Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: I Can Take Revenge

Lu Shiyan pulled her into his embrace. "What's wrong, An'an? What are you talking about?"

Su Ning'an pointed towards the foot of the bed. "Th...there's someone there!"

My heart leaped with joy. Could she see me? Does this mean I can finally take revenge?

Even if I couldn't do much, I could at least scare her.

I quickly ran through scenes from horror movies I'd seen, the ways vengeful spirits made their entrance. After all, I was new at this, having just died.

As Lu Shiyan glanced in my direction, I suddenly surged towards him, stretching out my tongue. Was this scary enough?

Yet his expression remained calm. He didn't see me.

"There's no one there. You must be seeing things."

Su Ning'an cautiously raised her head from his chest. I grinned widely, wanting to terrify her.

Su Ning'an's expression eased. "I must have been mistaken. Brother, I'm so scared. Can you stay with me tonight?"

"Nonsense! I'm your brother-in-law. What would people think if I stayed in your room?"

Lu Shiyan comforted her for a few more moments before preparing to leave. His initial anger had dissipated into a strange calm. I watched, filled with disappointment.

So, Su Ning'an couldn't see me after all. She must have just imagined it earlier.

As he left, my parents were still apologizing to him, saying it was all my fault, begging him not to take it to heart, assuring him I'd return once I'd calmed down.

Outside, a torrential downpour was falling. I stood in the garden, listening to those harsh words.

My mother used to love me dearly. How had such intense maternal love turned into this?

I tilted my head back, facing the pouring rain, letting the drops fall across my face.

I had tears now, too.

Lu Shiyan had been through the wringer all day, his emotions fluctuating like a rollercoaster.

He hadn't slept properly for many days and looked utterly exhausted.

The driver asked quietly, "Mr. Lu, where are we heading?"

After a moment's thought, he said, "Back to the Lu family home." Before leaving, he dialed his assistant. "Investigate Su Wan and... Lu Yanchen."

Hearing this, I laughed bitterly. We were childhood sweethearts, depended on each other for years. To think that all those years of feelings could be shattered by a few words from Su Ning'an. He actually suspected me of having an affair with his uncle!

When he arrived at the Lu family estate in the heavy rain, Lu Yanchen and the Old Master were playing chess in the tea room.

Such a harmonious scene would have been unthinkable before. Lu Yanchen harbored deep hatred for the Old Master. His return this time clearly wasn't just about business; even his mindset had shifted.

Lu Shiyan felt a profound sense of threat. With his grandfather present, he couldn't speak directly. He simply greeted, "Grandfather, Uncle."

The Old Master glanced at him, his eyes full of disdain. "Look at you. You look nothing like the CEO of the Lu Corporation." His once crisp suit was stained with mud, his hair and clothes damp. He did look wretched.

Lu Yanchen's gaze swept over him indifferently. His slender fingers placed a black piece on the board as he remarked lightly, "He really doesn't look much like a CEO."

He didn't bother being polite, openly expressing his hostility towards Lu Shiyan.

Wanting to ask his questions but hindered by the Old Master's presence, Lu Shiyan had to go to his room to clean up first.

When he returned to the tea room, the Old Master had already retired for the night. Lu Yanchen remained seated before the chessboard, motionless, as if waiting for him.

"Uncle, there's something I want to ask you."

Though Lu Shiyan had many questions, he unconsciously seemed to shrink in Lu Yanchen's presence.

Lu Yanchen turned his wheelchair, his narrow eyes appraising Lu Shiyan.

Not just Lu Shiyan; even I, dead as I was, felt a natural fear of him.

His pupils were rather small. When he lowered his gaze, his eyelids covered a third of them, making him appear exceptionally cold and aloof. His thin lips were pressed tightly together, his face commanding respect without any need for anger.

"Speak." That single word carried immense authority. Even though I'd lost all physical sensation, I couldn't help but shiver.

"I want to know why you were at the hospital when Su Wan had her miscarriage. That was the gynecology ward. Someone also saw you with Su Wan before our wedding." Lu Yanchen spun the smooth black chess piece in his hand, a scornful smirk curling his lips. "Are you suggesting I have some improper relationship with your wife?"

Lu Shiyan had been indirect, but Lu Yanchen laid the issue bare, making Lu Shiyan even more uncomfortable.

"So, you suspect the wife you grew up with, who knew you, accepted you, and loved you for years?" "Uncle, that's not what I meant, I just..."

Lu Yanchen gave him no room to explain, his voice cold and firm. "Then let me ask you a few questions. Where were you when your wife miscarried? Why did she miscarry? You were at the hospital every day. Why couldn't you spare her a single glance? Instead, you're here questioning me. On what grounds?"

This series of questions shamed Lu Shiyan. Knowing he was in the wrong, he didn't answer directly but instead went on the offensive. "Uncle, changing the subject? Does that mean you're guilty? You and Su Wan met in private before, didn't you?"

His clumsy tactics were transparent, not just to Lu Yanchen, but even to me.

"Yes, I met her several years ago." Lu Yanchen admitted directly.

Lu Shiyan's face showed the glee of someone thinking they've caught someone, looking utterly convinced.

Before his joy could settle, Lu Yanchen spoke again. "Do you want to know when we met?"

From Lu Shiyan's expression, I could tell his mind was going to a dirty place.

Lu Yanchen took a sip of tea, the steam misting his handsome face. He spoke slowly, deliberately. "The year you were abroad during that earthquake. A foolish woman had her passport hidden. She had to resort to illegal means to cross the ocean, just to get to the earthquake zone as fast as possible. And then, guess what happened?"
