Evelyn had been sitting on her bed with bleary eyes for a while now. She told herself that she had to stay awake to see what time Nathan would come back but as she grew sleepy, she decided it wasn't worth it.
She looked at the time that read 2am and couldn't help but laugh at his boldness. He really didn't take her seriously.
She picked up her phone and after calculating the time difference, made a call. She waited with slight anxiousness for the call to be answered.
She knew that once this step was taken, there was no going back. She realized that despite all the harsh words and resolutions she made in her mind, this was when she actually let him go.
The phone didn't ring for long before the call was answered. The voice from the other side was slightly hoarse. Wasn't it supposed to be 12pm there, why was this dude just waking up now?
The person seemed to realize whose call they had just answered.
"Evie.. oh my gosh why are you calling this early?"
Evelyn resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
"Lenny, when did 12pm become early?"
There was some rumbling from the other side and Evelyn heard the sound of something falling.
"Oh right. It is. I must've been too busy last night and unconsciously slept this long."
After saying this, she suddenly sobered up.
"Evie did something happen? It should be around 2am back home right? With your health preserving way of living, you should definitely be asleep by now. Tell me, what happened. Did someone die? Did Nathan's company go bankrupt?"
Evelyn laughed despite herself.
"Are those the only things that can make me call you this late?"
Selene hesitated but still told the truth.
"Ermm, Evie you need to have some self awareness okay."
Evelyn laughed slightly. She did have self awareness. It was found after being lost for years but it was here now.
"There's something I want to tell you but you have to promise me not to get angry."
When Selene heard this, she knew that whatever Evelyn wanted to say would definitely be rage inducing so she refused.
"I'm not promising anything. Just tell me. I'll keep calm."
Evelyn took a deep breath then said it all in one breath.
"Nathan is cheating on me."
The line went silent for a while and Evelyn wondered if the connection had been cut of when Selene's voice came from the receiver calling out a string of curses.
Evelyn was stunned. She knew Selene's vocabulary was colourful but some of these, she had just heard today. She needed to get Selene to teach her sometime.
Selene vented partly and managed to calm down somewhat. Without thinking about it, she directly asked.
"You're going to divorce him aren't you?"
If it were anyone else, they might have hesitated thinking that Evelyn loved Nathan too much to let go but Selene wasn't like that.
She believed that no matter how much Evelyn liked Nathan, she would not tolerate her bottom line being crossed and her sincerity being trampled upon like that.
Even though she was a loved brain person, Selene believed that the Evelyn who would always put herself first was in there somewhere.
Hearing that this was her first question, Evelyn softly laughed. Probably no one except Selene would have such absolute faith in her. Even her senior seemed unsure.
This was why they were best friends. Her mood suddenly improved and she hummed.
"I already contacted uncle Xavi to draft a divorce agreement and senior Miles helped me find evidence."
Selene was listening honestly but couldn't help but be distracted when she heard that name.
"Miles? As in Miles Bennet?"
Evelyn was surprised
"Hmmm. Are you familiar with him?"
Selene smiled faintly but one could notice the faint traces of sadness in his eyes.
"You could say so."
That man had stopped her at the airport begging her not to leave. She was stunned because she had not had more than five interactions with him in total.
She still left. But the memory of that day stayed with her till now. If his goal was to leave a lasting impact on her then he succeeded.
She shook her head slightly to clear the thoughts. This wasn't the time to talk about her own issues.
"Do you think he's going to agree to get divorced?"
The topic jumped back to the previous one but Evelyn didn't pursue it. She knew that Selene would definitely confide in her when she was ready.
"I'm not quite sure but I hope so. You see, I've found that I don't actually know him that much. I called him husband for two years but the only impression of him I have seemed to have come from our childhood. This is probably why it took me so long to catch on. I was stuck in the past."
Selene comforted her softly.
"There there. We all make mistakes sometimes. It isn't worth it to cry over a man."
You could fly to a different continent and not return to your home country in three years. That's what she did. But she didn't dare to say the words out loud. Till this day, Mo Shengsheng still didn't know why she had gone abroad.
At first, she was afraid of Evelyn killing that man if she found out what happened and then later she felt it just wasn't worth holding on to anymore.
Her bruised heart was healed and her best friend needed her. What better time could there be to return home.
"I'll be coming back today."
"Really?"
Evelyn knew something happened with Selene to make her go abroad just after graduation but she didn't know what it was.
"Are you sure?"
Selene knew Evelyn was thinking about her and her heart felt warm.
"Of course. You go to bed. I'll book a flight right now."
Evelyn felt happy. With Selene here, she felt like she was alot stronger.
"Thank you Lenny."
"It's what I should do baby. Now go to sleep. I can't wait to see you again."
They ended the call and Selene immediately started booking her flight. Just like Evelyn was there for her before, she would be Eveie's pillar of support now.
