Yecheng's emphasis on the words "all their worldly possessions" made the three adventurers, especially Rex, look incredibly embarrassed. As experienced adventurers, even if they were down on their luck, their total assets were definitely more than just that bag of copper coins. They had only said that to take advantage of Yecheng and Yousuke, thinking they were country bumpkins who wouldn't know any better.
What they didn't expect was how small the world was. They had thought they would never see each other again, yet after parting ways that morning, they met again that very afternoon—and the man was the brother of the goddess he was pursuing!
"Rex, I didn't realize you had such a helpful side! But I don't want to owe you too much. Tell me how much you gave Yecheng, and I'll pay you back for him."
Rex was even more mortified by the goddess's question. He had been trying to score points with her, but if the truth came out, he would have no chance with her ever again.
"Haha… It was nothing, I just like helping people! By the way, Miss Soya, is this brother of yours really a new adventurer?"
To avoid disappointing his goddess, Rex shamelessly kept up the act. Thankfully, Yecheng simply gave a playful smirk and didn't expose him.
"He did just register as an adventurer today, but he told me he has some skills and wants to take on quests above E-rank. I'm a bit worried about him. That's why I thought maybe you guys could take him along to gain some experience."
Soya believed that while Rex's group wasn't the strongest in town, they were a decent middle-tier team. She thought they would be more than capable of taking this "rookie" Yecheng under their wing.
But when Rex and his friends heard Soya's request, they immediately looked constipated. In fact, Rex's two teammates came up with excuses on the spot and immediately fled.
"Rex, I suddenly feel a bit unwell today, so... I'll be going now."
"Me too, I just remembered my girlfriend made plans for us to go shopping today. I've been promising her for a long time, so... sorry."
Rex cursed inwardly at his companions' flimsy excuses. Before they came here, the guy who claimed to be sick had been flexing his muscles the entire way. And the other guy was even more ridiculous. They had been teammates for so long, and Rex had no idea he even had a girlfriend! Shopping with his own left and right hands, maybe?
"Miss Soya, as you can see, my two teammates have had some unexpected emergencies. It seems we can't take on a quest today. How about we find another time to show your brother the adventurous life?"
Rex perfectly understood why his two teammates ran away. If his goddess wasn't standing there, he would have bolted as well. The "new adventurer" Soya spoke of was a super big shot disguised as a rookie in their eyes!
Letting the three of them guide him on an adventurer's quest? This guy was a powerhouse who could easily beat the three of them with his bare hands. And they had even tried to take advantage of him before. Going on an adventure with him now was a surefire way to end up as a corpse in the wilderness.
"Sister Soya, I really am quite strong. If you don't believe me, how about I have a friendly spar with Mr. Rex here? If I can beat him, you can arrange some more difficult quests for me. But if I lose, I'll follow your plan and just take on quests that match my adventurer rank, okay?"
Yecheng and Soya weren't really siblings, but since Soya had introduced him as such to Rex's group, he wasn't going to let her lose face.
"Sorry, I just remembered I have something important to do today. I'll be leaving now!"
Soya hadn't even had a chance to agree to Yecheng's suggestion when Rex, upon hearing his words, immediately decided to escape.
What kind of joke was this? Sparring with Yecheng? That was no different from a pure death wish. Before, all three of them couldn't even last a minute against an unarmed Yecheng. Now he wanted to challenge him to a one-on-one fight? He'd be a "five-second man" at best!
Running away in front of his goddess might be embarrassing, but it was better than being instantly defeated in a spar, which would be even more humiliating.
"Alright, if you can beat Rex, I'll make an exception and arrange a high-level adventurer quest for you."
Rex had barely taken a step when Yecheng's hand was on his shoulder, accompanied by a grin that showed all his teeth. "Then I'll be counting on you, Mr. Rex, who is so willing to help others."
There's never a shortage of people who love a good show, especially at a place like the Adventurers' Guild, which is often filled with bored adventurers. Seeing a commotion, many adventurers brought their ale over to watch, and some even started a betting pool.
Rex, meanwhile, had a look of utter despair on his face. He and Yecheng were surrounded by onlookers. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place. If he tried to make another excuse to leave, he would become the laughingstock of the entire adventurer community. Lust truly was a bone-scraper. If he hadn't been so infatuated with Soya, he wouldn't be in this situation.
With no escape, Rex drew his sword and looked at Yecheng with a grim expression.
"No way, no way. Look at Rex's face; he looks really serious. Is he really going to get into a fight with a new adventurer who just registered today?"
"Looks like my bet is a goner. I was hoping for an upset, since Rex has been after Miss Soya for a while. I thought he'd show some mercy for her sake, but it seems Rex is a real man after all."
Yecheng had indeed just registered as an adventurer today; many of the adventurers who were in the guild earlier could attest to that. And while Rex's skill was only average, beating a completely inexperienced rookie was a sure thing. So no one in the crowd believed Yecheng could win.
However, unlike the onlookers, only Rex, as the combatant, knew that the white-haired man in front of him was no rookie at all!
