Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Little Neighbor

[First time completing a teaching mission, additional reward obtained]

[Obtained random Ability: Divine Chef]

[Obtained 1000 general experience points for basic abilities]

[Random skill proficiency level +1]

[Obtained 3 disciple slots]

Without hesitation, Sora put all the general experience points he had just received into his Reiatsu.

Sora looked at his own panel, which had already changed somewhat:

[Basic Abilities: Reiatsu lv10, Swordsmanship lv50, Kidō lv20, Hakuda lv10, Shunpo lv20]

[Abilities: Divine Chef]

[Disciples: None (0/3)]

His Reiatsu level had increased from 5 to 10. His empty-handed catch skill had also leveled up by 1, from Beginner to Proficient.

There were five skill levels in total: Beginner, Proficient, Mastered, Grandmaster, and Transcendent.

A flood of training memories entered Sora's mind, as if he had truly dedicated a period of time to diligent practice.

He focused his attention on the "Divine Chef" ability and immediately saw more information.

[Divine Chef: Your cooking skills have reached the Transcendent level. You can always find the best way to prepare ingredients and can even make food that glows!]

Sora's original cooking skills were only average, just enough to cook food through.

Now, with the help of the "Divine Chef" ability, perhaps he could try making some of those complicated dishes.

After the morning classes were over, he could go home. Sora immediately sprang into action, eager to test the "Divine Chef" ability and see just how effective it was.

The Katori Dojo was located in West Rukongai, District 6—Fūgai. The living conditions and public order of the Rukongai districts were reflected in their numbers; the smaller the number, the better the environment.

Fūgai was a relatively ideal area with sufficient food, good public order, and a pleasant environment. It was lush with vegetation and had many forests, so there were quite a few hunters in this region.

After returning to Fūgai, Sora went to a nearby hunter's home. He was out of meat at home and needed to buy some first.

Behind the dojo was a large forest. At the foot of the forest, a hunter lived permanently. The two families were neighbors, and Sora often came here to buy some game.

As Sora approached the wooden cabin, he heard a dog barking from inside.

He reached the front of the cabin and knocked lightly on the wooden door.

Knock, knock, knock—

A few moments later, Sora heard faint footsteps behind the door. The door opened a tiny crack.

"Little Lisa, it's me," Sora said to let the person behind the door know who it was.

Hearing Sora's voice, the person inside pulled the door open.

The one who opened the door was a black-haired girl. Her small, cute face had not yet fully matured, and she looked to be about eleven or twelve years old.

However, this seemingly harmless young girl was actually a hunter who could go into the mountains alone.

After the black-haired girl opened the door, a small Akita puppy rushed out and curiously circled Sora, occasionally sniffing at his pant leg.

"Little Lisa, is this your dog?" Sora crouched down and ruffled the Akita's head.

"I found Pochi in the mountains a while ago," Lisa said as she picked up the Akita, which was trying to bite Sora's pant leg, and held it in her arms.

"He's quite cute. When Pochi grows up, he can help you hunt. I came by to buy some meat today. Have you been hunting in the mountains recently?" Sora asked with a smile.

"I hunted a wild boar a few days ago, but I sold most of the meat to Granny E. There's a little left." Lisa put down the Akita in her arms, turned to go inside, and stood on her tiptoes to take down the cured meat hanging above the stove.

There was an izakaya near the dojo. Granny E was the owner, and she often bought game from here as well.

"This is the meat you were saving for yourself, right?" Sora scratched his head. The cured meat in Lisa's hand had clearly been marinated. It looked like she was planning to roast it over the fire to make jerky.

"I'm going up the mountain tomorrow. I only need to keep a little," Lisa bit her lip, not wanting Sora to leave empty-handed.

"You might not catch anything when you go up the mountain. You should keep this as a reserve. I'll come back after you return," Sora said, waving his hand.

The black-haired girl's full name was Yadōmaru Lisa. Although she wasn't wearing glasses yet and looked completely different from the image in Sora's memory, he remembered the name. This little neighbor had the potential to become the captain of the 8th Division. She was currently in a growth phase and had a great need for food.

Sora glanced at the cutting board and saw some meat trimmings and organs. An idea struck him. Since he was going to test the "Divine Chef" ability, he might as well try something challenging.

"Little Lisa, are these trimmings for sale?" Sora asked, pointing at the less desirable cuts on the board.

"Huh?" Lisa's mouth fell open, somewhat stunned. "That's... that's for Pochi's food!"

"Hey, what's with that look? It's not like I'm asking for something disgusting," Sora took out his money pouch, pulled out 200 kan, and handed it to Lisa. "My cooking has improved a lot recently. I want to try making a dish with these tougher cuts. Just a bit is fine."

"If you want them, just take them..." Lisa didn't accept the money in Sora's hand. "They're for Pochi anyway, and he probably can't eat this much."

Lisa couldn't connect "improved cooking" with "making a dish from organs and trimmings." She had never eaten such things, considering them scraps.

In her mind, Lisa had already labeled Sora's cooking as strange and unappetizing.

"Take it." Sora pressed the money into Lisa's hand and gave her a thumbs-up. "I'm a swordsmanship teacher at the Spiritual Arts Academy now. As a role model, how can I take things from you for free?"

The little girl lived here alone. She didn't always succeed when she went hunting, and her meals were often inconsistent. Sora was naturally unwilling to take things from her for free.

Sora took the opportunity to check Lisa's panel.

[Yadōmaru Lisa]

[Talent: S]

[Reiatsu: lv3]

[Affinity Level: Friendly]

[Status: Shocked (He wants to cook those parts?!)]

Lisa's talent was indeed very high. Sora had already listed Lisa as a disciple candidate in his mind. He would have to find a way to take her on as his disciple in the future.

"You became a teacher at the Spiritual Arts Academy?" Lisa looked Sora over with surprise. "So your swordsmanship is that good?"

"It's good enough to teach the academy students," Sora said with a smile. "If little Lisa enters the Spiritual Arts Academy in the future, you'll have to call me Professor Katori too."

Lisa was still young, and her Reiatsu had not yet reached the level required to pass the entrance exam.

Sora took the meat, which was wrapped in oil paper, and before leaving, he ruffled the Akita's head again.

The Akita's small eyes darted around, staring intently at the meat in Sora's hand.

Why did this person take its food away!
