Chapter 3 - COUNTERATTACK

☆Alice

"I still can't believe what I saw," Harugaki shouted, gasping for breath after the run.We had stopped in a green area to rest.

"How can a power like that even exist? A black hole?! What the hell were those lunatics thinking?"I was just as shaken.

"That's not the real problem," Joshua said seriously. "Remember, we're trapped down here to test their infusions. If the Minister orders mass production of that Tornado or the Black Hole, it could trigger a global war!"

Even if I manage to get out of here, if a war breaks out, I'll lose everything I hold dear. "We have to stop the Minister at all costs. I don't want a war to erupt! If I have to, I'll punch him in the face myself!"

"We don't even know if we'll ever get out of this place. We've already seen three people die. The deaths will definitely continue, and with my ability, I don't think I'll last much longer," Harugaki said, throwing himself to the ground.

"Tsk." With my super-powered fists, I grabbed him by the collar of his hideous shirt and yanked him up. "Quit whining—are you a man or not? Pull yourself together! We're all getting out of here, and we're going to expose the Minister, BeBe, and every one of those people betting on our lives."

I remembered the man with the caterpillar avatar—he only wanted me to win because he'd bet on me.

I let go of Harugaki and turned to Joshua. "Let's hurry. We have to find Shiori-chi. She might be in danger all by herself..."

Suddenly, my bracelet lit up and played a little tune. Then, BeBe's hologram appeared. Joshua and Harugaki were looking at their own holograms as well.

"Good evening, my dear little darlings!" he announced. "Having fun? I hope so, because we're having the time of our lives up here, right guys?"

We heard the cheering of the avatars of our bettors. They were hyping up their favorites. "Go, Soldier!" "Give it your all, Queen!" "Show us what you've got, Huntress!" "Aren't you a Terrorist? Blow them all to hell!"

The caterpillar just stared at me in silence.

"Aren't you going to cheer for your favorite? Ahahah!" laughed that bastard with the donkey avatar.

"There's no need to cheer. I can see the determination in her eyes," the caterpillar calmly replied.

"Donkey, you better hope I don't make it out of here alive—because if I do, my first punch will be for you." I showed my fist to the avatar, but he burst out laughing.

"Really? Ahahaha! You're killing me here."

"Yeah, laugh while you still can. I'll be the one laughing later, you piece of shit."

"Alright, that's enough! We've had our fun, and everyone's shared their words of encouragement with their favorites... but now, let's get serious," BeBe interjected. "First of all, let's remember those who've left us so far. In 24th place, Hoshii Maya, the Shrine Maiden. In 23rd place, Fukuyama Teppei, the Thug. In 22nd place, our dear Lady, Madame Gabrielle Laurent. That's it for now. Just a reminder: every 12 hours, along with providing you with new backpacks full of supplies, we'll announce everyone who died in that time frame. Current time: midnight! We'll continue watching over you, and your BeBe will always be available—whether you need advice or just feel lonely and want someone to chat with!"

The bracelet powered down, and the holograms vanished.

"Shiori-chi is still alive!" I shouted joyfully. "Come on, we have to go find her!"

Joshua smiled at me sweetly, which made me a little embarrassed… then he gently patted my head."I'm glad Shiori-chan's alive too, but we can't keep moving without rest, or we'll collapse from exhaustion."

"Joshua's right," Harugaki agreed. "We've been walking for a while without a break. It'd be best if we slept for a few hours."

"I get it, but Shiori-chi is out there alone among those hybrids. She could be in danger!"

"Shiori-chan's held her own so far. I'm sure she'll be fine. She's not a little girl."

"Tomorrow, we'll search all day. But in this state, we won't be able to run or fight if we run into more hybrids."

"Alice-chan, get some rest. I'll take the first watch, then I'll wake Harugaki. You fought well today—you deserve a break," said Joshua.

They were right. I could feel the fatigue deep in my bones. Reluctantly, I lay down and rested my head on my arm.

