Chapter 156: Grandma Liu
Walking out of the crevice, what appeared before Kenji's eyes was a massive space.
A traditional courtyard house stood before him, surrounded by rows of fruit trees.
Besides that, many Poison-type Pokémon lived within.
Kenji scanned the area and was surprised to find that these Poison-type Pokémon had considerable potential. Most were D and C-Rank, with a few reaching B and even A-Rank.
"Gas~ Gas..."
Gastly called out and looked toward the courtyard house, seeming to signal Kenji to enter. Then, ignoring him, it floated off to play with its Pokémon friends.
This courtyard house must be where Elite Four Liu lived.
Looking up, this space was entirely enclosed by rock walls, with the only exit being the one he had just entered through.
Above, purple poisonous clouds gathered, making it difficult to see the space below clearly from above, like a thick, overcast sky.
This gave the entire space a gloomy atmosphere.
Retracting his gaze, Kenji walked toward the main gate of the courtyard house. Just as he was about to knock, he heard a click, and the gate opened by itself from the inside.
Kenji paused and walked in, but there was no person or Pokémon behind the gate.
The gate had opened on its own.
But this wooden gate certainly didn't look like some high-tech automated door.
Kenji walked in cautiously, Beedrill also scanning the surroundings vigilantly.
"Creak, creak..."
As soon as Kenji entered the courtyard, he saw a short old woman in a purple robe lying on a rocking chair in the middle of the yard.
The rocking chair swayed gently, making creaking sounds.
The old woman had a head full of silver hair, and her face was covered in deep wrinkles. She looked very, very old.
Elite Four Liu!
Kenji held his breath. Seeing this 150-year-old Poison-type Elite Four member in person, he couldn't help but feel nervous.
This was an elder separated from him by two whole centuries.
Liu Yanju slowly opened her eyes, and the rocking chair stopped swaying.
"Little guy, you're here?"
Liu Yanju's pupils slid sideways to look at Kenji.
"Junior Kenji, pays respects to Elite Four Liu."
Kenji greeted her respectfully.
"Oh my, what Elite Four? This old woman hasn't been an Elite Four member for a long time." Liu Yanju smiled, waving her hand. Although she looked ancient, her spirit was surprisingly lively.
Her speech was crisp and clear, her articulation precise, not at all like a 150-year-old elder.
Liu Yanju slowly sat up from the rocking chair, grabbed a cane leaning against the wooden table next to her, and slowly stood up.
It was a crooked cane, topped with a red-and-white Pokéball that didn't seem to be just a decoration.
"Take off that hazmat suit. There's no poison gas here." Liu Yanju glanced at the suit Kenji was wearing and chuckled.
Hearing this, Kenji nodded and took off the hazmat suit.
Sure enough, the air in this space was surprisingly fresh, completely devoid of the foul smell of poison gas.
"Come on, let's talk inside." Liu Yanju tightened her robe as she spoke.
Kenji stuffed the hazmat suit back into his backpack, recalled Beedrill and Arbok into their Pokéballs, and followed Liu Yanju into the house.
"Don't call me Elite Four Liu. Call me Grandma Liu."
"Grandma Liu."
Walking into the room, the first thing Kenji saw was a square, somewhat aged table.
But when Kenji saw what was on the table, he was dumbfounded.
Besides a teapot, there was a box of steaming hot fried chicken.
Fried chicken??!
It felt like seeing a bowl of takeout rice with modern packaging in a historical drama—full of incongruity and unreality.
Grandma Liu grabbed a piece of fried chicken from the box, took a bite, and gestured to Kenji. "Stop staring. You must be hungry after walking all this way. Try some, it's still hot."
"No thanks, I just ate." Kenji waved his hand to decline. He wasn't lying; the mushroom hotpot he had for lunch was still digesting in his stomach.
Grandma Liu didn't insist. While gnawing on the fried chicken, she poured a cup of tea for herself and Kenji.
The tea was a pale green color, and a fresh aroma wafted up, instantly filling the room.
"Come, come, try Grandma's special tea." Grandma Liu beckoned to Kenji.
Kenji sat opposite Grandma Liu, picked up the cup, blew on the steam, and took a sip.
As the tea went down his throat, a unique fragrance instantly filled Kenji's mouth, making his eyes light up.
"How is it?" Grandma Liu asked with a smile.
Kenji nodded sincerely. "It's delicious. It's the best tea I've ever had!"
Grandma Liu looked proud. "Of course. Grandma added venom from over a dozen different Pokémon to it. The flavor is absolutely top-notch."
As soon as Grandma Liu finished speaking, Kenji's hand shook, and he almost spat out the tea in his mouth.
"Don't be scared, don't be scared. Any of these venoms alone would definitely send you to the grave, but after Grandma's concoction, not only will it not harm your body, but drinking it long-term is actually very beneficial."
After saying that, Grandma Liu picked up her teacup and gulped down two mouthfuls, seemingly unaffected by the heat.
...
"Grandma Liu, Gym Leader Tang said you know a method to let Arbok control its pattern changes," Kenji asked cautiously.
Liu Yanju shook her head, then nodded. "About a hundred years ago, I read in an ancient text about a tribe that regarded Arbok as their guardian deity. Their tribe possessed a secret technique that allowed Arbok to change its patterns. However, this secret technique had extremely high requirements for the Arbok's talent.
"Later, because no Arbok in the tribe could master this secret technique, the tribe declined and disappeared."
Liu Yanju blinked. "Coincidentally, Grandma has done some research on Arbok. I spent forty years and finally figured out some tricks."
