Chapter 5 - WISPERS OF BETRAYAL

Michael's heart pounded in his chest as he frantically tried to revive the lifeless girl. Her skin was ice-cold to the touch, her breath nowhere to be found. Panic and guilt consumed him, overwhelming his senses. He had never intended for things to go this far, but a predator's hunger had taken hold, leaving destruction in its wake.

With trembling hands, he pulled the covers over her Lifeless body, tears streaming down his face. He knew what he had to do, but the thought of it filled him with dread.

In a daze, Michael crept out of the house, carefully locking the door behind him. He stumbled down the street, his mind reeling with the weight of his actions.

As he walked, a chill ran down his spine, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. Glancing over his shoulder, he saw nothing but empty streets. Yet the sensation persisted, as if the girl's spirit was pursuing him, condemning him for his heinous crime.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Michael arrived at his own home. He let himself in, locking the door and leaning against it to catch his breath. His body shook with silent sobs, his mind racing with the horrors he had unleashed.

He knew he couldn't stay here, not with the evidence of his sin so close at hand. Gathering his belongings in a duffle bag, Michael slipped out the back entrance, determined to flee the city and start anew. He couldn't bear the thought of facing the repercussions of his actions, not when his own conscience was already wracked with guilt.

As he disappeared into the late night fog, Michael couldn't help but wonder if he would ever be able to escape the darkness he had unleashed. The weight of his crime pressed down upon him, a constant reminder of the devastating consequences of his desires.

The next day, Kingsley returned home from his unexpected trip, expecting to find his sister waiting for him. Instead, he was met with an eerie silence. Pushing open the front door, his heart skipped a beat as he took in the scene before him.

There, on the bedroom, lay his sister's lifeless body, her clothes strewn about in disarray. Kingsley's world shattered as he rushed to her side, shaking her gently, calling her name. But she remained still, her eyes frozen in a vacant stare.

Tears streaming down his face, Kingsley cradled his sister's body, begging her to come back, to breathe again. But it was too late. The damage had been done, and nothing could restore what he had lost.

As the authorities arrived to take charge of the scene, Kingsley's mind reeled with the questions that plagued him. Who could have done this to his innocent sister? And why had he been so oblivious to her fate while he was away?

The news of Kingsley's sister spread like wildfire through the small community and the campus. Chidi heard it from a mutual friend, a cold shock hitting him. He immediately thought of Michael. He pulled out his phone, his fingers trembling, and dialed Michael's number. It rang once, twice, then went straight to voicemail. He tried again. Same thing. Michael's phone was off. A strange feeling settled in Chidi's stomach.

He couldn't just sit there. Kingsley needed him. Chidi rushed over to Kingsley's house, which was now surrounded by police tape and marked cars. He pushed past the caution tape, his heart heavy, and found Kingsley sitting in his room, staring blankly ahead. His eyes were red and swollen, his face pale and etched with unspeakable pain.

"Kingsley," Chidi whispered, sitting beside him and putting a hand on his shoulder. "I'm so, so sorry."

Kingsley finally looked at him, his gaze distant. "Chidi. My sister gone… she's gone." His voice cracked, and fresh tears welled in his eyes.

They sat in silence for a long moment, the heavy atmosphere thick with grief. Then, Kingsley spoke again, his voice barely audible. "have you seen Michael today? I'd think he'd be here with you. He's my best friend."

Chidi frowned. "I tried calling him, but his phone's off. I haven't seen him since… since yesterday, I guess." He didn't mention the strange feeling he had about Michael's silence. He didn't want to add to Kingsley's pain.

Meanwhile, the police investigation was moving fast. Detectives were talking to neighbors, asking if anyone had seen anything unusual. One elderly woman, Mrs. Kaleb, who lived in the same compound, spoke up. "Yes, officer. I saw one young boy, Kingsley's friend. He was there all through the night. I saw him leave just before dawn when I came out to eas myself."

Another neighbor, Mr. Henderson, also confirmed seeing Michael at Kingsley's house late at night.

The police heard this and looked at each other. Michael had been the last person seen with the victim. This was important.

A detective approached Kingsley. "Your neighbors said your friend, Michael, was here last night. Can you confirm that?"

Kingsley, still in a daze, nodded. "He was supposed to be. He called me and told me when he came."

"Do you know where he lives?" the detective asked.

Kingsley gave them Michael's address. "It's not far from here."

"We need you to come with us," the detective said gently.

Kingsley and Chidi followed the police to Michael's apartment building. The officers knocked loudly on Michael's door, but there was no answer. They tried the handle, and it was unlocked. Cautiously, they pushed the door open. The apartment was scattered, and non of his clothes are there.

A cold dread spread through Kingsley. Chidi felt it too. It was clear Michael hadn't just left. He had fled.

"He's gone," a detective said, his voice grim.

"This confirms our suspicion," another officer stated, pulling out his radio. "This is Unit 7. We have a confirmed suspect on the run. Michael Davies. Green light for all units. Block all major roads leading out of the city. We need to find him now."

The chilling reality settled over Kingsley. It wasn't just a stranger. It was Michael. His best friend. The man he had trusted. His mind struggled to grasp the betrayal, the horror that Michael could have done such a thing to his sister. The world spun, and Kingsley felt a darkness deeper than any grief he had known before.
