Chapter 67 - Chapter 67: The Water Field

Chapter 67: The Water Field

Aqua Jet, as its name implied, used the power of water to launch the user like a cannonball. The speed was incredible.

In the blink of an eye, it had already reached Medicham, its hands erupting with pink, Fairy-type energy.

It was Play Rough, a Fairy-type move. It attacks in a seemingly playful way and even has a chance to lower the opponent's Attack stat.

A Fairy-type move against the Fighting/Psychic-type Medicham... this was a 2x super-effective hit. And that was before factoring in Azumarill's Huge Power.

But faced with Azumarill's ferocious attack, Medicham merely raised its hand, which was already crackling with electricity.

Thunder Punch!!!

"KRA-BOOM!!!—"

Azumarill's "playful" attack ran straight into Medicham's fist, which was surging with lightning.

"RIII!!!—"

The moment the Fairy energy and lightning collided, the Play Rough was torn apart as if it were rotten wood. The electric snakes on Medicham's fist brutally ripped a hole through it, completely scattering the Fairy energy.

The Thunder Punch's power didn't diminish. After shattering Play Rough, it continued straight into Azumarill.

Azumarill cried out in pain. A 2x super-effective Thunder Punch against a Water-type, plus Medicham's Pure Power, which doubled the damage...

"BANG!!—"

Azumarill collapsed, its eyes turning into swirls.

A one-hit KO!! Another one-hit KO!

Beside Kenji, Goro's expression was one of shock. Kenji, however, wasn't surprised by this outcome at all.

It might have only looked like a five-level gap between 39 and 44.

But in reality, it was the chasm between a Professional-level and an Elite-level Pokémon.

Azumarill was defeated, and the trainer sent out a Starmie.

But the Starmie's level was also not over 40.

Clearly, this trainer didn't yet have the ability to control an Elite-level Pokémon.

Pokémon aren't tools. While Pokéballs can force a low-level Pokémon to obey, as a Pokémon's level gets higher, the ball's control weakens. More and more, it comes down to the trainer's own ability to earn their Pokémon's respect.

A Starmie that hadn't reached the Elite-level was naturally no match for Medicham. A single Thunder Punch defeated it with ease.

All three Pokémon were one-shot.

Zayne's opponent obviously had no desire to stick around. As the referee announced the result, he quickly left the arena.

Zayne had only revealed his Medicham, which Kenji found to be a bit of a pity.

"Know yourself and know your enemy," after all. It was always good to get more intel.

That Medicham was strong, but not absurdly so. If it went up against Yuki's Absol, the winner wouldn't be so clear. Even though Fighting is super-effective against Dark, Absol's move pool was also incredibly deep.

He had to admit, none of the trainers at Metropolis Academy were slouches. The battles were fantastic. Kenji also spotted several other students who possessed Elite-level Pokémon.

This place was truly full of crouching tigers and hidden dragons.

"Kenji, it's your turn," Goro suddenly nudged Kenji's arm, pointing at the match-up screen below, his voice excited.

Kenji looked, and sure enough, his name was on the list. And it was the Water Field!

This was a pleasant surprise. His Gyarados was a Water-type, after all. The advantage was his.

His opponent's name was Luke Liu.

Kenji patted Goro's shoulder. "Keep an eye out for me. I'm up."

With that, he turned and left the waiting area.

Seven or eight minutes later, the match on the field ended. Kenji strode out and walked toward the center arena.

He stood on the trainer's box for the water field. Soon, a young man stood on the opposite box.

He looked like an amiable guy, with a smile that felt humble and easygoing.

Luke Liu looked at Kenji and nodded, a silent greeting.

Kenji smiled and nodded back in return.

As the referee began to read the rules, both trainers took a Pokéball from their belts.

"Battle... begin!!"

The referee's green flag dropped, and both trainers threw their Pokémon.

"Go! Gyarados!!"

"Go!! Cloyster!!"

Cloyster

Level: LV.38

Ability: Skill Link (If a multi-hit move is used, it will always hit five times.)

Potential: B-

Kenji's brow furrowed slightly. Staring at the double-shelled Cloyster, he felt a headache coming on.

Cloyster, an Ice/Water-type.

The typing wasn't the main issue.

The problem was that this thing was hard! Its Physical Defense was a terrifying 180!

The Pokédex claimed that not even a bomb could breach its shell.

Luke Liu saw that Kenji had sent out Gyarados and didn't hesitate. "Cloyster! Use Iron Defense!!!"

"Gyarados! Dragon Breath!!"

Kenji wasn't about to stand by idly. The moment Luke ordered Iron Defense, Kenji commanded Gyarados to use Dragon Breath.

Just as Cloyster's shell closed and began to glow with a metallic luster, Gyarados's mouth began to gather Dragon-type energy.

Cloyster's total base stats were only 525.

With such an absurdly high Physical Defense, its other stats were extremely weak.

Your Physical Defense is high, is it? Fine, I'll just hit your Special side.

Gyarados's Special Attack wasn't high, but that was only relative to its 170 Physical Attack. In reality, 80 Special Attack wasn't weak at all.

"Cloyster! Use Protect!!"

Luke hurriedly commanded.

But it was too late. Before Cloyster could even finish its Iron Defense animation, the Dragon Breath had already slammed into it.

"BOOM!!!—"

The closed-shelled Cloyster was blasted back a good distance, almost getting knocked right into the water.

"Damn it! Cloyster! Use Icicle Spear!" Luke shouted.
