Chapter 10 - The Silence Behind the smile.

Scene: Style, Suits & Slight Distraction

Morning – School Corridor

The cultural festival had taken over the campus. Banners flew, beats echoed, and the scent of food from stalls filled the air.

Then came the entry.

Zayan Shah strolled down the hallway in a perfectly tailored navy three-piece suit, paired with a black dress shirt and no tie — confident, clean, and lowkey dangerous.

From the opposite side, Ahmed arrived with all his usual drama — rocking a maroon velvet three-piece, gold buttons shining, and sunglasses indoors like a true Bollywood backup dancer.

Ahmed (shouting across the hallway):

"ZAYAN, MY MAN!"

Zayan turned, already smiling.

Zayan:

"You look like you're here to crash a wedding."

Ahmed (grinning):

"Wrong.

I am the wedding.

Sara's gonna faint when she sees me."

Zayan raised a brow.

Zayan:

"She might — if she comes."

Ahmed paused, adjusting his cuffs.

Ahmed (concerned):

"Wait, what do you mean?

Bro, it's cultural festival day. She has to be here."

Zayan shrugged coolly, but there was a flicker in his eyes.

Ahmed (flexing):

"You know what?

Doesn't matter.

When she sees this suit — the charm, the confidence — she'll fall for me in 0.2 seconds. Right?"

Zayan chuckled.

Zayan:

"If confidence could kill, half the school would be dead by now."

They both laughed, but Zayan's eyes wandered…

Just beyond Ahmed, across the courtyard — he saw Zara walking in, dressed in maroon and gold. Graceful. Quiet. Unreadable.

His smile faded for half a second.

Ahmed (noticing):

"Yo — where's Wail? Haven't seen Chocolate Hero yet."

Zayan (still watching Zara):

"Don't know.

We'll talk later, buddy."

Ahmed (calling after him):

"Hey! Just tell me one thing! Is Sara coming or not?!

Don't let my suit go to waste, bro!"

Zayan just raised a hand mid-walk, not turning back

 Scene: Coming Home

Later that day...

Ali was finally discharged from the hospital.

Wail and Sara brought him back home, both glowing with happiness — the kind that only comes after weeks of fear, waiting, and prayers.

Wail unlocked the apartment door and pushed it open with a little dramatic flair.

Wail (grinning):

"Welcome home, bro.

These walls, these windows… even the door's been waiting for their prince to return."

Ali stepped inside slowly, his eyes wide, heart full.

The familiar scent. The soft lighting. It felt like a dream.

He turned and pulled Wail into a tight hug.

Ali (choked up):

"Thank you… for everything, Wail.

I'm lucky to have you in my life."

Wail (grinning):

"Of course you are.

But don't insult me."

Ali paused, confused.

Wail:

"You forgot to say… 'thank you' out loud."

Ali (laughing):

"You're impossible."

He hugged him again.

Ali:

"You haven't changed one bit."

Wail (mock dramatic):

"You know what it feels like?

Like I'm hugging my wife."

Ali (shocked):

"What the—?!"

He immediately pushed Wail away, who fell back onto the sofa, laughing uncontrollably.

Ali (fake annoyed):

"You're ridiculous, Wail Shah."

Both burst into laughter — real, from the gut, the kind they hadn't shared in a long time.

From a distance, Sara watched them quietly, a soft smile on her face.

Sara (in her heart):

After such a long time…

Wail and Ali are finally laughing again.

From the bottom of their hearts.

Ali noticed her and opened his arms.

Ali:

"Hey! Sara! Why are you just standing there?"

She walked up and he hugged his little sister tightly.

Ali (teasing):

"Did this idiot give you a hard time?"

Sara glanced at Wail and smiled.

Sara:

"Nope.

He took care of me.

He protected me.

He fulfilled his promise."

Wail (stretching dramatically):

"Bro, I'm starving.

Let's make something good."

Ali:

"Well, alright. I'll make pasta for everyone."

Wail (grinning):

"Wrong answer.

Go rest in your room.

Mr. Chef is handling the kitchen tonight."

Ali (mocking):

"Do you even know how to turn on the stove, Mr. Chef?"

Wail (pointing at Sara):

"She'll help."

Sara (smiling):

"He's right. Go rest, Ali. We've got this."

Ali raised his hands in surrender and walked to his room with a smile.

As he disappeared down the hallway, Sara turned to Wail and gently said:

Sara:

"Don't worry…

I'll make sure everything's fine."

 Scene: A Silent Apology

In the Kitchen

The kitchen was warm with soft light and the smell of fresh ingredients.

Sara moved confidently, setting vegetables on the counter, sleeves slightly rolled, hair tied back. Wail stood beside her, unusually quiet — knife in hand, but his thoughts far away.

