The ferocious ghost, having revealed its true form, had not even had the chance to show its power before it was swallowed whole by the beastly sovereign's head surging out from the Huangyao Banner.
"Trying to bite my head off?"Luo Yu chuckled. Before stepping onto the bridge, he had already been on guard—how could he possibly fall for such a trick so easily? The other party was luring him closer, but in truth, he had been waiting for it to approach.
The beast sovereign residing within the Huangyao Banner was currently limited by his cultivation level and the damage sustained by the artifact itself, making it impossible to fully summon it. However, unleashing a portion of its power at close range was still feasible.
With the lurking ghost within the emerald-green lake subdued, the winding path returned to its deathly silence. The mist ahead slowly dispersed, revealing the hidden scene beyond.
Luo Yu's spirits lifted as he looked into the distance.
Both sky and earth were dim and lightless. If not for his special pupils, he would have been unable to discern the distant scenery at all.
There stood a chaotic forest of withered, irregular tree branches, from which streams of dark green ghostly flames rose. An icy storm seemed to sweep through the area, the ghost flames flickering erratically.
An oppressive feeling welled up within Luo Yu. Leaving aside the omnipresent danger, the environment alone made him deeply uncomfortable—especially since he had come here alone, without even someone to talk to and pass the time.
"Boom!!"
Moments later, Luo Yu hovered in midair, explosive sounds echoing behind him as he burst out from the ghost-flame-entangled forest. The Soul-Suppressing Hammer and Soul-Shocking Gong in his hands continued to pulse with dark black and muted golden light.
Earlier, he had been ambushed within the forest. Numerous withered trees, possessed by vengeful spirits, had launched a frenzied assault on him. The trees appeared ancient and decayed, yet were astonishingly tough—impervious to hammer strikes and impossible to break.
If not for his manipulation of the Soul-Shocking Gong, using soundwaves to destroy the spirits from within, attacking externally alone would have been futile. In the end, he would likely have been trapped and killed alive.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
Suddenly, a bell tolled across heaven and earth. Luo Yu frowned in confusion. Normally, a bell's sound should be clear and melodious, yet this one was muffled and sinister, instilling unease in the listener.
Following the direction of the sound, Luo Yu spotted a massive city standing in the distance. The entire city was constructed from blood-red stone blocks that faintly emitted a dull crimson glow, exuding an ancient, weathered aura.
The city gates, towering six or seven meters high, were tightly shut, devoid of any sign of life. From afar, faint patterns could be seen carved upon them.
With no reason to linger—since the path ahead seemed to be the only option—Luo Yu soon arrived before the city gates.
The bronze gates were engraved with two ferocious, fanged demons, their bodies covered in green scales, dragging grotesque tails. Their claws were nearly half a meter long, and the rusted door rings hung more than two meters above the ground.
He reached out to push the gate. It did not budge at first. Bending his knees and channeling his soul power, Luo Yu forced it open with both hands. The ancient bronze gate creaked loudly as it finally gave way.
"Cough, cough… Looks like no one's been here for a very long time," Luo Yu muttered.
As the gate opened, thick layers of dust fell from it. He waved his arms, coughing as he dispersed the choking clouds of debris.
Upon entering the city, he found no residential buildings or streets—only an immense plaza and a towering hall standing far in the distance, its details obscured.
The plaza's ground was entirely paved with blood-red mineral stone, and at its center appeared to be an altar.
Unwilling to invite unnecessary trouble, Luo Yu bypassed the altar and crossed the plaza, heading straight toward the divine hall.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
The bell rang again. Luo Yu quickly determined that the sound originated from within the towering hall. As he listened, he felt as though his consciousness was being drawn out of his body, compelled to follow the bell's call.
Shaking his head, he muttered darkly, "This is way too twisted. What kind of god makes their inheritance site look like a graveyard—and makes it this creepy?"
Standing before the hall, Luo Yu shivered involuntarily. The jet-black structure radiated a chilling, sinister aura that pierced straight to the soul. Nearly a hundred steps led up to its entrance, and there was no plaque above the doors.
Adjusting the Huangyao Banner draped over his shoulders and gripping his two spiritual artifacts, Luo Yu took a deep breath, stepped forward, and shoved open the ancient doors.
Clang! Clang! Clang!!
Waves of sound burst forth from within the hall, surging outward with renewed ferocity as the doors opened.
Before Luo Yu could even enter, he was blasted backward by the bell's resonance. His head throbbed violently, and his soul felt as though it were about to leave his body. Only when the primal sources of Zhu Zhao and You Ying faintly glowed did his soul get forcibly dragged back.
"Who's pretending to be a god here?!" Luo Yu roared toward the hall, golden light blazing in his eyes.
Having come this far, he had nothing left to fear. He had seen far greater scenes in his past life—today, he would uncover the truth no matter what.
"Huh? No one?" Luo Yu exclaimed in surprise.
Suspended from dozens of iron chains within the hall was a massive bronze bell, swaying gently. Strange beastly patterns were carved upon it—depicting a colossal hou roaring toward the heavens.
Behind the bell stood a towering obsidian statue of a deity. Its eyes were closed, and it seemed to wear a faint, eerie smile. Its material was unknown, and it emanated no presence at all—like an ordinary sculpture.
Just as Luo Yu stepped closer to inspect it, the bronze bell suddenly boomed.
Dong!
Instantly, Luo Yu felt his soul splitting apart. Excruciating pain surged from the depths of his spirit. The Huangyao Banner activated automatically, releasing a veil of blue-black light that blocked the bell's assault.
After an unknown amount of time, Luo Yu regained consciousness. The banner's glow had dimmed considerably, while the bronze bell still trembled—though its oscillations had slowed noticeably.
Grinding his teeth in fury, Luo Yu realized that without his spiritual treasures protecting him, he would have been shaken to death by that bell alone. Activating his Piercing-Gold Eyes, he scanned the statue—only to find it completely hollow inside.
Turning his gaze to the restless bronze bell, Luo Yu narrowed his eyes.
"So it was you causing all this trouble."
A phantom was visible inside the bell, striking it repeatedly to unleash the attacks. Luo Yu raised the Soul-Suppressing Hammer, dark light surging from it, and struck the Soul-Shocking Gong.
Golden soundwaves rippled outward, colliding head-on with the bell's resonating waves.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
Ignoring the turmoil in his blood and the pallor of his face, Luo Yu continued striking the gong relentlessly, glaring viciously ahead. The bronze bell was clearly running out of strength, its toll growing weaker and weaker.
Finally, with a decisive strike—blood spraying from his mouth and nose—the gong erupted with blazing golden patterns. The soundwave tore through the air and slammed into the bell.
The bell's sound ceased abruptly.
A small, childlike phantom was forcibly震震震 shaken out of the bronze bell.
