Chapter 11 - Family Time

The sound of crackling fire and the smell of burning wood filled the Dragonslayer's hut.

Lara sat at the far left of the hut as she chopped small cubes of meat. Before her was a round, black cooking pot placed on a small campfire. Strangely, the redwood floor wasn't catching any fire.

The pot bubbled as pieces of chopped vegetables, mushrooms and herbs swam around in the brownish gravy.

She picked up a redwood spoon, mixed the gravy, and let it shimmer for a few seconds before adding the meat. She covered the pot with a redwood lid and stood up.

At that moment, the hut's door opened, and Haden walked in with Rion in his arms.

"Mama!" He exclaimed before jumping out of his father's protective embrace and strutting towards her.

A smile appeared on her face as she bent down to pick him up. But he stopped a few steps away from here, causing her lips to drop into a frown.

She felt a strange sting in her heart. Her lips parted to question. Before she could, Rion turned around and took off his vest and showed her the tattoo on his back.

Her brows climbed up as she walked closer to look at the wings imprinted on his back.

Her ocean-like blue eyes gleamed as her right hand moved forward and touched the wings... a smile appeared on her face as she spoke, "I always knew that my baby would soar high, but... now you even got wings to fly."

Rion puffed up his chest in pride and turned around to hug her as he spoke in excitement, "Mama!"

"Yes, my baby," she replied as she picked him up and patted his back with a wide, motherly smile.

"What is the meaning of these wings?" He questioned with a finger on his chin.

She shook her head and replied with a soft chuckle, "No one knows. Only time will tell the meaning of those wings... but I must say they suit your free-spirited nature quite well."

He gave her a nod and began to think, 'I wanted to stay in the tribe because of how dangerous this world is... but is it even an issue now? I am Immortal, after all.'

'System.' He spoke in his head, and a blue screen flickered before him.

'Eh? Why is it showing none...? Wait! I am stupid, I haven't even assimilated them,' he thought as he inwardly facepalmed himself.

Lara walked towards the cooking pot and removed the redwood lid. The room was soon filled with the pleasant aroma of the food.

Rion's mouth began to water. He thought, 'I can do this later.'

Lara placed him down on the floor and muttered before going back to the pot, "Go sit with your father."

Rion nodded and walked out of the hut.

He turned to his left and saw Haden sitting on a wide, flat rock covered with the fur of a black and blue wolf.

Just like always, Haden was staring in the south. He raised an eyebrow and walked near him.

"Papa." He called out.

Haden lowered his head and helped him climb up before asking, "What is it? Rion."

"Why do you always stare in that direction?" He questioned, his eyes gleaming with unhidden curiosity.

Haden's smile faltered slightly. He stayed silent for a few moments before answering, "I am just keeping up the watch."

His lips parted to question further, but before he could say anything, Haden cut him off, "We will talk of it no further."

He pressed his lips into a thin line and nodded before he sat down in Haden's lap and spoke, "I'll keep the watch with you."

A chuckle escaped from Haden's lips as he spoke, "Some part of me wishes that you do, while the most does not."

The father and son duo fell silent as they bathed in the warmth of the afternoon sun. The hides that covered them moved slightly with the wind as it filled the world with a new breath.

The hut's door creaked open as Lara stepped out with a wooden plate that had three steaming wooden bowls on it.

She walked towards them, handed the plate to Haden, and climbed onto the rock. She sat beside Haden and asked, "Why the silence?"

"We were having peace for once," Haden replied with a sigh.

A vein throbbed at her forehead as she spoke, "You shouldn't have married me then. Hmph!"

Rion chuckled at their banter and picked up a bowl, carefully placing it before him. He filled his spoon and blew into it to cool down the food before eating.

A few moments later, he placed the spoon in his mouth and his eyes widened as the flavours melted on his tongue and soothed his very soul.

He closed his eyes to focus on the flavour after he finished eating, he mumbled, "It's delicious."

"Of course it is, I caught that game in the morning, after all," Haden responded proudly.

Hearing him, Lara raised an eyebrow and spoke, "So, you are implying that it's good because you caught the game, not because I was the one to cook it?"

Haden felt a bad premonition and acted upon it, "Huh? No, that's not what I meant..."

Rion ate while giggling and thought, 'Well done, stupid Papa.'

Lara opened her lips to speak further, but suddenly, Rion's vision darkened as Haden covered his eyes with his hand.

"W-what?! What are you doing, Papa? I can't see!" He uttered in surprise.

But Haden didn't move his hand. A few moments passed, but there was no response.

"Mama?" He called out, and just like before, no reply.

Suddenly, a thought hit him right in his head, 'Don't tell me! Are they kissing?!'

"Go get a room!" He shouted at the top of his lungs.