Wali : Sara I will cut the vegetables for you.

Sara : ok, then I will marinate the chicken.

Wali : Sara?

Sara : hmm….

Wali : I'm sorry.

Sara turns back to wali. She was shocked because it's the first time that wali says apologize to anyone.

Wali: don't look at me like this

Wali : I know my apologies don't work but trust me I didn't do that for any purpose I don't want to hurt you.

Wali paused for a moment

Wali : I know I did wrong.

I don't lie to you that I love you. I'm scared you already broken because of your brother condition infact you try to kill yourself. That's why when you confess in front of me I just say yes to you.

Sara : Wow, first play with someone's emotions and then say sorry . Nice wali shah. Very well done.

Wali: so, what should I do? Do I say no to you? Did you accept that time? A girl's who already tried to take sleeping pills.who already broken from inside. Does she accept that?

Sara : How shamefully you defend yourself ?

Wali with cold smile

Wali : shamefully? What about you? Who already knew that I already love someone but still proposed to me. You knew that I do your care because first you are my childhood friend as well as my buddy's beloved sister . I don't have any emotions for you but still you confess in front of me.

Wali take long breath

Wali changes his expansion he holds sara hands gently he stop his tears in his eyes , his voice is cracking

Wali: ok let's finish everything, I confess that I lied to you about my feelings, I hurt you.

But

His voice is cracking

But.., believe me I don't do anything on any purpose.

Sara

Tears are falling down from her eyes.

Sara wiped her tears , Her voice trembled, but she didn't step back.

Sara: Okay let's finish it because I am done. I'm done wali begging for love. I can't bear it anymore.

Because it's hurting me, and can't allow myself to suffer more.

The kitchen went silent.

Wail didn't move. Didn't speak. Just… stood there, broken in his own silence.

Suddenly—

A voice cut through the air.

Ali (stepping in):

"Hey!

What are you guys

talking about?"

Both Sara and Wail turned sharply — like they'd just seen a ghost

Their faces were pale.

Their secrets… exposed.

And Ali? Standing there, eyes bouncing between them, completely unaware of the emotional storm he'd just walked into.

Sara and Wail are still frozen in place, staring at Ali like they've seen a ghost.

Ali looks back at them, confused — but their silence speaks louder than words.

Ali (raising an eyebrow):

"What happened? Why do you both look like I caught you red-handed?"

Wait why it looks like you both are crying .

Sara glances at Wail.

Wali holds an onion in his hand .

Wali ( dramatic) : because of this, bro that onion gives us a very hard time. Right sara

Sara forced herself to simile

Sara : He is right .

Ali : Oh really, that's expensive. I thought there is no one who dares to cry to wali shah.

Wali: Well ,you are wrong, there is someone who already does that.

Ali with tease full voice

Ali: oh,my bad, how can I forget zeelight.

Wali: shut up

Sara cut them

Sara : ok, boys I don't think so ,you guys need my help. So bye bye and inform me when you guys are done with cooking .

Ali:

"Wait—what? Where are you going?!"

Sara (playfully):

"Bye-bye, boys."

Ali turns to wali

Ali: What happened to her?

Wali : She is just tired.

Ali: Hmm, she is tired . But now his brother is here for her.

Wali smiles : ok mr.brother cooked for her.

Ali: Okay.

Wail (to himself, exhaling quietly):

"Thank God he didn't hear anything...–

Scene _ School Hall – Culture Festival

The entire school hall is bursting with energy.

Students are cheering, music echoes through the speakers, and performers are taking the stage one by one.

But Zayan… he's in another world.

Zayan (to himself, eyes fixed on Zara):

How can someone look so beautiful…

She hasn't changed at all.

Her eyes — still deep like the ocean.

The shine in her hair, the softness in her hands… it's all the same.

Even the glow on her face — like a thousand bright stars.

Everything's still there…

Except one thing.

Her memory. Her memory of me.

He stands in silence, lost — watching Zara laugh with Zoya near the corner of the stage.

Ahmed (walking up, holding a paper cup):

"Zayan! Bro, did you call Wail? Where is he? And what about Sara? We've got performances lined up—"

Zayan doesn't respond. His eyes still locked on Zara.

Ahmed (snapping fingers):

"Hello? Earth to Zayan?"

(No response.)

Ahmed (dramatic pause):

"Okay… you asked for this."

He casually throws the entire cup of water right at Zayan's face.

Splash!

Zayan (jumps back, wiping his face):

"WHAT THE HELL—Are you dumb? What did you just do?!"

Ahmed (grinning):

"Oh, thank God! You're alive. I thought you slipped into a Coma.

Zayan (deadpan):

"Are YOU in your senses?"