"If you need rest, wake me up. I'll take a watch too," I said before closing my eyes.

☆Shiori

Tsukima-san walked beside me, spinning her gun in her hands and whistling carefreely.Just a few minutes had passed since BeBe's announcement, and a new function had just been added to our bracelets: from now on, we could see all the participants still alive—those who had died were crossed out.

I remembered those people: the shrine maiden who had been near the boy with long red hair; the guy who stared intently at me and Alice-chan; and the older woman with a young girl by her side.I wondered who had killed them… hybrids, or other competitors?

"Shiori-chan, your friends are doing pretty well, even if they're just kids. Looks like your school knows how to train survivors," Tsukima-san laughed. "I wonder what kind of ability my boyfriend got. I hope it's something truly amazing—otherwise, I'll tease him for the rest of his life, ahahah!"

I gave a faint smile, and tried to imagine what powers Alice-chan, Joshua-kun, and Harugaki might have gotten. Alice-chan is so strong—I hope she became even stronger, like the protagonists in anime. Joshua-kun surely got an ability that lets him fight with both agility and grace. As for Harugaki… I couldn't quite imagine what kind of power he could have, but all I saw in my mind were funny scenes of him inflating like a balloon.

"Shiori-chan, this way!" Tsukima-san grabbed my arm and dragged me behind a wall. "Not a sound!"

She pressed a hand over my mouth and stayed still.

For a moment I thought she was trying to suffocate me, but then I realized she was listening intently to something.

Then I heard it too—footsteps, and another sound. Something was hitting the walls. It didn't sound metallic… more like a fist, but soft and slimy at the same time.

We stayed frozen against the wall, then began to inch away slowly. The footsteps were getting closer.

On tiptoe, step by step, we moved along the wall.

The footsteps stopped. Whoever it was only had to turn the corner, and they'd see us.

"Shiori-chan, make a shield," Tsukima-san whispered, aiming her gun at the shadow lurking just around the corner.

I created a shield at head height, enough to protect my whole body, but I left the lower part open so Tsukima-san could fire through. My shield works both ways, and the last thing I wanted was to die from a bullet ricocheting off my own power.

"Come out—I know you're there, and you know I'm here!" Tsukima-san ordered. She spoke in singular—I guessed she didn't want to reveal I was with her. "Hands up, and step into view!"

I watched the shadow: the right hand was raised above the head, but I couldn't see the left hand because of the wall blocking part of it.

"Now come forward!" Tsukima-san repeated.

When the shadow moved, I saw two long braids—and in less than a second, I remembered who was the only girl among the contestants with that hairstyle.

"It's her!" I cried out, instinctively pulling back.

Tsukima-san turned to look at me, momentarily distracted. That mistake gave our enemy the opening she needed.

In an instant, a massive tentacle—thick as an adult man's body—lashed out from around the corner and slammed into my shield. The blow was so powerful it knocked both me and Tsukima-san to the ground.

There she was—the person all of Japan feared, the one no one had ever managed to catch: the terrorist Ichinose Saya!

"Well, well… I caught two at once. I was getting tired of crushing those dumb, brainless beasts." The huge tentacle moved on its own—it was her left arm.

"Die, you bitch!" Tsukima-san shouted, firing at her chest.

Saya's tentacle moved quickly and absorbed the bullet. Some drops of blood splashed onto our clothes, but I couldn't scream. I was frozen in terror.

The tentacle lashed out again and struck Tsukima-san, sending her flying to the side. Then it came down on me. I rolled onto my left side and slammed into the opposite wall. If I'd stayed where I was, I would've been crushed against the floor, which was now covered in cracks.

Tsukima-san fired again, but the tentacle intercepted all the bullets.

"Run, Shiori-chan! Get out of here!" she yelled.

"I can't leave you, Tsukima-san!"

"You're the only one who knows a way to get out of here—you have to live!"

That's when I understood her strategy—she wanted Saya to believe I knew how to escape, so she'd spare me.

