Emma's Pov
The moment I saw the tall, broad shadow break away from the flow of pedestrians and move toward me with purpose, my chest unclenched.
"Emma?" a deep voice called.
Damian's bodyguard. I'd seen him only once before, standing silently outside the courtroom like a wall carved out of stone. His name was Cole, if I remember right. Tonight, he looked even more formidable, dressed in dark clothes that didn't draw attention but commanded it if you knew what to look for.
"Yes," I breathed. "That's me."
Cole nodded once, quick and assessing. "Stay behind me."
I didn't question him. Not when the air behind us seemed to pulse with the same wrongness that had followed me all the way down the street.
He moved with the precision of someone trained to handle danger without hesitation. One second he was standing in front of me, the next he was striding toward the row of parked cars, the same place where I'd seen that flicker of movement.
