Stephanie's POV
Morning finally showed up, and I nearly shouted hallelujah.
All night I kept seeing Cane running after me in some dark hallway, yelling that I poisoned him.
Every time I opened my eyes I checked the door to make sure it was locked.
By six o'clock I gave up on sleep, jumped out of bed, and splashed cold water on my face like I was trying to wash the dream off.
I brushed my teeth so hard my gums hurt.
Then I tiptoed to the kids' room.
Josh was rolled up like a burrito in his blanket, only his hair sticking out.
Jolina was sleeping sideways, one foot hanging off the bed, mouth open, snoring like a tiny truck.
"Rise and shine, my little monsters!" I sang, pulling the curtains wide.
Josh made a sound like a dying walrus.
Jolina pulled the pillow over her head and mumbled, "Five more years."
I laughed and yanked the blankets off.
"Come on, school waits for no one."
They zombie-walked to the bathroom.
