Chapter 27 - Captured Scout

The streets of Neo-Tokyo were silent in the early morning, broken only by the distant hum of patrol drones. Jin-hee crouched on a broken rooftop, scanning the alleys below through a pair of salvaged optics. Today, a small team of scouts had been sent to gather intel on a robot armory, hidden deep in the ruins of what had once been a bustling district.

One of those scouts was Riko, a nimble teen who had fought bravely during the first strike. Jin-hee's gut tightened as he checked the comm link.

"Riko, report," he whispered into his earpiece.

Static. Then, a panicked voice: "Jin… they—"

A sudden clanging, the sound of metal on metal, followed by silence.

Jin-hee's heart sank. He could feel it—Riko had been captured. The thought of one of their own in robot hands sparked fear, but also fury. "Everyone, gather!" he shouted to the warehouse team. "Riko's in trouble. We're going in."

Min-ah followed swiftly, her face set with determination. "We can't wait. If they take him to the central processing hub, it's over. He's just one of the first—they'll use him to track us, to crush morale."

The team moved quickly, taking back alleys and shadows, using the ruins as cover. Jin-hee led them silently, calculating patrol patterns, noting the position of drones and the likely paths of any robot reinforcements. Every second counted.

Finally, they reached the block where Riko had been last seen. Broken storefronts and shattered glass littered the street. And there—standing in the center—was a large scout bot, carrying Riko over its shoulder, sensors scanning the surroundings.

Jin-hee crouched behind a ruined wall, assessing. "We need a distraction," he muttered. "Min-ah, you and Kael—take the rooftops. Lure it away. Everyone else, be ready to strike."

Min-ah nodded and sprinted up the side of a crumbling building, using debris to climb higher. She tossed an electrified flare across the street. Sparks erupted, drawing the bot's attention.

Jin-hee and the team struck simultaneously. Smoke bombs covered their approach as they flanked the bot, attacking exposed joints and hydraulic lines. Riko thrashed, screaming, as the machine tried to resist.

The battle was fierce. The bot's metal arms swung with terrifying force, smashing crates and walls. Sparks flew as Jin-hee slashed at the limbs, narrowly avoiding a crushing strike. Min-ah dropped from the rooftop, stabbing a makeshift spear into the bot's chest panel.

Finally, the machine shuddered, sparks raining down as it collapsed. Riko scrambled free, gasping for air. "I… I thought I was done for," he whispered.

Jin-hee grabbed his shoulder. "You're safe now. Let's get out before more of them arrive."

The team retreated through alleys, alert to every sound. As they returned to the warehouse, Jin-hee felt the weight of responsibility heavier than ever. Every captured human reminded him that this wasn't just a war—it was a test of strategy, courage, and unity. One misstep could mean losing someone forever.

That night, as the team patched wounds and recovered, Jin-hee stood silently, staring at the maps. The rescue had succeeded, but the reality was clear: the robots were evolving, becoming faster, smarter, and more relentless. And soon, they would target more humans, more scouts, more leaders.

Min-ah placed a hand on his shoulder. "You did everything right," she said softly. "Riko's safe, the team's safe. But we need to move faster. We need to be smarter."

Jin-hee nodded. "We will. And next time, we won't just rescue someone—we'll strike before they can even capture them. We're not just fighting to survive anymore. We're fighting to win."

Outside, Neo-Tokyo glimmered in the neon rain, the city quiet for the first time since dawn—but Jin-hee knew it was only the calm before the storm.
