Chapter 55 - The Farewell Before The Distance

Morning light slipped quietly through the window, soft and almost apologetic — as though it too sensed that something was about to change. The air between them wasn't cold, but it wasn't as warm as before. Nathan's eyes lingered on the floor for a while before he finally said it.

"Elena… there's something I've been meaning to tell you."

His voice trembled — not out of fear, but from the weight of what he carried. He looked at her with a forced smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

"I've been sick," he confessed. "Really sick. I'm just starting to get myself back together. But… a lot has happened, and I think… I think I'll be dropping out of school."

The words hit Elena like a quiet thunder. She blinked, unsure if she'd heard right. Dropping out?

Nathan went on, his tone steady but distant. "I'll be relocating. Life's been rough lately, and I just— I need to focus on my music. It's the one thing that still makes me feel alive."

For a moment, the room went still. Only the sound of their breathing filled the silence. Elena tried to smile, but her lips refused to obey. Her heart was suddenly too heavy.

He was leaving.

And the timing — it was cruel.

Her thoughts ran wild, whispering questions she didn't dare to voice.

Why now? Why tell me this after everything that happened? After we just found our way back?

Her mind spun in circles, thinking of every late-night talk, every promise, every moment she thought meant forever.

Elena wasn't the kind of girl who easily spoke her fears. She carried them in silence, folded neatly inside her heart. She didn't want to seem like an obstacle to his dreams, didn't want him to think she was holding him back. So instead of begging him to stay, she looked him in the eye — her voice soft, trembling, yet brave.

"Just… promise me one thing," she said. "Promise you'll still text me. Call me. Don't disappear again. Just… let me know what's going on with you. Even if you can't talk much, just remind me you're still there."

Nathan sighed deeply, his expression torn between guilt and affection. "I promise," he said quietly. "It might be hard sometimes, but I'll be here. Always."

She nodded, fighting the ache building behind her eyes.

There was nothing left to say — just silence that spoke louder than words.

Nathan stepped closer, lifted his hand, and gently touched her face. For a moment, it felt like time had stopped — like the world had shrunk down to just the two of them and the echo of a goodbye that neither of them wanted to say.

He pulled her into his arms, his embrace slow, lingering, almost desperate. She could feel his heartbeat against her cheek, steady but heavy. Then, he kissed her forehead — a simple gesture, yet it carried the weight of everything they couldn't say.

That night, Elena lay awake, staring at the ceiling. Every word replayed in her mind, each one cutting deeper than the last. She wanted to believe his promise. She wanted to believe that love could stretch across cities, across silence, across distance. But a small voice inside her whispered otherwise.

The next day, she returned to school. The same walls, same faces, but everything felt different. Nathan had already relocated. His city was now hours away, and with it, a piece of her went missing too.

She tried to fill the silence with things that made sense — writing, music, random searches for online jobs. Anything to keep her mind from wandering to his side of the world.

They still texted. Sometimes. But every message felt shorter than the one before.

And deep down, Elena knew — love was changing form again.

The distance had already begun to speak.
