Chapter 7 - Jagged Edges of a Dream

Koi doesn't know how he made it through the day. His head was swimming the whole time, and there wasn't a chance he'd be able to concentrate in any of his classes.

"At least it was over..." He muttered. He couldn't wait to get back to his dorm room and rest and THINK. He barely had a moment to process the dream he had last night. A dream he knew was more than a dream, it was a declaration of WAR. Ketsu was determined to keep his favorite magic tool, KOI, and he wanted the darkest, most dead self personality to work with.

Koi didn't want to fall into that darkness, that numbness where nothing matters. There had to be something he could do to fight back and save himself from becoming the living dead, the anger-filled Koi that had terrified him in his dream.

Koi heard a bird squacking and looked up. Above him was a black raven circling above. He was in the halls, about to exit the school and get on with life, but as soon as he saw the bird, he knew trouble was near.

From the bird's ass and egg crash lands on Koi's face. He sighs—the students in the hall who saw snickered and pointed. Everyone knew what "Egg on Face" meant. It meant someone was in trouble and was going to have to go to the principal's office.

The school principal, Professor Diaz, was a powerful Vampire and Wizard, but he was also somewhat of a crackpot and had no use for subtlety or doing things the normal way. Thus, he sent messages via a big crow dropping eggs on your face.

Koi saw a yellow slip of paper in the yolk and pulled it out, flinging egg on whoever was not smart enough to stay away from him, and read it.

My office. NOW. - Love Professor Diaz.

Koi sighed. So much for a relaxing evening at home, healing and figuring out what Ketsu's next move was going to be. He had to get to the principal's office, or he was done for.

Diaz's Office

Koi's black combat boots stepped into the office. There were two chairs in front of him, but both were occupied, one by Adam and one by Ethan. The duo seemed to already be engaged in an argument. Professor Diaz sat behind his desk, absently playing with a switch knife. You would have thought that he was the student, thoroughly bored with Adam nd Ethan's meandering and complaining.

Finally, Professor Diaz notices Koi standing there awkwardly and sits up, smiling, and puts the knife down for a second.

"Koi, there you are! How nice of you to--"

"Is that the guy who dispelled Ethan's bullshit magic?" Adam blurted out, turning to eyeball Koi.

"Look at him, he looks like a spazz! Yet this guy is already better at magic than you, TWAZZER!"

"American, you are fucking rude. That jackass saved your life." Ethan says, his French accent thick and smarmy as he looks at Adam with disgust. "So what, he looks like a spazz. Everyone looks horrible compared to me. You look like a crispy, fat potato chip compared to a full meal like me. So you're in no position to talk, American!"

Koi tilted his head like a confused dog. He had not yet said a blessed word, but these two were already ripping him apart.

"This is why we gotta close the borders. You see this guy?" Adam says to Diaz. "And dude has a drinking problem, look how he talks! He's gotta be drunk right now!"

"Kirage gets no bitches." Ethan mutters, pushing sunglasses on his face as if Adams' virginity was blazing so bright it was giving his eyes sun damage.

"Bro, just because every skank in Menzai isn't on me doesn't mean I get no bitches." Adam defends. "Women are very attracted to my high intelligence, but only intelligent girls seek out a guy like me. You, on the other hand, seem to be more attractive to weirdo's like this these days."

He twerks his head, motioning to Koi. Ethan finally turns to look at him, pulling his shades down a bit to get a look at this newcomer.

Koi stood there uncomfortably, looking up at the ceiling. Why? Because why not? Adam and Ethan were like wild animals, and he felt that if he looked either of them in the eye, they would get spooked and might physically attack him. Diaz was no safer. The ceiling was the safest thing to look at. He decided to keep his eyes up there, come hell or high water.

Adam and Ethan looked at Koi, then looked at each other, then looked at Koi again. Diaz noticed this was the first time these two had shut up since they've been in his office. He smiles, feeling that confirmed that he was on the right track with what he was thinking.

"Listen, I brought you boys in here not so you can continue arguing and fighting with each other. I just wanted a good idea of what happened on the tennis court." Diaz began.

"It's obvious what happened!" Adam began. "This nitwit knew there was no way he was going to win, so he had to bring his illogical voodoo bullshit into it to try to turn the tide."

"I just made the game more interesting, Adam" Ethan muttered.

"You're freaking dull, Kirage!"

"And then someone pulled a dispell, which released you both from the mess you made on the field," Professor Diaz completed, reaching for some paperwork on his desk.

"And the caster of that spell was you, wasn't it, Koi?"

Koi's eyes fell on Professor Diaz for a moment, but only for a moment. He didn't know what he had to be worried about, but he was worried none the less. He sensed trouble from the sound of Diaz's voice.

Koi's eyes rolled back up to the safety of the ceiling again. It was popcorn ceilings. Don't those things pose a high risk of asbestos exposure? "Uhm..."

Adam and Ethan continued to glare at him, then at each other, then at Diaz as if they blamed him for forcing them to be in the presence of such a dork as Koi. Diaz was reading over some of the papers in the file he had pulled up, ignoring the two because what else should you do with annoying children but ignore them?

"That's an interesting spell you pulled off, Koi. Quite beautiful. If I remember correctly, there was an old wizardess named Madam D'Orva who often conducted spells using butterflies. It seems like you have mastered that spell."

Professor Diaz adjusted the glasses on his face.

"Which is quite interesting, because that is something we do not teach in this school. And mastering another wizard's signature is quite a dangerous feat. Unless the wizard is dead, of course, which Madam D'Orva is. But still, there are hazards and consequences to it. And it's a difficult thing to learn to do. I'd like to know how you managed to learn such a spell, Koi..."

Ohhhhh crap...Koi panicked silently, his eyes still up on the ceiling. This was his own stupid fault. For some reason, he thought he was sooo advanced that the teachers wouldn't know anything about the signature spells. How foolish he was to think Diaz would be ignorant of that kind of power.

Riconzi was back in his dorm room, at least. Thank God he hadn't brought the book with him today. But still, he had to come up with an excuse and fast. Riconzi was restricted material; if that book got found out, he would get expelled and sent back home to his parents. And there was no way in hell Koi would survive, getting sent back home to his parents. How was he going to get out of this one now?
