We were in the car heading to the meeting with my father. Lorenzo sat beside me in the back seat, reviewing the terms Marco had prepared.
"He'll try to manipulate you." Lorenzo said without looking up. "Will use family loyalty, guilt, whatever works."
"I know my father's tactics."
"But you haven't seen him since the wedding. He's had weeks to refine his approach."
"I'll be fine."
He looked at me.
"I need you focused. He is desperate, and desperate men are dangerous."
"I know."
Marco was on the passenger seat. Two security cars were following us as usual. We were ten minutes away from the venue when our driver slumped forward. Marco grabbed the wheel from the passenger seat, trying to maintain control.
"Ambush!" Marco shouted. "Brace!"
There was gunfire. The security car ahead exploded. Lorenzo shoved me down, covering my body with his. Our car crashed into a barrier.
There were voices outside.
"Get them out! Move!"
