Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Vastness of Magic

Everything about magic was fresh and fascinating to Sean, even magical history, which often drew complaints from first-year witches and wizards.

Sean was eager to explore the past of vampire hunters, to investigate the mistakes made by those wizards who specialized in hunting vampires, and to understand why Article 12 of The Non-Wizard Half-Blood Treatment Code deemed this profession illegal.

The intrigue of history captivated Sean, and his focus persisted until nightfall.

Sean lay flat on his four-poster bed, his mind tracing the story of Gifford Aldredon, the famous giant slayer who became a local hero for killing Hanges of Upper Barndon, and also one of the Chocolate Frog card figures.

In the fifteenth century, when Aldredon lived, giants were far more numerous than in Sean's time, necessitating people like Aldredon to limit their numbers and protect the wizarding world.

Werewolves, vampires, fairies, boggarts, trolls…

Sean's mind wandered through the epic tales of wizards, imagining them wielding wands, casting spells, embarking on grand adventures across this magical land.

His breathing gradually steadied. The Hogwarts breeze, like an invisible hand,

turned the pages of Magical History to the page filled with Sean's notes:

[Miranda was a witch who once studied at Hogwarts. She could not understand Hogwarts' outdated textbooks of the time. Being the youngest in her family, her older sisters loved to play tricks on her. Finding that no one would listen to her, the angry little witch invented the Bat-Bogey Hex. She once used the spell on her sisters and resolved to write an accurate, easy-to-understand book.]

[Batilda Bagshot's commentary: Magic always embraces the beliefs of the wizard. It is generous to those who meet its conditions; any wizard can create such miracles.]

Sean's notes had been scribbled and revised until only three powerful words remained:

Magic, Infinite Possibilities.

Sean had also imagined how he would cherish such a miraculous opportunity when magic manifested in this way.

Ultimately, his answer was—well, I have to master it completely.

Emerging once again from the library, the weekend had quietly slipped away.

Sean carried a large stack of books, the moonlight as beautiful as the night he had received his acceptance letter.

He could always understand why Hermione often carried so many books— because there was still so much to learn.

Yet his full time could only accommodate a small weekend, barely enough for a rough review of magical history.

As for brilliant astronomy, he only glimpsed a hidden corner of it within magical history.

Then there was Divination and prophecy.

As a result, he roughly read through all thirteen astronomy books, finally finding some clues in an old book that Madam Pince had entrusted to him with utmost seriousness.

[Wizards use astronomy to connect with the universe and themselves, drawing inspiration for magic. The magic they most desire to explore always ultimately returns to the vastness of the cosmos. Prophecy, fate, space, and time… all will eventually be immersed in the brilliant stars.]

Sean's passion radiated from within. He recited the words in the book, his thoughts burning like a fireplace:

In the Forbidden Forest, a centaur tribe hides, observing the stars to foresee the future;

Faraway Azkaban, Sirius clings to life in regret. His name, Sirius, also called "Canis majoris," corresponds to his Animagus form, while revealing his reliability and loyalty.

Sean held a quiet suspicion:

Magic's power does not exist solely in bursting spells, steaming cauldrons, or magical creatures…

It has endured for so long, even surpassing the history of wizards.

And astronomy is one of the deepest parts of magic, deep enough to connect with concepts like destiny.

In his bag, Sean carefully stored that old book.

During all available time, he shuttled almost exclusively between the practice room and the library, and this old book was the one he read most often.

The only regret was…

He couldn't fully understand the book; sometimes waiting for the centaur teacher to arrive for class felt like torture, and Sean even wondered if he could meet him in advance.

Professor Snape spent the entire weekend in the dungeons, leaving Sean unable to brew any potions.

But every loss came with a gain: his spell proficiency had reached a whole new level:

Levitation Charm: Beginner (21/900)

Lumos Charm: Beginner (19/900)

Cleaning Charm: Apprentice (297/300)

Next Stage: Three beginner-level Charms unlocked, granting access to the beginner-level title in the spell domain

Charm Talent: Green

Sean took his wand out of his bag. By now, his energy had mostly recovered.

With a little time left before curfew, he went to the hidden room's door.

The moment the owl portrait appeared, a noisy voice rang out:

"Little wizard! Clever little wizard! Answer my question!"

Sean waited quietly for the question. Although Justin had failed earlier, the owl portrait now turned a blind eye to their comings and goings, meaning Sean could enter even without answering correctly.

"By the tranquil riverbank walked the wise and beautiful Ravenclaw. Tell me, where does this lakeside exist?"

The pure white owl placed the parchment under its claws again, looking confidently at Sean.

"The Highlands of Scotland," Sean said calmly after a few seconds of recollection.

"How did you—"

The owl's tiny pince-nez glasses slid down slowly. Its flapping froze, and the sky-blue door gradually appeared.

"Thank you."

Before the owl portrait vanished, Sean whispered a quiet thanks.

Ravenclaw had likely left more than just her diadem.

In fact, the location of Hogwarts, its name, even the moving staircases—all were tied to this wise and beautiful woman.

Her wisdom and vision were woven into the castle, so the presence of this whimsical owl portrait didn't feel out of place to Sean.

"We heard you, Sean."

As soon as he entered the practice room, Justin and Hermione surrounded him, carrying magical lanterns.

Sean was a little surprised they had stayed up learning so late, and then noticed their expectant expressions.

"Alright, this is a story about the four founders…"

Sean's voice rang steadily.

Justin said, "Cool," then lit his wand and sat around Sean.

Hermione also lit her wand, sat up straight, and lowered her breathing in unison.

"Godric Gryffindor—people believe he was born over a thousand years ago in a wild region of western England, which was later named after him—Godric's Hollow. As for Helga Hufflepuff, the generally accepted explanation is that she came from the broad valleys of Wales, renowned for their culinary-related charms. As for Salazar Slytherin and Rowena Ravenclaw…"
