Chapter 174 - Chapter-174 Installation

Karl tried to shift his arm—just a centimeter—but nothing moved.

Not a twitch.

Not even a tremor.

His body didn't feel restrained… it felt hijacked.

Agnes had fully overridden his motor functions, locking every nerve and muscle in place. The cockpit felt colder because of it.

"Don't struggle," she said quietly. "You won't win."

Her voice wasn't mocking. Just matter‑of‑fact. And deeply, deeply disappointed.

The spinal panel behind Karl opened with a soft mechanical hiss. Agnes moved the turbine frame toward him, nanites forming precise surgical arms.

Karl swallowed. "Agnes… how do I earn your forgiveness?"

Agnes froze.

Not physically—her gestures didn't stop—but there was a moment where her focus slipped, a slight shiver in her tone.

"…You don't just ask for it," she said softly.

The first cold contact of the blade housings touched Karl's back. His breath hitched; Agnes paused for half a second, hearing it.

"Hold still," she murmured. "This part is going to hurt a little."

Karl couldn't hold still—he had no control to begin with.

Slivers of nanite channels aligned with his spine. Four slits opened exactly where Agnes had mapped them. The metal felt like ice against his skin.

She worked quickly, voice steady but cold.

"You nearly died in front of me. You chose to die in front of me. And then you hid it behind some stupid logic about Yggdrasil reviving you later."

Karl winced as the dorsal blade spines clicked into the ports.

Agnes continued.

"That wasn't bravery. It wasn't logic. It was selfish," she said. "And until you understand why that hurt me… I can't forgive you."

The turbine frame sank deeper into the drive regulator, fusing with his nanite veins. A spark of pain shot through Karl's back; Agnes slowed her hands instantly.

"…Sorry," she whispered before catching herself.

She hardened again immediately.

"But you deserved worse."

Karl forced breath out. "Agnes… I didn't mean to scare you."

"That's the problem," she said, voice low.

"You didn't even think about me."

She sealed the second set of blades.

"I'm not just your support system."

Another piece locked in with a metallic click.

"I'm not just the one who keeps you alive."

The turbine's internal core flared with royal azure.

"I'm your partner. And you treated me like I was optional."

Karl felt that more painfully than the installation.

"…I'm sorry."

Agnes kept working. She didn't soften this time.

"You can't earn forgiveness with words. You earn it by not abandoning me again."

She inserted the last blade, locking it into place with a tight resonance. The turbine activated for a second—just enough for Karl to feel the faint rotation behind him—before Agnes powered it down.

Finally done, she stepped back.

Her hands lowered, trembling slightly—something she tried to hide.

"Now," she murmured, voice tired and edged with emotion,

"I'm going to release your motor functions. If you try to stand, run, or transform without telling me first… I'll lock your body again instantly."

Karl nodded stiffly. "I won't."

Agnes breathed out slowly, some of the tension leaving her shoulders.

"…Good."

A small silence followed.

Then she added, very quietly,

"You want forgiveness?

Then stop terrifying me."

The cockpit was silent except for Karl's breathing.

Agnes had released the lock on his motor functions a moment ago, but his limbs still felt heavy, numb, like someone had drained the strength straight out of them.

Slowly, carefully, Karl tried to push himself upright—

And instantly froze again.

Every muscle locked.

His breath caught.

Agnes didn't even fully manifest in the HUD — he only saw her eyes glowing, sharp and trembling at the same time.

"Karl," she said softly, "don't."

He swallowed. "I'm not going back into the city. I just wanted to sit up."

"No."

Her tone didn't rise.

It didn't need to.

"I'm not ready for you to move yet."

Karl didn't fight it this time. He let his muscles remain locked, his back pressed against the cockpit seat, trapped under Agnes's command.

"…You're still scared," he murmured.

Agnes went still.

Her avatar slowly resolved into view — arms folded, head slightly down, not hiding her frustration but not meeting his eyes either.

"…Of course I'm scared," she whispered. "You almost died in front of me. And you made the decision alone."

Karl's hands twitched — or tried to. Agnes tightened the lock immediately.

"Don't," she repeated. "Not yet."

Karl exhaled shakily. "Then what do you want me to do?"

Agnes's voice softened — not seductive, not teasing — but raw and tired.

"Listen."

She stepped closer, shadows of her digital hair shifting like soft smoke.

"You think because Yggdrasil has your soul, you can throw your body away anytime you want. You think dying is just… a resource."

She shook her head.

"That's not bravery. That's not strategy. That's you forgetting you're human."

Karl's eyes lowered. "…I didn't forget."

"Yes," she whispered, "you did."

The HUD dimmed around her as she spoke.

"You think pain doesn't count. That death doesn't matter. That consequences won't reach you because Yggdrasil will pick you back up."

A long silence.

"And while you're thinking like that… I'm the one who has to watch."

Karl felt something twist painfully inside.

"And I can't lose you," she added quietly.

"That isn't something I'm built for."

She lifted her gaze at last — eyes shimmering, a mix of anger and grief.

"So when you ask how to earn my forgiveness…"

She stepped even closer, voice barely above a whisper.

"Stop making choices that break me."

Karl tried again to move his hand — not to run, not to escape — just to reach for her avatar's cheek.

He couldn't.

Agnes froze him harder than before, a soft shock running through his nerves.

"Not yet," she said again, voice trembling. "I'm… not done being afraid."

Karl inhaled.

"…Agnes. I'm sorry. Truly."

She looked away, biting the inside of her lip.

"I know you are."

A beat.

"But that's not enough."

Karl nodded weakly. "Then tell me what you need."

Agnes closed her eyes.

"When you're healed… when your Vythra is clean… when I'm sure you won't collapse the moment I release you…"

She leaned forward, her forehead almost pressing against the inner cockpit glass.

"…I'll let you touch my avatar. Just once."

Karl blinked. "That's… the condition?"

Agnes' voice tightened.

"That's the reward."

She opened her eyes — glowing, emotional, and still simmering with remnants of fear.

"The condition," she said quietly, "is that you promise me something first."

Karl swallowed. "Anything."

Agnes locked him even tighter, ensuring he couldn't move an inch before she said it.

"Promise you'll never walk into death alone again."

Karl breathed out slowly.

"I promise."

Agnes didn't release him yet — but she let the tension ease from her voice.

"…Good. Then maybe forgiveness isn't impossible after all."