"And I'm supposed to believe that?" the terrorist laughed. "There's no way out of here!"

"If there's no way out," Tsukima-san pressed, "then why were we threatened with these collars if we tried to escape?"

Saya paused for a second to think—but that second was all Tsukima-san needed to use her ability. The terrorist suddenly floated into the air, unable to move.

"You little brats—you tricked me!"

"No, the exit exists—but don't count on our help!" Tsukima-san laughed and shot her in the leg.

Saya screamed and cursed us a thousand different ways, but Tsukima-san ran up to me and motioned for me to run.

"Her levitation will wear off soon, and she'll come after us again—though I doubt she can chase us with that leg injury. Hopefully, the smell of blood will attract the hybrids, and they'll finish her off."

Tsukima-san could've shot her in the head and killed her… but she had deliberately aimed for the leg, to draw the mutants to her. Maybe she wanted that terrorist—who had killed hundreds—to feel the same pain she had caused others. Or maybe… she wanted to use her as bait, to keep the hybrids away from us.

After running for several minutes, we stopped near a staircase that descended deep underground and led to a small pond. "We should be safe here," I said, catching my breath.

"If we run into her again, promise me that if I tell you to run, you'll do it," she said, her expression deadly serious. "That goes for the hybrids and the other contestants too."

"But I can't do that… After everything you've done—and are still doing—for me, how could I just leave you?" When I first met her, I didn't trust her at all. I was convinced she'd pull her gun on me at any moment and kill me. But she never did. She protected me from hybrids, helped me cross the river, and saved me from the Terrorist. I could feel she was strong—someone I could rely on. In some ways, she reminded me of Alice‑chan.

"Listen to me. You're the only one who might be able to get us out of here. If I have to give my life to get you safely to that pillar, I'll do it without hesitation. Even if I die, the others might still make it. I don't want anyone else to die here, but if I'm forced to kill, I want to do it with hope—that you'll be the one to save us."

Tears welled up in my eyes. I trembled at the thought of being left alone again… or of losing my new friend.

"Stop crying. Don't get all worked up over someone you've only known for a few hours. Besides, I'm not dead yet!" She gently wiped away my tears and smiled.

I nodded slowly, but my tears wouldn't stop. Without someone to help me, I felt useless—I didn't want to be alone again. I imagined Tsukima-san being attacked by hybrids, shouting at me to run, but I stayed by her side until the end.

"Think about your friends. They need you. You have to get them out of here."

Those words brought me back to my old self. That's right—I had to save Alice-chan, Joshua-kun, and Harugaki too.

"There you are, you damn whores!"

The scream came from above our heads. Saya was clinging to the wall using the suction cups on her tentacle—she hadn't even needed to walk. She was covered in wounds and blood. She must've fought several hybrids along the way.

Tsukima-san pulled out her gun and fired, but Saya jumped off the wall and landed right on her. They both tumbled down the stairs and into the water.

As if by magic, all of Saya's wounds healed, and the blood washed away.

"It's really a pity that the weapon assigned to a terrorist like me was nothing but a useless toothpick. A young lady like you shouldn't handle guns, you might hurt yourself," Saya laughed. Saya charged at Tsukima-san, and she fired, hitting her in the heart. But the terrorist's charge didn't stop! As if she hadn't taken any hit, she reached Tsukima-san with a smile and threw her into the water. A new shot struck Saya's throat, but the wound healed immediately, and the bullet fell out. "As long as I'm in the water, I can regenerate from any wound. I'm invincible!" With a scream of madness, Saya stabbed the toothpick into Tsukima-san's right eye.

I screamed.

I didn't care if it drew hybrids or the other contestants—I screamed with everything in my lungs. "I'm coming for you now, little one!" Saya laughed as she began to climb the stairs.

"Where do you think you're going?!" Tsukima‑san shouted. "You're not finished with me yet!"

Tsukima‑san hauled herself out of the water and grabbed the terrorist by the throat, dragging her up the steps. Saya struck her again and again with the tentacle, but Tsukima‑san didn't let go.

