After Danzo's death, Ryuzen soon returned.
At the Root base, the only survivors were Yamanaka Fū, the Aburame guard, and Sai.
As for whether there were more "Sais" hidden somewhere—orphans raised from childhood to become Root tools but not yet developed into elites—Itsuki neither knew nor cared.
After cleaning up, Itsuki ordered the three survivors to apologize directly to the Hokage. With that done, he released his clone.
Originally, he had considered killing every survivor and pinning Danzo's death on Orochimaru.
But since Danzo had openly called for outsiders to handle him in front of Mito and Kushina, Itsuki had all the justification he needed to kill Danzo without hiding anything.
The moment the clone was dispelled, Itsuki received the full memory feedback.
Danzo's corpse had already been sealed inside a scroll—along with his severed arm and Shisui's Kotoamatsukami eye.
All of it was placed under Ryuzen's protection and could be retrieved with a summoning technique.
When they saw the memories, Hashirama was stunned into silence.
The Uchiha… gone? Completely erased?
Tobirama's expression darkened like a brewing storm. What had his students and their successors been doing all these years?
Mito also saw everything. She didn't particularly care about the Uchiha massacre, but when she watched Itsuki dismantle Root single-handedly, she felt a grim satisfaction.
"You're not hurt, are you?" Mito immediately pulled Itsuki's hand, inspecting him from head to toe, as though confirming he hadn't suffered backlash from sending only a clone.
"Reckless child! To invade their stronghold with just a clone—that's far too dangerous. Luckily, you're fine. If you'd been injured, when I returned to the Pure Land, I'd have ground that old man into dust!"
Mito exhaled in relief, though her voice carried both worry and scolding. "You didn't have to be so anxious. I know what you're afraid of, but as long as your great-aunt is here, no one will dare let you suffer injustice."
After all, Danzo was a long-time veteran of Konoha. Even though he'd been stripped of his position as Hokage's advisor, his contributions were significant.
The Third Hokage himself might hesitate to move against him. Not to mention, Danzo had risen this high only because of Hiruzen's indulgence.
The two had been practically inseparable in their schemes.
If Itsuki hadn't acted, Hiruzen might have simply swept things under the rug—raising the matter, then letting it quietly fade, leaving Danzo to "reflect on his mistakes" in private seclusion.
Itsuki never explained Hiruzen and Danzo's relationship, but Hashirama and Tobirama had enough experience to piece it together.
Mito turned her sharp gaze on the two Hokage brothers. "This is the successor you chose? Because of your conflicting philosophies, cliques formed, splitting the village into factions. Look at the chaos that's followed.
"Even someone like Itsuki—your own descendant, the last of the Senju bloodline—was dragged into these conspiracies before he even had a chance to grow. Think how many others have been devoured by these same shadows. Not only the Uchiha…"
Hashirama raised his hand, stopping her from continuing. For once, his expression was serious.
But with his nature, it would take him time to sort through the weight of this truth.
"I was wrong." Tobirama's voice was low, his face tense.
"I knew Monkey was too soft and Danzo too radical. Neither truly fit to be Hokage. But at the time, there was no better option. Faced with urgency, I chose Monkey.
"I thought their strengths and weaknesses would balance each other, working together to stabilize the village. Instead, they opposed one another, dragging us here.
"Yes, I've always held prejudice toward the Uchiha, but my loyalty was always to the village. When I saw potential, I cultivated it—like Uchiha Kagami, my trusted subordinate.
"But exterminating the entire clan? Unforgivable. Some might have deserved suspicion, even execution. But erasing the Uchiha altogether is an irredeemable crime."
"Alas!" Hashirama gripped his hair, sighing heavily. "How could it come to this? How will I ever face Madara in the afterlife?"
"Brother," Tobirama snapped, "Madara has nothing to do with this. He died before you. Stop clinging to him."
"But…" Hashirama faltered, unable to continue.
"Enough." Mito cut in sharply. "I showed you these things so you could judge them as Hokage, not so you could wander into old arguments."
Hashirama waved his hand weakly. "Tobirama has always handled such matters better than me. We are dead men—we shouldn't interfere too much. The living must choose the next Hokage soon and let him decide."
"I agree," Tobirama said. "Monkey is too old. It's time for him to retire. As for Danzo—his sins are grave, but they cannot be made public. Death ends his debts. Better to settle this internally."
Mito bit her tongue. For the sake of the village, she didn't argue further. But she still reminded them firmly:
"No matter what, Itsuki must be protected. As the only remaining child of the Senju, he's grown up with no family to shield him, forced to endure these injustices. If he weren't talented and cunning, he would have been eaten alive."
"Only child? What do you mean only child?" Hashirama blinked.
How could such a great clan like the Senju have dwindled to one person?
Mito sneered. "See for yourself. Where in Konoha do you feel any Senju chakra left? Even when I was alive, our numbers were already thin."
"Brother, did you forget?" Tobirama's tone was exasperated.
"You proposed it. You said you wanted to break down clan barriers, to make everyone in Konoha one family. So you disbanded the Senju, hiding our surname, scattering us into the masses. Even your own descendants stopped using the name Senju.
"After generations of intermarriage, pure-blood Senju hardly exist. Even my descendants carry Uchiha blood. Unacceptable!"
"Haha, now that you mention it, you're right." Hashirama scratched his head sheepishly.
"But what's worse," Tobirama pressed, "is that after all that, only a handful of smaller clans followed your example. The major clans kept their names and traditions. Even after I restructured the academy, little changed."
"Alas… people cling to selfish desires. We can't expect everyone to think like us. But I believe—someday—our dream will come true." Hashirama sighed.
"I beg to differ, Grandpa!" A figure rushed forward. Her eyes locked immediately onto Itsuki.
She pulled him into a fierce embrace, holding him tightly.
It was Tsunade, freshly returned after handling her duties.
She looked straight at Hashirama, her voice firm.
"Self-sacrifice and tolerance are unreliable. Assimilation doesn't mean surrendering yourself—it means making others bend.
Instead of scattering our strength and being swallowed by the masses, the most powerful bloodline should be the one to assimilate everyone else!
That's why I restored Itsuki's surname—Senju. From now on, I want him to marry across every clan, building the most powerful bloodline in the shinobi world. Through that family, we'll stabilize both the village and the entire world."
Tsunade's declaration shocked everyone present—including Itsuki, Nawaki, Jiraiya, and the others who had just caught up.
