Chapter 22 - Chapter 21

Tears blinded me. "I can't just watch!" I cried, my voice breaking under the weight of fear and desperation. "I'm sorry, Sudesh..."

I decided to go out and surrender to him. I couldn't let anyone die because of me. My hands trembled as I gripped the cold, rough metal of the door handle. It bit into my skin. I stepped out from the car, my barefeet crunching softly against the gravel.

"No, no Amrita!" Sudesh tried to stop me, his voice strained, his chest heaving with pain. My heart thudded painfully, each beat loud in my ears. I shouted at Vaishank, my voice cracking, "You want me, right? I'll come with you. You can kill me too, but let him go!" My voice shook, filled with both defiance and fear.

Vaishank looked at me - his eyes dark with fury. For a second, the world seemed to freeze. Then, with a sharp inhale, he let go of Sudesh. Sudesh collapsed, coughing harshly, blood staining the collar of his shirt. I could hear his ragged breathing, each gasp sharp and desperate.

"Get on the car," Vaishank said in a low, dangerous voice. I looked at Sudesh, bent over, clutching his chest as if to hold himself together. My legs felt heavy, numb, but I kept walking. There was no more use fighting back. If this was my fate... let it be.

Just then - paak - a sudden sound cut through the air. I turned sharply to see Sudesh sitting on Vaishank's back, wrapping a rope tightly around his neck. The rope dug into his skin like a predator's grip.

"Get on the car, Amrita," Sudesh said, his eyes filled with pure rage, burning like molten fire. I froze for a second, unsure what to do. His voice had an edge of desperation I had never heard before.

"Now," Sudesh ordered, his voice low and sharp. Vaishank thrashed violently, his boots scraping against the gravel, but Sudesh held him in control with inhuman strength. My heartbeat thundered in my ears as I climbed into the car. Sudesh released Vaishank and grabbed the wheel instantly.

But Vaishank wasn't finished - the stubborn devil hurled a jagged rock. Crack! - the glass of my window shattered. Shards scattered like diamonds in the dim light, slicing through the air. I flinched, my breath hitching.

As we drove away, the world blurred. The sky above was dark, painted in bruised hues of deep navy, but I didn't know if it was night or just the closing of the day. Somewhere far away, cicadas screamed in the silence. The faint smell of burning rubber clung to the air.

"We should go to a police station," Sudesh said, his voice strained. I nodded weakly, trembling, my body soaked with sweat. I prayed silently for an escape - just a moment to breathe, a moment to rest.

Then - without warning - a bottle glass flew toward me like a missile.

"Amrita!" Sudesh screamed. His voice cracked with fear. He lunged forward, his arm wrapping around my chest to shield me. The bottle smashed against him with a sickening thud. I saw a burst of red as the glass cut his forehead. His body slumped, and my eyes widened in horror.

"Sudesh?" I shook his shoulder frantically, my voice cracking under panic. Cold dread crawled up my spine. "Sudesh!" I screamed again, but his eyelids stayed closed, his breath uneven.

Suddenly, the car door on my side slammed open. Vaishank's hand gripped my wrist like iron, dragging me forcefully out.

"Sudesh!" I shouted again, turning to see my friend slumped against the car, unmoving. My heart twisted painfully. Vaishank hoisted me over his shoulder. My body was numb; I didn't resist. I just looked at Sudesh and prayed nothing had happened to him.

The ground beneath me was cold and rough when Vaishank shoved me down. The place was shrouded in darkness - quiet except for the sound of my ragged breathing. The air smelled of rust and wet stone. Before I could move, he pulled me up again and pinned both my wrists hard against a damp wall. The cold bit into my skin.

"Do you think you really can escape from me?" His voice was low, almost a growl. His words made my chest tighten. Tears streamed down my face, leaving wet streaks.

"Let's get divorced, and I won't disturb you and you don't disturb me," I said shakily, my voice barely steady. A cruel smirk spread across his face.

"No, baby, not after all this happened. My plan is to finish you off... But damn, now it looks like I have to kill your whole family." His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper, each word sharp and cold. "But now, I'm not here for that. I'm here for forgiveness, and I chased you all night for that."