"Shiori‑chan! Run to the pillar!"

"But… I can't leave you!"

"Remember our promise! Remember your friends! Once I get rid of her, I'll meet you at the pillar! You go find your companions, I'll find my Gideon, and then we'll all get out of here—together! I promise!"

Ignoring the pain from the toothpick lodged in her eye, Tsukima‑san tightened her grip on Saya's neck. That was the last thing I saw before I turned and ran away, tears streaming down my face.

☆Alice

"Alice-chan! Wake up! Alice-chan!" I slowly opened my eyes. Harugaki was shaking me and looked at me with a worried expression.

"What time is it?" I asked, still sleepy.

"I don't know, but someone screamed—a girl," he replied. "Joshua heard it too and woke up."

"Don't tell me…" My heart stopped.

Joshua nodded. "It was Shiori-chan's voice."

I immediately stood up and grabbed my backpack. "Quick, where did the scream come from?"

"That way." Harugaki pointed in a direction; I'm terrible with directions, so I couldn't say exactly which one.

Then I heard gunshots.

Without waiting for Harugaki and Joshua, I ran towards the direction of the shots. I saw a staircase far away, but it was too distant to tell if anyone was down there—I could only see where the ground sloped down. The shooting didn't stop.

I passed an intersection and ran into something, falling to the ground. I tried to get up, but someone grabbed me by the shoulders and lifted me.

"Sorry, did you hurt yourself?" It was the brown-haired boy who was at the gathering with the very cute blonde girl.

I wanted to stop and punch him for making me fall, but I didn't have time for that. I shook his hand off and ran away.

"Wait! I'm not your enemy!" he shouted, but I was already running.

Those few seconds it took me to reach the railing of the stairs felt like years.

"Shioriiiiiiiiiii!" I screamed.

Below, in the water, was the girl who had looked at me with disdain at the gathering, the one with long hair. She was the same person my family had said was the terrorist when her photo appeared among the lottery winners. What made my eyes widen in terror was her left arm—or rather, what was in its place: a huge pink tentacle covered in suction cups. She was squeezing someone's neck underwater, drowning them; I could still see that person moving and struggling to break free. I jumped down. "Let them go right now!" "A new little lamb coming to throw herself into the wolf's jaws, huh?"

Before I even landed, she pulled out a gun with her right hand and aimed it at the head of the person she was drowning; she fired! Immediately, the victim stopped moving.

"Noooooooooooooo!"

I hit the terrorist in the face with all my strength, smashing her skull and throwing her across the surface of the water. I grabbed the lifeless body and lifted it—it wasn't Shiori‑chi! It was the girl who had smiled at me at the gathering. Her body was in terrible condition, covered in wounds, with a toothpick stuck in her eye and a bullet hole in her forehead.

Harugaki and Joshua caught up to me as I carried the girl's body up the stairs.

"She wasn't Shiori‑chan!" Harugaki said. "But I'm sure it was her voice."

"I heard it too, it was definitely her," Joshua agreed.

"If you're talking about the girl with the bow, she ran away when that little lamb told her he'd get rid of me and that they'd meet again at the pillar."

The voice came from the terrorist. She was back on her feet and her face showed no wounds.

I was furious. "With all the force I put into it, you should've been dead!"

"It's useless—while I'm in the water, all my wounds heal. I'm invincible!"

I lost sight of the tentacle, and that mistake cost me dearly. My ankle was grabbed, and I found myself dragged underwater, then back up again. The tentacle wrapped around my entire body, reaching my neck. I couldn't move, and the terrorist pressed the gun to my temple.

"She's your friend, right?" she said, addressing Joshua and Harugaki. "Come closer, get into the water, and leave your weapons on the stairs—or I'll blow her brains out."

"Don't do it!" I shouted. "She'll kill both of you—and me too! Go save Shiori-chi, leave me alone!"

"Quiet now," said the terrorist, stretching out her tentacle and covering my mouth.

