Chapter 6 - Chapter 5:" Deepening the Foundation"

Zen woke before the sun, like always.

His body moved on instinct now—stretch, breathe, run. There was no hesitation, no sluggish resistance. He slipped out of the inn quietly and headed toward the forest, mist clinging low to the ground as birds greeted the dawn.

The trails were familiar now. Roots, bends, shallow slopes—his feet adjusted without thought.

Eventually, he reached the clearing.

The place where it had all begun.

Zen crouched by the stream and splashed cold water onto his face. When he looked up, his reflection stared back—white hair plastered to his forehead, sharp jawline, blue eyes clearer than he ever remembered them being.

He tilted his head slightly.

"…If I'm being honest," he muttered, a crooked smile tugging at his lips, "this body's unfairly handsome."

The smile lingered—then softened.

It wasn't vanity. Not really.

Gratitude settled quietly in his chest.

I don't know what gave me this second chance, he thought, but I'm not wasting it. No drifting. No waiting.

Back at the inn, Zen ate like someone who actually needed fuel. Roasted meat, eggs, bread—simple, filling.

Later, he made his way to the town library. The receptionist recognized him by now and greeted him with a nod.

"Back again?"

"Yeah," Zen replied. "Trying not to stay ignorant."

He settled by the window, sunlight spilling across the table as he opened a thick tome.

Elements and Power Hierarchies.

Light and dark were listed first—rare, powerful, dangerous.

Light belonged to saints, holy knights, those bound to divine contracts.

Dark…

Shadow, listed beneath it, had almost no recorded users.

Zen leaned back slowly.

"So either I'm rare," he murmured, "or everyone before me failed."

He flipped to the ranking system.

F, E, D, C, B, A, S.

By every measurable standard, he was barely above F.

Zen closed the book.

"That's fine," he said quietly.

The system chimed.

"Sub-Quest issued: Learn martial arts and close-combat disciplines."

Zen blinked. "Martial arts?

He exhaled. "Guess fists still matter."

At the training grounds, Zen started with what he knew. Sword practice—clean movements, no rushing. Then shadow control—slow extensions, holding form longer than before.

His body shook by the end of it.

Only then did he sit cross-legged, breathing deeply, feeling the mana circulate. It responded more easily now. Still limited—but present.

"System," he asked, "how do I actually learn martial arts?"

A pause.

The bald figure stood before him—calm, unmoving.

It was clearly a projection. Not flesh. Not alive.

But detailed enough that Zen straightened without realizing it.

He glanced around the training hall.

Mercenaries laughed nearby. A pair of adventurers argued over form. No one even looked in this direction.

Zen waved a hand slowly.

No reaction.

"…Good," he muttered under his breath, releasing the tension in his shoulders. "That would've been awkward."

The figure moved.

No flourish. No wasted motion. Just a step forward—precise, balanced. Then another. Its feet traced a clean path across the floor, each placement exact.

Zen followed instinctively.

Step.

Shift.

Turn.

The hall faded from his awareness. His focus narrowed to spacing and weight. Where his heel landed. How his toes angled. How his body stayed centered instead of leaning.

Minutes passed. Maybe more.

Then the projection vanished.

The floor was normal again.

No glow.

No lines.

No signs anything had been there.

Zen looked down.

Faint footprints remained.

His.

Pressed lightly into the dust. Not random. Not messy. A pattern—measured, deliberate.

He adjusted his stance without thinking.

Perfect balance.

A slow breath left him.

"So that's how it feels…"

As other people moved through the hall, the marks blurred and disappeared. But Zen didn't look worried.

He had already memorized them.

He turned away, posture different now—subtle, but unmistakable.
