Chapter 143 - The Storm Challenger

Chapter 143 — The Storm Challenger

The storm arrived before the dawn.

At first it was only a distant rumble beyond the jagged towers of Ardrath. The city was still wounded from the Choir's assault. Broken streets split like old scars through the districts, and the faint glow of the Veins beneath the stone pulsed weakly, as though the city itself had not yet recovered from the violent struggle at the City Heart.

Yet the storm did not behave like a natural one.

The clouds gathered too quickly. They spiraled inward above Ardrath's central spire, forming a massive vortex of dark thunderheads. Lightning began crawling through the sky in thin, spiderlike veins of light.

Kael felt it immediately.

The Hollow Crown pulsed sharply against his skull.

He stood atop the City Heart's steps, watching the sky with narrowed eyes. Ironroot threads stirred beneath his boots, restless.

Liora joined him moments later, her silver aura faint but steady.

"You feel that too," she said quietly.

Kael nodded.

"This isn't the Veins," he replied. "Something else is touching the network."

Behind them, Dren stepped forward, resting his massive cleaver against his shoulder.

"Well whatever it is," he muttered, "it's coming straight for us."

Another thunderclap split the sky.

Then the lightning struck.

Not randomly.

Precisely.

Three bolts crashed down into the ruined plaza ahead of the City Heart, blasting stone into the air. The shockwave rippled through the shattered streets, sending dust rolling across the broken district.

When the light faded, a figure stood in the smoking crater.

Tall.

Armored in dark blue metal that glimmered with thin streaks of silver lightning.

A long cloak snapped behind him in the storm winds, and electricity crawled across the surface of his armor like living serpents.

His eyes glowed faintly.

Dren squinted.

"Well," he grunted, "that's new."

The stranger stepped forward slowly.

Lightning flickered again above him, illuminating a sharp, battle-scarred face.

Kael felt the Hollow Crown pulse harder.

Recognition.

Not of the man himself.

But of the power he carried.

The stranger stopped twenty paces away.

For a moment he simply studied Kael.

Then he spoke.

"You are the one they call Ironroot."

His voice carried easily through the rising wind.

Kael didn't move.

"That depends who's asking."

The man tilted his head slightly.

"I am Vaelis, Storm Warden of Varkyros."

Another lightning bolt cracked through the clouds behind him, briefly outlining his figure against the dark sky.

Liora stepped forward slightly.

"And why has a Storm Warden traveled across half the continent to stand in a broken city?" she asked.

Vaelis's gaze never left Kael.

"Because the Veins screamed."

The wind intensified.

"When the Hollow Crown awakened fully," Vaelis continued, "every Sky Vein across the northern skies felt it."

He took another step closer.

"Power like that cannot be trusted to just anyone."

Dren snorted.

"Careful," he said. "You're starting to sound like a threat."

Vaelis ignored him.

His focus remained locked on Kael.

"So I came to see the one who carries the Crown."

A long silence stretched between them.

Lightning flashed again.

Then Vaelis's eyes hardened.

"And decide whether you deserve it."

The storm exploded.

Without warning, Vaelis lifted his hand.

A bolt of lightning screamed down from the clouds.

Kael reacted instantly.

Iron pillars erupted from the fractured street, intercepting the lightning blast. The impact shattered the pillars into molten fragments that sprayed across the plaza.

Dren roared.

"Oh good," he said, lifting his cleaver. "We're fighting."

Vaelis moved faster than expected.

The storm obeyed him like a weapon.

Lightning bolts crashed around Kael in rapid succession, forcing him backward as iron barriers erupted from the ground to block the strikes.

Each impact sent tremors through the Veins beneath the city.

Liora raised her hands.

Silver energy flared outward, intercepting a spiraling arc of electricity that threatened to tear through a nearby building.

"Kael!" she shouted. "He's drawing power directly from the sky!"

Kael's eyes burned with iron light.

"I noticed."

Vaelis surged forward through the rain of sparks.

His armor ignited with lightning as he swung his arm down.

A blade of condensed storm energy formed in his hand.

Kael countered.

Iron chains erupted from the street beneath Vaelis's feet, snapping upward like living serpents.

Vaelis twisted mid-strike.

Lightning burst from his body, shattering the chains before they could bind him.

The clash detonated with explosive force.

Dren charged into the fight.

His cleaver ignited with molten Vein energy as he swung toward Vaelis's flank.

Vaelis didn't even look.

A bolt of lightning struck the ground beside Dren, blasting him sideways across the broken street.

Dren slammed into a collapsed wall with a furious laugh.

"Alright," he growled, pulling himself up. "You're fun."

Kael stepped forward.

Ironroot power surged beneath the city.

The streets cracked open.

Massive iron spikes erupted toward Vaelis from every direction.

Vaelis raised both hands.

The storm answered.

A ring of lightning exploded outward from his body, vaporizing the iron spikes before they could reach him.

For the first time, Vaelis smiled slightly.

"So it's true," he said.

"You command the Veins."

Kael advanced slowly.

"And you command storms."

Another lightning strike slammed into the plaza.

The battle intensified.

Iron pillars rose and shattered.

Lightning tore across the sky.

The two powers collided again and again, shaking the ruined district with every impact.

Liora shielded nearby buildings from stray strikes while Dren circled the battlefield, waiting for an opening.

But Vaelis was relentless.

He attacked Kael from every direction, the storm bending to his will like a living weapon.

Finally Vaelis leapt high into the air.

The clouds above the city roared.

A massive lightning spear began forming above him.

Its glow lit the entire skyline of Ardrath.

Dren's eyes widened.

"Oh… that's not good."

Vaelis's voice echoed through the thunder.

"Let us see if the Ironroot Crown can survive this."

He thrust his hand downward.

The lightning spear descended.

Kael did not move.

Instead he closed his eyes briefly.

The Hollow Crown pulsed.

Deep beneath Ardrath, the Ironroot network awakened.

Massive iron chains erupted from the ground.

Hundreds of them.

They shot upward into the sky, intercepting the lightning spear.

The impact detonated with a blinding flash.

When the light faded, the chains remained intact.

Vaelis landed silently.

For the first time his expression changed.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Respect.

Kael stepped forward through the smoke.

Iron energy burned around him.

"I'm not your enemy," he said calmly.

"Then prove it."

The two stood face to face.

The storm began to weaken.

Vaelis studied Kael for a long moment.

Then the lightning around him faded.

"You are stronger than I expected."

He turned slightly toward the shattered city behind them.

"But strength alone does not make a ruler worthy of the Veins."

He looked back at Kael one last time.

"I will be watching you, Ironroot."

Lightning struck again.

But this time it lifted him into the sky.

Within seconds, the storm began to disperse.

The clouds drifted apart.

The thunder faded.

Vaelis was gone.

Silence returned to the ruined plaza.

Dren exhaled slowly.

"Well," he said, resting his cleaver on his shoulder.

"That was a nice warm-up."

Liora looked toward the clearing sky.

"He'll come back."

Kael stared upward where the Storm Warden had vanished.

"Yes," he said quietly.

"He will."

And deep beneath the city, the Veins pulsed again.

As if acknowledging the arrival of new players in a war that was only just beginning.