"Alright, we'll do as you say, but let her go," Joshua said, dropping his rifle on the stairs and stepping into the water with his hands raised. Harugaki followed, throwing his knife onto the stairs.

"You're really idiots!" laughed the terrorist. "In this game, you can only win with your partner—what reason would I have to free her? Ahahah." She moved the gun from my temple and aimed it at Joshua's chest—but he jumped into the water. "You dare move? That means you don't care much about your friend."

Joshua stood silently, gritting his teeth. "In that case, she'll die first!"

The gun returned to my temple, but before she could shoot, a fireball struck the terrorist's face. The tentacle released me, and I immediately gasped for air.

"Who was that?"

The terrorist looked around; so did I. Joshua's power was Electric Shock, while Harugaki's was Bait. Who could have thrown that fireball?

"Up here, guys!"

It was the same brown-haired boy I had met earlier. He was smiling and waving, but a bullet zipped past his face. It almost killed him!

"What? She's still alive?" shouted the boy who had just saved me.

"As long as she stays in the water, she heals from any wound—there's no way to beat her!"

"Alice, this way!" shouted Joshua, grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the water. While the new boy bombarded the terrorist with fireballs, the three of us climbed the stairs, but Joshua turned toward our opponent.

"Ichinose Saya, heal from this!"

Electric shocks shot from Joshua's hand and struck the terrorist full force, stunning her. Saya screamed; the entire water shimmered with a blinding blue glow, and lightning bolts flashed in all directions. I had to cover my eyes with my hands.

When the electricity subsided, I saw the terrorist's charred body fall back into the water. This time she didn't regenerate—she remained still.

"We owe you our lives. If you hadn't come to save us, we'd all be dead," I said to the boy who had come to our rescue. "Don't mention it. Helping someone who's about to be killed just comes naturally to me."

Harugaki shook his hand in thanks, while Joshua simply said thank you.

"I'm Alice Tengokushi, nice to meet you." I gave my best smile to thank him again for saving us."I'm Harugaki Jin, and this is Joshua Blitz." "Nice to meet you all, my name's Yumeno Shu," he introduced himself with a slight bow.

"You're looking for a way out too?" Harugaki asked immediately.

"Exactly… but first, I have to find my little sister. I haven't seen her since I was locked in that capsule."

"I see. She was that cute blonde girl, right? I remember seeing you both at the gathering."

"Yes. I'm afraid to leave her here alone, at the mercy of hybrids or crazies like the one from before."

"We're also searching for our companion. Maybe you've seen her—she's a small girl with dark hair and a red bow on her head. You remember her, right?"

"Yes, I remember her—more or less. Unfortunately, aside from the hybrids, you're the first people I've met. I've been wandering around alone for so long I thought I was lost."

"According to what Saya said, it seems Shiori-chan managed to escape," Joshua cut in. "She mentioned she'd meet up at the pillar with the girl who was killed."

"Then we'd better get moving," said Harugaki. "Maybe we'll run into her along the way."

"If you want to reach the pillar, you'll need to take the train," said Yumeno.

"The train?"

"Just a bit further ahead, there's a huge lake full of water and crawling with hybrids. The only way across is by train. It passes once every hour, and after each trip, the bridge rotates ninety degrees. Then the train goes back and forth again. It takes four hours in total for it to return to the starting point."

"How do you know all that?" asked Joshua.

"I missed the train just half an hour ago and saw the bridge turning."

I could immediately tell Joshua didn't like the new guy—but I did!

"Shu-kun, would you like to come with us? I'm sure your little sister is heading for the pillar too. In this maze, it's the only landmark."

Shu blushed—probably because a girl he had just met called him by his name. A very cute girl, if I may say so! "O-okay, if it's all right with you, I'll join your group for a while."

I could practically see Joshua's jealousy—and I almost burst out laughing. For once, there was someone cooler than him!

☆Aeacus

My breathing was calm, though the mask amplified every sound. I was waiting for the right moment to strike my prey—an enormous hybrid snarling at me.

