Chapter 14: Vulnerable Moment
The rooftop was a battlefield of rain and ruin, the Iron Monger's groan echoing through the storm, its stolen arc reactor flickering like a dying heart, its massive hand momentarily frozen over Adam. Adam's Stamina was zero, his HUD a chaos of red errors, the Untouchable System's hum silent—leaving him cold, exposed, and utterly vulnerable. His hazel eyes fluttered, rain soaking his hair, the metallic tang of blood sharp from a bitten lip. Tony's Mark III hovered above, repulsors blazing, a gold-and-red beacon cutting through the haze, the lingering scent of ozone and burnt steel sharp in the air.
"Why this silence? The system's gone, the quantum cage is open, and I'm just a kid in the rain, about to be crushed. I don't want to die here."
"Why Tony? He's fighting my war, the war my appearance caused, and I'm breaking down like faulty hardware. He doesn't know the truth."
[SYSTEM: STATUS INTERFACE] Host: Adam Reed ("The Pusher") Primary Skill: Push (Locked to Defensive Intent) Unlocked Skills: Phasewalk Lv. 1, Mirror Push Lv. 1, Intent Sensor Lv. 1 Stamina: 0% (CRITICAL) Guilt: 75% (Accumulating from extreme action) Fatal Push Events: 3 Thematic Anchor: Isolation/Moral Burden Note: Phase-Coma Active. Host mortality is high.
Adam's body was a lead weight, slumped against the steel beam, rain's chill seeping deep into his bones. He tried to twitch his fingers, a futile attempt to summon power that wasn't there. The Monger's hand began to descend again, a steel guillotine, Stane's roar a muffled, guttural curse through the suit's speakers.
"I'm touchable. And it's going to kill me. Not a hero's death. Just a splat."
[SYSTEM: FATAL OVERUSE DETECTED. SYSTEM SEIZURE. SAFETY PROTOCOL: POWER RESET INITIATED.]
[WARNING: FIELD COLLAPSE IMMINENT. HOST IS NOW TOUCHABLE. DURATION: 60 SECONDS. GUILT: +10%. GUILT: 85%.]
The word touchable flashed in his mind, worse than any physical blow. His shield was gone, the isolation replaced by raw, painful vulnerability. His heart hammered an irregular rhythm, vision blurring, the rain's sting a cruel reminder of his absolute fragility. He laughed—a small, broken sound swallowed by the storm.
"Touchable? Now? I'm dead, and the system's laughing at me on the way out. It hates me. I knew it."
Tony saw the Monger's hand descend. He saw Adam slump and go completely still, the flickering quantum static around him vanishing. The kid's out of juice. He's going to be paste. His HUD screamed collision warnings, but they were secondary to the panic that seized his chest.
"Why him? He's out of power, and I let him fight my enemy. I brought him here. I failed him."
"That's enough, Obie!" Tony roared, the suit's speakers shaking with the force of his voice. He dove, repulsors firing a focused warning blast, the heat searing the Monger's shoulder armor, the suit's joints hissing as he landed. He tore off the helmet, ignoring the sting of the rain, his breath sharp with fear. Sprinting the few feet to Adam, his hands gripped the boy's shoulders, warm and firm, dragging him behind a pillar. This was the first human touch Adam had experienced since the system's curse began.
The touch was a shock to Adam's system, not pain, but overwhelming warmth. It cut through the phase-coma's ice, grounding him like an anchor in the storm. Tony's grip was steady, his hands calloused from years of building, his breath sharp with scotch and genuine, undeniable fear.
"Why touch? I'm untouchable, but he's holding me together. He's solid. He's real. This feels… wrong."
Adam mumbled, his voice a dying ember, forcing a sliver of his usual sarcasm. "Pay up, Stark… for the save… titanium refund."
Tony's laugh was rough, a mix of relief and terror, before the helmet snapped back on. "You got it, Push-Pop. Stay put—don't die on my floor. I don't pay clean-up fees." He paused, and his voice dropped. "I've got this, kid."
"Why his trust? I'm a glitch, a walking time bomb, but he's betting his life on me staying alive. Because he doesn't want to be alone. I understand that."
The Monger staggered, its damaged systems failing, but Stane's rage burned, fueling his movements. He aimed a repulsor, sluggish but deadly, his voice a snarl.
"You're done, Stark! Both of you! You should have kept the kid in the cage!"
Tony launched skyward, rage cold and precise, the Mark III's systems straining, his HUD flashing overload warnings. This ends now, Obie. You don't steal my heart, and you don't touch my kid. He engaged the arc reactor's overload, a desperate, final gambit. The suit's hum surged to a scream. He fired a full-power repulsor blast at the Monger's stolen reactor, a sapphire-blue arc flash erupting, blinding the entire storm-swept rooftop. The Monger groaned, a dying beast, collapsing off the roof into the bay, the massive splash swallowed by the rain's roar.
"I won, but I lost family. And the victory feels like a hollow, smoking crater. That's the cost of letting a good thing go bad."
Tony landed, suit smoking, arc reactor burning bright, rain washing away the betrayal's sting, his breath heavy with exhaustion and grief.
Adam watched, eyes barely open, the Monger's fall a distant blur. Relief flooded his chest, tempered by the heavy, familiar weight of guilt.
"Tony's safe. The Monger is gone. It's over. But I'm still breaking. My victory only resulted in a system failure."
[SYSTEM: REBOOT INITIATED. CORE SYSTEMS ONLINE. STAMINA: 10% (MINIMAL RECHARGE). FATIGUE: +10%. FATIGUE: 60%.]
[NEW PROTOCOL ACTIVATED: EMPATHY PROTOCOL. WARNING: NON-LETHAL PUSHES ARE NOW MANDATORY FOR STAMINA RECHARGE. FATAL PUSH EVENTS WILL RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC GUILT ACCUMULATION. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.]
The HUD flickered back, ozone's sharp scent returning with the hum, now a cold, clinical lifeline. The Empathy Protocol flashed, a cold command: be a hero, not a killer, or suffer the consequences.
"Non-lethal? The system's chaining me, forcing me to be good. It's not a hero's choice, it's a programming constraint. But I'll take it. I'll try."
Happy Hogan jogged to Adam, his rain-soaked suit heavy, the Monger's fall a relief, but Adam's collapse a worry. "Kid, you okay? That was insane."
Adam nodded weakly, his jaw clenched, eyes haunted but resolute. "He's not asking for details. Just checking. I'm a stranger, but they're family now. I'm in the circle."
As helicopter blades roared, cutting through the storm. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s black vehicles descended, their lights harsh against the smoldering rooftop. Phil Coulson stepped out, suit pristine despite the rain, his calm a stark contrast to the chaos, a coffee cup in hand, its faint burnt-sugar scent wafting over the scene.
"Mr. Stark," Coulson said, his voice even, his eyes immediately locking on Adam. "We're here to clean up."
His gaze probed, a predator sizing up prey. Adam's paranoia spiked, the system's hum a faint warning. "Why Coulson? He's sniffing, and I'm exposed. They saw something they couldn't explain. I need a story, and it needs to be flawless."
Adam took a deep, shaky breath, the rain a somber note on the steel. His heart heavy with Guilt and newly regained vulnerability, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s shadow loomed—a new threat that made his old isolation seem preferable. "I'm touchable for 60 seconds. I can't let them know the truth. Not now, not ever."
