in bed all day.
Birthdays were meant to be special and exciting. I wondered what my birthday would have been like had my mom been alive and if she didn't end up mentally unstable.
The maids came in as soon as the first light hit the curtains.
"Happy birthday, Your Highness," one of them said softly, as if that made anything better but I couldn't be annoyed, I knew they meant well so I managed a smile.
Another one opened my wardrobe with eagerness, humming a birthday song. I stayed on the bed, and remained staring at the ceiling.
"Please, Your Highness," one of them urged me. "We need to start now if we want you ready before noon."