It lunged, and I acted. With my power, Warp, I can teleport anywhere I wish, though only within a limited range. I had no idea if I could teleport out of this place, but it didn't matter. My only duty was to find and protect the Queen. What kind of butler would abandon his Queen to think of his own pitiful life? Anyone who would do such a thing is unworthy of the title!

The hybrid swung at me, but I vanished between its claws. An instant later, I appeared behind it, pressed one of my twin pistols to the back of its head, and pulled the trigger. The beast collapsed to the ground, letting out a final, guttural cry.

"My behavior is truly reckless," I muttered.

Cursing myself for this useless waste of time, I teleported away, hoping to find the Queen once more.

﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾⫘﴿﴾

I reached the top of a fairly high wall and looked around in all directions until I spotted a green area. Someone was there, and that someone was watching me! I teleported away just in time, avoiding being hit in the head by a bullet.

"A sniper, huh?"

I disappeared again and stayed hidden. I could have attacked him directly in the green area, but I preferred to observe once more. I couldn't know if he was alone or with someone else.

I appeared behind him, hovering in midair for a moment, scanning the area, then vanished before he could turn around.

He was alone, but that didn't mean I could underestimate him. It was Kirisaki Juzo, the Prisoner. From what I knew about him, he had killed about ten people during a robbery before fleeing. Even when surrounded, he managed to kill five more agents before being captured and arrested. Now he was serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison, awaiting execution for his crimes. Obviously, things changed after his name was drawn in the lottery.

"To have been able to see me from so far away, you must possess the Sight, I suppose. Really a great combination with the sniper rifle. Unfortunately for you, I know you preferred to use a pistol before you were arrested; the fact that you got a precision rifle puts you at a disadvantage."Before I could teleport to strike, I saw a flock of crows fly over my head and head toward the Prisoner.

I abandoned my position and reappeared in front of the green area, behind a wall.

Kirisaki was trying to shoot at the crows, which were pecking him from all sides, tearing the flesh from his body. Finally, the birds merged into a human figure, armed with a katana, and cleanly decapitated him. His blond head rolled at my feet, while the person in front of me stared at me.

I kicked the head aside and approached, kneeling down.

"Finally I have found you, my Queen."

I felt the blade strike my mask, carving a deep groove—but not deep enough to pierce the metal and reach my face.

This was the Queen's pastime: to strike and inflict pain on every living thing before her. I was nothing but one of her toys. Beneath this mask there is no longer a human face but a monster's. Even the ugliest of those hybrids would have a better face than mine. The Queen had personally removed every scrap of skin from my face and forced me to wear this mask forever; to make sure I could never take it off, she had it sewn onto what remained of my flesh.

Still, I never once disobeyed. The master chose me to be butler to his precious daughter, and I would not step back.

"You're late, Aeacus."

"My sincerest apologies, Queen. I searched everywhere but could not find you."

"Perhaps, besides your face, I should have ripped out something else… maybe an eye? It would have sharpened what remained."

She didn't even look at me—she was busy wiping the blood from her katana on Kirisaki's corpse.

"This idiot's death was too quick. I need someone to play with. Those beasts don't satisfy me at all."

"I will make sure to find someone suitable for your games, my Queen," I answered promptly. I thought of all the contestants: the Queen's preferred victims were little girls. She loved their screams like the ones she heard in anime when they died. I suppose my screams do not please her as much.

Aside from me and her family, no one knew the Queen's true personality. On the outside, she was the sweet and gentle Ayase—but inside, a monster was waiting to be set free. There wasn't a single day she didn't torture or skin alive one of the countless animals her father gifted her.

But now, in this place, she could finally unleash her repressed desires. Her ideal prey? A young girl. She had dreamed for so long of tormenting a cute, innocent child—the sound of their screams would send her straight to paradise.

"Aeacus, if I don't get that little girl I saw at the gathering... then you'll once again be the subject of my little games!"