I froze. His words clawed at my mind. I swallowed hard, still trapped in his grip. "What do you mean?" I asked, my voice trembling. He nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving mine.

"Yes, I know I'm too bad, but will you forgive me?"

I blinked rapidly, my voice breaking as I shouted, "Don't try to fool me. I know the reason you married me is to take revenge."

His eyebrows knitted together in confusion. "What?"

"Yes," I continued, my voice trembling, "Sona aunty is not your real mother. She is your stepmother. You and your dad threatened her. Your real mom's name is Sonia."

He smiled, his breath warm and heavy against my face. "Interesting. What revenge do I want to take, Amrita?" His voice was soft, but it made my skin crawl. He leaned closer. I shouted, my voice trembling with rage, "My dad used to fight with your mom for Ravi uncle's sweet shop. My dad revealed her true face - that she took money by killing poor people's happiness. Even when the debt was paid, proving no pay, she would snatch the shop and the family's happiness if they couldn't pay."

His eyes darkened, burning with something I couldn't read. "The day everyone protested and gave death threats to your mom... she worried too much about her reputation and image. She committed suicide. She wasn't just a property owner but a famous model." I shouted, He sighed, leaning his lips toward my neck. My eyes shut tightly.

"Leave me," I whispered, trying to pull away, but his grip tightened painfully.

"And the day before my dad died, you reminded him of the past, as your father's brother Ritesh was also involved, right?" He pulled back and smiled, but there was something dangerous in his smile. "Really?" I glared at him.

"The reason my dad died was also because of you. You asked him to take his life if he didn't want to harm me," I screamed, tears burning my cheeks, my chest aching.

"And I kept the promise to take care of you, right?" he said softly. "Honestly, I was about to revenge you, but since the day I spent with you, it wasn't fake. The love, the care, the affection - all were real, Amrita." His eyes glistened with tears. My lips parted.

"And you killed our son," I said, my heart shattering into pieces. His tears fell freely.

"I didn't mean to kill our son," he whispered, his lips trembling. "The first name he called was dada, not mama." I said shakingly, My heart broke completely, pain clawing through me. He sighed, leaning his face on my shoulder.

"I... I know," he swallowed hard. "I still love you as I loved my son." He brushed his lips against my sweat.

"Then wh-what about Lora?" I asked, my mind stuttering, unable to process what was happening. He let out a deep sigh.

"She... she just obsessed over me. She didn't want to listen." He pressed a kiss on my collarbone. Tears rolled down my face. Still pinned against the wall

"We women, after marriage, won't let any man touch us, but why is it so easy for other women to touch someone's husband?" My heart pounded. My lips trembled. He didn't reply - he just pressed his lips to mine, softly, painfully.

Everything went dark.

"Arghh!" a female scream pierced the air.

The next day —

I walked back to my condominium, my footsteps slowing as I saw a crowd gathered in front of my house. Smoke curled lazily into the sky, and black marks stained the walls. My eyes widened. "My husband was there… what happened?" I screamed, panic threading my voice. Two men stepped forward and blocked me.

"He died because of a fire accident," one said softly.

I sank to my knees. "What?" My voice cracked. A few middle-aged women rushed forward, placing warm hands on my shoulders. One pressed a handkerchief scented with jasmine against my cheek. Tears rolled down my face, mixing with sweat. I was grateful for their kindness, but deep inside, I wondered how I would ever confess that I was the one who killed my husband.

My phone buzzed in my hand. A message from Sudesh: I'm fine, don't worry about me. I let out a small, shaky smile through my tears. My body trembled as I held back sobs — I didn't want anyone to know the truth. I was the one who stabbed him with the car window glass, dragged him home, and set the fire that ended him.

A quiet sigh escaped my lips. The scent of smoke still lingered in the air, sharp against the scent of my perfume.

How sweet — a super loving husband who could still betray his wife, and a super soft girl who would quietly destroy the pain he gave her. The people around us would never know. To them, we were the perfect husband and wife. And I wouldn't deny it… we truly were.

A smirk tugged at my lips as I let out another relieved sigh.