Ahmed:

"Nope. But clearly, neither are you. You were staring at Zara like she was a galaxy."

Zayan looks away, pretending to be annoyed, but his ears turn a little red.

Ahmed smirks knowingly.

Scene -Unexpected Pair

The school hall continues to buzz with excitement when suddenly a voice calls out:

Teacher:

"Zara, Zayan, Zoya, Ahmed — come here!"

The group walks over to the side of the stage where the teacher stands, clipboard in hand.

Teacher (looking around):

"Okay guys, you're next. Get prepared for your performance."

Then she pauses.

Teacher (frowning):

"Wait — where are Wail and Sara?"

Zoya (hesitating):

"Ma'am… they haven't arrived yet."

Zayan:

"They probably aren't coming."

Teacher (disappointed):

"What? How can someone be this irresponsible on performance day?"

Zoya (nervously):

"Ma'am… should we pair Zara with Zayan instead?"

Zayan and Zara both freeze.

Zara (shocked):

"Wait — what?"

Zayan (almost stuttering):

"Yes, how can I dance with her— I mean—"

Teacher (cutting them off):

"Why not? You both are great dancers. I had originally chosen Zara and Wail to represent our class, but in Wail's absence… Zayan, you'll take your brother's place."

Zayan:

"But Ma'am—"

Teacher (firm):

"I don't want to argue. Please try to understand the responsibility you carry. This is about teamwork and representing your class well. Just do it."

Zayan & Zara (reluctantly):

"…Okay, Ma'am."

Teacher (smiling and walking off):

"Well done."

As soon as the teacher leaves, Zara turns to Zoya, fuming.

Zara:

"Can't you keep your mouth zipped for one minute?!"

She storms off, irritated.

Zoya follows her.

Zoya (calling after her):

"Wait — girl, listen to me!"

Meanwhile, Ahmed looks at Zayan, trying to hold back a grin.

Ahmed:

"So… are you happy now, Mr. Prince Charming?"

Zayan (flat):

"Go to hell."

Ahmed (mock hurt):

"Why does everyone leave me alone?"

Scene -Mirror Talk

Zara steps into the empty restroom, her heart pounding harder than the music blasting from the school hall.

She locks the door. Leans against the sink.

Pulls out her phone — and opens an old, dusty app.

She whispers softly:

Zara:

"Al… you there?"

A pause. Then she types.

Zara to Al:

 Are you there?

 I'm stuck again.

How do I dance with Zayan…

When my soul's still tied to a storm I never understood?

The screen lights up.

Al : I'm here.

And I know… this isn't just a dance.

It's a battlefield in disguise.

Zara blinks fast — holding the tear that wants to fall.

Zara to Al: I don't hate him.

But I don't know who I am around him anymore.

Not after London.

Not after forgetting… what I shouldn't do?

Al: Maybe you forgot the details.

But your heart didn't.

Neither did his.

That's why his eyes still shake when they look at you.

Zara closes her eyes. The reflection in do the mirror looks tired. Soft. Bruised, but not broken.

Zara (softly):

"Why does it always come back to him?"

Al': Because no matter how far you run…

The stars always find their way back to the night sky.

You can't outrun your own light, Zara

Her thumb hovers over the screen… then taps:

Zara to Al : thank you, You always know what to say.

She slips her phone away.

Fixes her expression.

And walks out of that room — this time with fire in her eyes.

 Scene -The Stage Is Ours

Zayan stands near the side curtains, bouncing one leg nervously. His hands are cold. His mind louder than the crowd outside.

He turns to Zoya, voice low:

Zayan:

"Do you really think she'll come?"

Zoya (shrugs):

"Maybe… or maybe not."

Before he can respond, a voice cuts through the silence—

Zoya:

"Girl!"

Zayan looks up.

Zara is walking toward them — head high, back straight, but eyes trembling with hidden fear.

Zara (calmly):

"I'm ready."

Zoya's eyes sparkle. She gently squeezes Zara's shoulder, then looks at Zayan.

Zoya:

"That's the spirit.

Now go and nail it."

Just then, the teacher's voice echoes through the microphone:

Teacher (excited):

"Okay everyone! Get ready to be amazed!

Please welcome… Zayan Shah and Zara Jahangir for our next performance!"

The school hall shifts. Gasps rise from every corner.

Student 1 (whispering):

"Wait… what? Zayan and Zara?!"

Student 2:

"Where's Wail?"

Student 3:

"They replaced Wail with Zayan? Are you kidding me?!"

Zara freezes for a second at the side of the stage. Her breathing quickens.

Zayan notices.

He leans close and gently whispers — only for her.

Zayan (softly):

"Forget the crowd. Forget the noise.

