Chapter 57 - Argument

Navigating the dark, damp service tunnels beneath the palace, Hegemon and Lily moved with quiet, frantic speed. The ghost pain of decapitation still throbbed at the base of Hegemon's skull, but he forced his mind to focus on the immediate objective. Reaching the iron grate overlooking the eastern courtyard, he saw Kenji surrounded by a wave of mechanical guards, his Holy Sword flashing in brilliant golden arcs as he shattered puppet after puppet.

"Kenji! Down here!" Hegemon shouted through the grate, throwing it open. "Fall back through the utility line!"

Kenji didn't hesitate. Hearing Hegemon's voice, the Hero unleashed a radial burst of holy mana to clear a path, leaped down into the narrow stone shaft, and landed beside them.

"What in the world is going on?!" Kenji panted, wiping grease and dust from his face as the heavy iron grate slammed shut above them. "The King was a fake a literal machine and the entire royal guard opened fire on me!"

"Save the questions for later," Hegemon rasped, leaning heavily against the damp stone wall as he caught his breath. "The whole city is a trap. We need to reach the southern gates before they seal the perimeter."

Guided by Hegemon's memory of the palace layout, the trio scrambled through the labyrinthine sewer network, exiting near the lower residential district. But as they emerged into the freezing night air, the heavy iron portcullises of the outer walls slammed shut with a deafening crash. Frost-bound magical barriers erupted along the entire city boundary, sealing the kingdom completely.

From the rooftops, dozens of silent, puppet-like guards stood watching, their eyes glowing with an eerie, artificial blue light.

"We're locked in," Lily observed quietly, her silver eyes scanning the pulsing barrier. "The mana field anchoring this dome is drawing power directly from the royal citadel's core."

Kenji gritted his teeth, resting his hand on the hilt of his blade. "King Karui must be an impostor... or maybe he was a cult member all along! The whole nation is just a trap built to ambush us!"

"No," Hegemon interjected sharply, his dark eyes analyzing the seamless integration of the city's infrastructure with the puppet network. "Building a kingdom-wide construct network takes decades of intimate arcana access and sovereign authority. A cult infiltration wouldn't be able to replace every single citizen without triggering an external war."

Hegemon adjusted his cloak, his voice dropping into a cold, logical tone. "King Karui wasn't replaced by an enemy he was controlled. The real monarch is likely still alive somewhere deep beneath the citadel, his soul being used as an anchor to power this vast, hollow puppet network. Someone powerful is manipulating him from behind the scenes, using his kingdom as a massive, living puppet theater."

Kenji looked at Hegemon, his initial anger settling into a grim realization. "So if we find the real Karui and break the mind-binding spell... the whole puppet network collapses."

"Precisely," Hegemon replied, gazing back toward the towering spire of the royal citadel. "We don't need to fight an entire city of constructs. We just need to find the puppeteer."
