Chapter 54 - Meet Your Heroes

With the others waking up and getting together, they finally began to work on the case. ODETTA had given them a file that detailed every part of the crimes committed by the one they were hunting.

"He's a ghost."

"How do you read so fast?"

"I've gotten a lot of experience since you're passing. But that doesn't matter. I think I know who we're going to have a new part of this investigation."

ODETTA immediately chimed into the conversation as to see what was inside of BB's mind.

"Please tell us."

"They were most likely in the lineup but were let go. Because I can see the deaths of everyone here are normal and usually, when someone or something is magically defiant, they don't have that on their faces. All of them have backgrounds in law enforcement so that likely means that this person is an evil breed like mine."

Scott and Mistress were left with their jaws on the floor at the statement. BB wasn't evil in their ideals, and he had certainly put in the work to be a good man. Alas, one doesn't fight their nature.

"So, what are you saying?"

"They're an old-world creature. Something from the golden age of crime."

"Golden age of crime?"

"Yes, during the peak of the Vietnam War, there was a large amount of crime. Most would assume that it was strange, but I believe it to be a mix of the socioeconomic mood of the times."

"Okay?"

BB quickly read through the file. It had everything, psych profile, forensics, suspects, and crime scene photos. I know that someone had left an anonymous tip and that they were either an independent investigator or were close to the killer. Assuming that there was an anonymous tip, that means that the one in the lineup most likely is the one who did it. If that anonymous tip was correct about the killer, that means that in fact, they have him in the lineup.

"Who was let off on a technicality?"

ODETTA knew that BB's gears were moving inside his head and immediately went through her systems as she reviewed the files that she went through, she came up with four different people of the seven-man lineup.

"I have their names and we're going to be landing there. Around a week after the lineup. Make sure to bring in beef and gasoline when you get the chance."

Suddenly, a printer popped out of the desk, and it printed out four sheets of paper. They had pictures, addresses, and names. My guess is that they have a medium build. The blood spatter showed that they had a hard time with what can be assumed as a hacksaw. What an amateur. He's obviously practiced in a simulated environment before doing so. God knows that I certainly had my mistakes but those were intentional.

"He is a charismatic one, he listens in on conversations when he isn't alone. Though he prefers to be alone he is usually quiet in a crowd, completely unable to form his own opinions. That is common with the likes of psychopaths."

The group moved out of the ODETTA and mobilized towards the town. Sears was to pretend to be a homeless man from the likes of the Vietnam War, (partially because he was old enough for the time and his past military experience) Mistress was to run past the likes of a lawyer's office. Apparently, half those guys had the same lawyer. Which isn't that surprising when you remember that the town had a small population of around three and a half thousand.

"Okay, so what do we do?"

Scott, BB, Alexandria, and Joey were left. Joey was in good shape and had been told to get a suit like Scott's and to look like he was in the mafia in order to intimidate one of the men who was a gambling addict.

"Nice suit."

"If you tell anyone about this, I'm going to break your neck."

"Nice to see you kept your sense of humor."

Joey looked down at his hand. It was tanned like the rest of his body and developed calices. The only fingers that didn't have calices were the ones that Scott had blown off in [redacted].

"Sir, would you like to come out?"

"Who is it?"

The man they were going to be interrogating was audibly impaired, or as some would place under the term, deaf. He only knew they were there from the fact that he had a system of lights tethered to his doorbell. He was a technical engineer for a minor security firm as a way of finding footing in the industry before moving on with his career in poetry, of which, was horrible.

"We're with the... wait, which state are we in?"

"Utah."

"We're here to talk about potentially selling you a copy of the Book of Mormon."

Scott's dimples had become very obvious as his face changed into a smile. He was trying hard not to laugh. He was as catholic as the pope. One time when he was little, he was a missionary. They would go door to door. Then the incident happened. When he closed his eyes and when it was quiet enough, he could still hear their screams and the sounds of his mother furiously holding the door closed whilst two men took his family's kitchen knives and cut, oh how they cut. She was found holding the door closed even though she'd been stabbed four times in the back before eventually having her throat slit. He told the police that he thought that they were letting birds out in the apartment from how she still tried to scream despite how her throat was cut. She made a whistling noise when it happened.

"Yes, I would like to buy a copy."

He had a deep sense of religion. BB, whilst watching from behind the tree in the front yard was able to deduce that much. The man had a receding hairline and blue eyes. He was medium height and not too athletic looking. That gives him the profile perfectly. But too perfectly. So, he either set this up or he was caught off guard and needed a way out. Which can only be true if he was inside the department. An engineer for a security company doesn't get that kind of clearance. This isn't him but why should I stop Scott from having his fun?

"Well, we're actually not Mormon. We're here to talk about our lord and savior Johova."

The door slammed faster than a knife could ever move.
