Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 Green Understands Me

Baron Green hesitated.

For the sake of developing his strength, Baron Green, who understood the plot, chose to temporarily join Queen Cersei's faction based on his own practical interests.

As expected, whether big or small, nothing in King's Landing ever happened without reason.

The hidden instigators behind the disruption of the King and Queen's relationship possessed considerable ambition; the chess players were already surging beneath the surface before the plot officially unfolded.

Those who could profit from such matters proved their own strength, true players in the game of power, or groups of players united by their respective ambitions.

Baron Green guessed the most likely families.

Baron Green deliberately showed an evasive look and instructed Mondon to plate him some stew.

Baron Green awkwardly avoided Ser Jaime's intense gaze.

Mondon placed chunks of meat on the plate and presented it to Baron Green as if it were a treasure.

Baron Green chewed the lamb, his eyes slightly lowered as he savored the tenderness of the stew, and the fatigue from working continuously for more than ten hours seemed to vanish instantly.

Ser Jaime could feel that Baron Green had noticed something and wanted to press further, but Baron Green was clearly avoiding him.

Seeing Baron Green eat with such relish, Ser Jaime became a little annoyed: "Little savage, are you eating alone? Aren't you going to entertain your guest?"

Baron Green seemed surprised, swallowed the food in his mouth, and said: "Do Lannisters also eat stewed lamb?"

Ser Jaime laughed in exasperation: "What did you think then? Do Lannisters eat gold?"

Baron Green looked up and smiled, instructing Mondon to quickly present food to Ser Jaime.

Upon receiving the food, Ser Jaime, abandoning his usual demeanor, took a large bite of the stew and chewed it.

Ser Jaime was a little surprised that the seemingly ordinary stew tasted better than he had imagined.

After eating for a while, Ser Jaime spoke: "Baron Green, it's clear I'm not sharp enough. If you've guessed anything, I hope you can be frank with me. I can even keep it a secret from Cersei; consider it a favor I owe you, Lannisters always pay their debts!"

Baron Green's ears twitched, as if he heard the crisp clinking of gold dragons.

Baron Green paused for a moment, his expression complex, and sighed slightly: "Warrior Mondon, take the meat, guard the surroundings, and don't let anything approach this place."

Anything? The clever Mondon immediately understood Baron Green's command, quickly packed a pile of meat, got up and left, calling out to the distant guards to set up the Warning range.

Baron Green moved his chair closer to Ser Jaime's position and sat down again: "Ser Jaime, I sense a black net cast over our Queen. It is already above Queen Cersei, but it is like something hidden in the dark night, undetectable, yet it is working."

Ser Jaime's pupils contracted; the mist he had never noticed before was broken by Baron Green.

Baron Green used many descriptions in his words, without specific targets, but Ser Jaime connected many things, including the increasingly fierce quarrels between Robert and Cersei.

Ser Jaime stared at Baron Green and asked: "Have you guessed who it is? What is their purpose?"

Baron Green did not avoid Ser Jaime's gaze: "Leaving aside who it is, the purpose is actually very easy to guess."

Baron Green paused, then continued: "To replace Queen Cersei."

Ser Jaime's body jolted, he sprang to his feet, the veins on the back of his hand bulging as he gripped his sword hilt, radiating killing intent.

Amidst his anger, Ser Jaime was conflicted; if Cersei was no longer Queen, could he take her away from King's Landing, back to Casterly Rock?

Baron Green saw the struggle on Ser Jaime's face after his anger, and secretly disdained the knight's naivety.

Baron Green could not directly warn him, pretending not to notice the change on Ser Jaime's face, and said: "Ser Jaime, only physical demise, or a massive stain on one's reputation, can legally bring about a new Queen."

Ser Jaime's anger immediately vanished, and his heart trembled violently.

Ser Jaime forced himself to sit back in his chair, and seeing that Baron Green's expression was only serious and he hadn't noticed his abnormality, he let go of his inner panic and breathed a sigh of relief.

Ser Jaime needed to speak to calm the frantic pounding of his heart from that moment: "Baron Green, your guess is very likely correct, especially this year I always feel that many things have become inexplicably awkward, and your analysis has helped me understand a lot."

As he spoke, Ser Jaime, due to Baron Green's keen intuition, actually felt a hint of apprehension, a result that amused Ser Jaime.

With a purpose he himself didn't quite understand, Ser Jaime suddenly said: "I have been too derelict; Cersei is in danger, yet I... I have failed her..."

Baron Green's heart stirred, but his expression remained calm; instead, he comforted him: "Although Queen Cersei is the Queen, to you, Queen Cersei is first and foremost your family."

"Because of your love for your family, you have always been inside the house, and the small changes outside are difficult to perceive. In contrast, someone like me, who is already outside, can more easily detect anomalies."

"Ser Jaime, Queen Cersei's most trusted person will always be you. Things have not yet developed to an unmanageable point. You hold a sharp blade, and a sharp sword can cut through the darkness."

Baron Green's voice was unhurried, still a bit youthful, but sufficiently steady, and carried a reassuring strength.

From Baron Green's gaze, Ser Jaime felt not only concern and trust but also a hint of reverence.

Ser Jaime represented the Kingsguard, the strongest knights in Westeros, and he was not surprised that Baron Green would revere him; on the contrary, his good impression of Baron Green increased significantly.

Ser Jaime had a prejudice against Baron Green even before meeting him, and later, after hearing Tyrion's advice, he ignored Tyrion's admiration for Baron Green, and his prejudice deepened instead.

He did not know that Tyrion's advice was unknown to him either; it was I who had the prejudice first.

Ser Jaime recalled Tyrion's words of praise for Baron Green.

As a Kingsguard, Ser Jaime felt ashamed in his heart because of his previous prejudice against Baron Green.

His heart was open; he actually understood me very well!
