Sleep shattered the instant I heard those words. I bolted upright, my heart hammering against my ribs like a caged bird.

"Are you certain? Lorena in a car accident? That's impossible."

My voice came out steadier than I felt, but the phone trembled in my grip like a leaf in a storm.

"Please hurry to Benevolent Hospital," the nurse's voice cut through my denial.

I sucked in a sharp breath, jamming my feet into shoes without looking, my thoughts spinning into chaos as I flew down the stairs.

"Mrs. Zaid, what's happened?" Kellan's concern followed me.

"Benevolent Hospital. My friend was in an accident." The words scraped my throat raw.

Kellan moved swiftly, arranging the car and sending Christina along without question.

This has to be wrong. Hospitals mix up patients all the time. Lorena is fine. She has to be fine.

During the ride, I dialed Lorena's number repeatedly, each ring echoing like a death knell. Her phone stayed silent, unreachable.
