The black cliffs of Thazir rose above the canyon as Zaira moved through the western passage. The late afternoon sun shone over the narrow roads, lighting up the iron watchtowers built along the cliffs.
The lookouts spotted the giant beast approaching and sounded a bronze horn. Its call echoed through the canyon, announcing the return of the Supreme Chief.
At the outer gate, guards pulled the heavy chains that held the iron portcullis in place. The gate rose slowly, allowing Zaira to enter the fortress.
People gathered along the stone terraces to watch her pass. Among them were families who had recently settled in Thazir from the Tatani clans. Many bowed as Sagiri rode past, while others whispered about the forty thousand southern warriors who had left for the northern border.
News sure does travel fast.
Sagiri jumped down from Zaira in the inner city.
"Wait for me, Zaira," he said, patting her snout.
