I breathed until my heartbeat slowed to something almost normal, and then I straightened. Fine. If I couldn't leave the castle and I couldn't touch him without possibly dying and I couldn't understand what he was or what he was hiding, then I had only one option left,

Survival!

If I was trapped, I was going to be useful, not a prisoner. So I walked with purpose again, chin up, steps steady. But as I moved through the halls, something strange hit me.

Quiet. The castle was too quiet.

No gossip, no wandering shifters, no staff lingering in corners. And the biggest absence hit me next…

The smug assistant, the one who hovered around Draven like a shadow, the one who insulted me and smirked and made sure I always felt unwelcome. I hadn't seen him in days.

No dramatic disappearance, no rumor. Just…gone.

Good, I thought first. But then, I felt unease.

Nothing stayed still in this castle without a reason.
