Chapter 17 - 17 Finals ain’t over yet

TD Garden's roar practically shattered the roof. Amid a green wave of cheers, the Finals Game 4 clock ticked relentlessly toward the end. LeBron James had just bulldozed his way to the rim, scoring over Tim Duncan's outstretched fingers—and drawing a foul. He cut the deficit to 1. Then he sank the free throw. Tie game! But the Spurs held the final possession. Fifteen seconds left.

LeBron panted, sweat dripping down his jawline—but his eyes cut like a hawk's. Even through the exhaustion, his mind raced. He glanced at the Spurs' bench, where Gregg Popovich scribbled on a whiteboard, talking straight to Tony Parker. LeBron could almost read the play: Duncan would likely set a screen, letting Parker use the pick-and-roll to drive or pass. Or they'd hand it to Manu Ginobili for the clutch shot.

"No way they run that clean," LeBron thought, a risky idea sparking. He took a deep breath and stepped to Coach O'Brien.

"Coach," his voice was hoarse from fatigue, but sharp with resolve. "Last play—let me guard Tim Duncan. Have Mark Blount take Parker. Switch the assignments. I know their play. Tim's probably just a decoy, but I'm gonna shut down their safest option. Force 'em to change plans."

Coach O'Brien's eyes widened. A wing guarding a all-time great power forward like Duncan? It was a gamble! But staring at LeBron—eyes burning hot, yet cold as steel—he nodded, almost against his better judgment. LeBron's age-defying decisiveness and knack for reading the game had proven itself, over and over.

"Do it like he said!" O'Brien yelled to the court.

LeBron walked straight to Duncan, planting himself beside him. Duncan's stone-faced expression flickered with a hint of surprise—then vanished.

The Spurs inbounded the ball. Sure enough, it went to Parker. Duncan moved to set the screen, just like the play called. But LeBron stood like a boulder, wedging himself in front of Duncan. He dug in with all his strength to lock up Duncan's hips, never letting him set a clean pick. His defense was aggressive, arms swiping to throw Duncan off rhythm.

Parker hesitated. The play's first step was broken! The clock ticked down—he had to act. He abandoned the screen, deciding to go one-on-one. A crossover, a burst of speed—he tried to blow past Blount, who'd switched onto him.

But Blount's feet were quick. He stuck to Parker, herding him toward the baseline corner. Trapped, Parker jumped, trying to pass to Duncan—who LeBron shadowed like a shadow.

The second the ball left Parker's fingers, LeBron moved like he'd read the future. He snapped his body around, swinging his long arm.

Smack!

His fingertips grazed the ball. It veered off course, heading for the sideline!

"LeBron! Steal! That's LeBron James!" the announcer screamed.

LeBron pounced like a cheetah for the ball, snatching it just inches from going out of bounds. He hurled it to the closest teammate—Paul Pierce! Three seconds left!

Pierce caught it, with Bruce Bowen flying at him to contest. No time to think—he jumped and shot on instinct.

The ball arced through the air…

The arena went silent.

Thud!

It bounced off the back of the rim and clattered out.

The red light flashed. Overtime!

Pierce hunched over, hands on his head in frustration. LeBron climbed to his feet and clapped Pierce's back. "Ain't over yet. Overtime—we take it back." His tone was calm, like that game-saving stop and the missed buzzer-beater were just steps in the process.

Overtime belonged entirely to LeBron James. The Spurs, reeling from the failed final play and drained legs, had lost their spark. LeBron took over. First, he drove hard to the rim, twisting mid-air to avoid Duncan's block and banking it in. Next, he dished to Eric Williams for an open three. On defense, he switched back onto Duncan, disrupting a sure low-post bucket.

In the end, the Celtics crushed the Spurs with a 10-2 run in overtime. They'd won the crucial Game 4—series lead 3-1!

LeBron finished with a historic line: 41 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks. And when it mattered most, he'd delivered the defense that saved the game—and steadyed his team.

Afterward, the media went wild. Every camera focused on LeBron.

"LeBron! You asked to guard Tim Duncan at the end—that steal changed everything. What were you thinking?"

LeBron wiped sweat from his face. No wild celebration—just laser focus. "I just wanted to do whatever it took to win. Tim's a great player, but in that moment, I knew I could stop him. My teammates trusted me. Coach trusted me. I had to deliver."

"Paul missed the buzzer-beater, but you guys won in OT. What do you say about that?"

"Paul fought all night. He got us so many chances. That shot didn't fall, but next play, the play after—we're still giving him the ball. That's team. We believe in each other. This win's for all of us."

The room erupted in applause.

But in the tunnel to the locker room, LeBron crossed paths with Tim Duncan, who was heading out. They locked eyes.

Duncan spoke first, voice low. "Great defense, LeBron. You saw every move coming."

LeBron's eyes stayed steady. "I just wanted to win, Tim. Whatever it took."

Duncan stared at him a long second. "Finals ain't over yet." Then he turned and walked away.

LeBron watched his back. He knew Popovich and the Spurs wouldn't go down easy. But he also knew—this win wasn't just a 3-1 lead. It was a mental blow to the "unbeatable" Spurs dynasty.

He pulled out his phone and texted Lisa Kruger: "Time to start. Focus points: LeBron James' clutch defense shows elite basketball IQ; 3-1 lead, the new king rises; the Spurs dynasty fades."

Soon, social media exploded with topics: "LeBron's game-saving defense on Duncan," "James the master of anticipation," "41-point triple-double dominates OT." And "Pierce's missed buzzer-beater" was soft-pedaled—twisted into a "story of team trust."

LeBron put his phone away and walked toward the locker room. Inside, the cheers were deafening. He knew the throne was just one win away. And no one would stop him from taking it. The reborn king was ready to be crowned.