Just look at me. Only me."

She meets his gaze.

There's warmth. Pain. A storm.

The music begins.

The spotlight hits the stage.

And as they step forward…

Zara places her trembling hand in his.

Their dance begins.

Their eyes meet under the spotlight.

No touch. No words. Just movement.

Yet somehow — their shadows dance as one.

Perfectly in sync. Not a single step missed.

Their hearts? Racing.

Zara (to herself):

> "Why does this feel so familiar?

Like I've already lived this moment…

Like I've danced in his arms before —

Even if I've forgotten the rhythm."

Across from her, Zayan's eyes are locked on her —

Unblinking. Soft. Steady.

A small smile plays on his lips, like he's seeing a memory come back to life.

Zara (mind whisper):

> "It's like something slipped from my mind…

But stayed alive in my heart."

They keep dancing — feet gliding, eyes speaking.

 In the crowd…

A boy nudges Ahmed.

Boy 1 (grinning):

"Bro… the Shah brothers must know some kind of magic."

Ahmed (blinking):

"Huh? What?"

Boy 2 (pointing at stage):

"Look at Zayan. How's he so chill dancing with her?"

Boy 1:

"Don't forget — he's Wail's twin.

And Wail's known as the King of Flirty."

Both boys snicker.

Ahmed raises his phone.

Ahmed:

"Perfect. I'm recording this. Gonna send it to Wail."

Boy 2:

"Wait— what?! You're dead."

Aliza (stern glare):

"Zip your mouths. You guys are ruining the moment."

 Back on stage…

They're still dancing. Still smiling.

Every turn. Every spin.

Every heartbeat matching a beat of the music.

It's not just a performance —

It's a memory, unfolding without explanation.

The music fades.

The crowd erupts.

Cheers. Whistles. Applause.

But on stage —

Two hearts are still beating like drums.

Teacher (clapping):

"Well done! You both absolutely nailed it!"

Zara smiles — really smiles — as she steps back.

For the first time in a long while… she looks free.

Zayan stands still for a second, eyes still on her.

Zayan (to himself):

> "Maybe you forgot me…

But I never stopped carrying you inside me."

 Scene -After the Applause

Zara steps off the stage, her breath still uneven.

The crowd is still roaring — but behind the curtains, the moment feels quiet.

Zoya rushes to her first, eyes glowing.

Zoya:

"Girl, you just nailed it!"

Aliza joins in, grinning ear to ear.

Aliza:

"Yes, Zara! You two were on fire! Like literal fire."

Zara smiles softly, a little shy.

Before she can say anything — Zayan walks over, eyebrows raised with a crooked grin.

Zayan (pretending to be offended):

"Only she nailed it?"

Zoya smirks.

Zoya:

"Oh come on, boy —

You just proved you are Wail Shah's twin!"

Zayan's smile fades a little.

Zayan (serious):

"Don't compare me to him.

We're… different."

A beat. Everyone goes quiet for a second.

Aliza (trying to lighten it):

"Okay fine, you're different —

But the way both of you create chemistry on stage… that's definitely a Shah thing."

Zoya (nudges Zara):

"She's right."

Zara (changing topic quickly):

"Okay, okay — stop it.

I'm starving. Let's eat something before I faint."

Zayan chuckles.

Zayan:

"Good. Because today's treat is on me."

Aliza:

"Are you sure? I'm ordering extra fries!"

Zayan:

"Order the whole menu. I just danced for my life."

They all laugh as they walk out together —

But as they leave, Zara glances over her shoulder toward the stage…

Like a part of her still lives in that spotlight.

Scene- Not This Time, Zara

Wail and Ali are setting the dining table together.

Ali:

"Sara, come out. Food is ready!"

Sara from her room

Sara: I am so tired, I'm going to sleep .

Ali: Okay as per your wish.

Ali (to Wail):

"Bro, I forgot the jug of water in the kitchen. Let me grab it."

Wail:

"Okay."

Suddenly a message pops up on wali's phone

Wali: Ahmed, what's that he share now.

Wail's eyes widen in shock —

It's the video of Zayan and Zara dancing together on stage.

Ali walks in, holding the jug.

Ali:

"Here's the jug. What happened? You okay, Wail

?"

Wail quickly shifts his expression, forcing a soft smile.

Wail:

"Yeah, nothing. Just a message from dad.

Come on, let's eat."

Ali:

"Yeah, let's."

They both l sit and enjoy the food together.

But Wail's mind isn't on the meal. His thoughts are stuck —

Looping that video in his head.

Wail (to himself, coldly):

> "Not this time, Zara.

I think you forgot what I did last time...

But it's okay.

This time —

you won't ever forget.

You'll remember it till your last breath."
