EP.13 Taking My First Zombie Point
From early morning, Dohee was busy inspecting the bunker.
So the two of us just had a light breakfast of bacon and toast.
Afterward, Dohee kept checking the bunker.
I left her to it and got ready for battle to wipe out the zombies in the front yard of the bunker.
"It's time for the showdown."
With a determined heart,
I remembered confirming last night before bed just how much stat growth you get when leveling up from F to E.
I had about 20 points left to level up.
That's a relatively easy amount to get.
With the goal so close, I was determined to reach level E.
So, does that mean I'd open the gate and go out to beat up zombies?
Nope, I'm not going out.
There's no need.
Thanks to Dohee, I could now take out zombies without leaving.
She created a new variable last night.
"Let's kill zombies from here."
I went up to the 2.5th floor of the bunker.
The first floor is mainly living space.
The basement has various supplies and equipment.
There's some space above the first floor ceiling, and on top of that is the 2.5th floor.
If you open the small steel hatch on the 2.5th floor, you can see the front yard of the bunker.
This is where I'd take out the zombies.
The method:
"Come forth, Reverse Draw Compound Crossbow!"
I'd use the reverse draw compound crossbow.
In other words, I'd be killing zombies with a crossbow.
I'd never heard of awakening abilities appearing after the apocalypse broke out, so I had to prepare at least some defensive weapons.
I had a metal pipe, an axe, and a baseball bat.
I also had a stun gun and a gas gun.
Of course, what I needed most was a gun.
But even in my previous life's Korea, getting a gun was nearly impossible.
So I bought a few crossbows and stocked up on bolts.
"If I can kill them with a crossbow, there's no need to go outside."
That's why I didn't rush out to kill zombies on the first day.
I decided it was better to pick them off bit by bit from the second floor with a crossbow.
"If it had been yesterday afternoon, I would've had to snipe them one by one with the crossbow."
Killing zombies with a crossbow isn't easy.
That's why I said I'd pick them off little by little.
A crossbow's range is over 100 meters,
but accuracy drops sharply at around 50 meters.
Plus, even if the zombies are just shuffling, they're still moving targets.
It's not easy to hit them with a crossbow.
You need to fire a lot of bolts for a chance.
That's what the situation was like in front of the bunker before sunset on day one.
So instead of wiping them all out at once, I planned to gradually thin them out.
"Dohee did a great job luring them all the way to the front of the bunker."
But then a variable appeared.
"At this distance, it's more than enough."
While returning to the bunker, Dohee had drawn a large group of zombies right up to the main gate.
Grrrrrr...
Grrrrrrrr...
Grrk, grrk, grrrrr...
Shuffle... shuffle... shuffle...
The zombies were still milling around the armored vehicle.
They were about 10 meters away.
At 10 meters, I could hit a zombie's head accurately.
"How many are there? Seems like more than when Dohee came back?"
Dohee had brought about 12 zombies.
But now there were about 20.
Probably, zombies from behind the bunker were drawn by the sound of her car.
Dohee had drawn aggro perfectly.
Slide...
Once I'd assessed the situation, I loaded a bolt into the crossbow.
'Oh... looks like "General Weapon Skill Mastery" applies to crossbows too.'
As soon as I started using the crossbow, the "General Weapon Skill Mastery" trait kicked in.
I figured I'd feel it even more in real combat, and I was right.
I'd practiced with a crossbow before, but the feeling now was on another level.
Fwoooosh!
So, feeling the skill correction, I fired a bolt at a zombie.
Puaaaagh!!!
The bolt hit the zombie's head dead-on no, it went right through.
The moment I pulled the trigger, I felt a strong sense of a hit.
And then
Pop!!!!
I immediately ducked down.
'It's clear zombies have poor eyesight, but who knows if they're extra sensitive to movement...'
I'd confirmed yesterday that zombies have bad vision.
But it was only day two of the zombie apocalypse.
It was too soon to be sure about their traits, so I was being as cautious as possible.
"Bam bam bam! You have killed a zombie. You have acquired your first zombie point."
Suddenly, breaking the tense silence, a loud notification popped up.
Bam bam bam!!
"Still, getting a point for killing a zombie comes with a fanfare. Nice..."
My class is Special Hidden,
my job is Nano Warrior,
yet after killing one zombie, I ducked for cover like this.
It was a bit much for such a dramatic celebration.
Anyway, I received the status window's congratulations and got my first zombie point.
Slide...
Then I peeked out again to check on the zombies.
Grrrrrr...
Grrrrrrrr...
Shuffle... shuffle... shuffle...
Luckily, the zombies didn't react much.
They didn't seem to notice the bolt.
They also didn't seem to have the awareness to notice when another zombie fell.
Just like typical zombies,
they only react to loud noises or direct movement.
'Alright, let's keep going!'
Having confirmed their behavior, I gained confidence.
I loaded another bolt and boldly aimed at another zombie.
Fwoooosh!
No hesitation I fired again.
Puaaaagh!!!
Another headshot.
From then on, I just kept firing as soon as I reloaded.
Fwoooosh!
Fwoooosh!
I kept shooting.
Pwoosh!!
Three zombies.
Puaagh!!
Four.
Five.
Pow!!!
Six.
Puaaaagh!!!
Seven down.
'Hey, hey, hey... come out from behind the car!'
One shy zombie wouldn't come out from behind the armored vehicle.
I could have just shot another, but I got stubborn.
'That's it! Come on out!'
Fwoooosh!
Puaaaagh!
After waiting patiently for a few minutes, I got him.
That made eight zombies down.
Thud!!
Flop!!
Plop!
Thud!!
Corpses started piling up about 10 meters in front of the bunker.
'That's the fifteenth one!!!'
Fwoooosh!!!
Puaaaagh!!!
I ended up killing a total of 15 zombies.
'Okay, 15 points, exactly 15 zombies.'
I checked the status window: [Daily Zombie Max Allocation][F Level] 15/20.
It felt different from getting training points more like winning a war.
'Let's upgrade right away.'
Click! Click! Click!
Basking in victory, I pressed the [Agility], [Stamina], and [Endurance] buttons in the status window.
◈ Stats
[Power] E [5/5] [Agility] E [5/5]
[Endurance] E [5/5] [Stamina] E [5/5]
[Mana] F [0/5]100
'Ah~ feels solid... Ah~ so solid...!'
Except for mana, I maxed everything.
At least for physical abilities, I was already level E!
Slide...
I took out my smartphone.
[Dohee, are you busy right now?]
I texted Yeon Dohee, who was checking the bunker.
[Nope, not busy right now.]
She replied right away.
[Then come up to the 2.5th floor. Let's kill some zombies :)]
Out of 20 zombies, I'd killed 15 and left 5.
I wanted Dohee to kill some and see if she would awaken.
"I'm here."
A few minutes later, Dohee came up to the 2.5th floor.
"Oh, welcome."
I greeted her as she came up the stairs.
"So, you're killing them from here? With a crossbow?"
Dohee looked at the crossbow in my hand.
"Yeah. Honestly, until yesterday afternoon, it wasn't easy to kill them with a crossbow, but thanks to you luring the zombies right up here last night, it's possible now."
I leaned against the wall, looking outside like a sentry.
"Oh, they're still shuffling around the armored car?"
Dohee had rushed in without looking back, so she didn't know how many zombies had followed.
"Well, this'll be a piece of cake."
After hearing the situation, Dohee snatched the crossbow from my hand.
Slide!!!
She quickly loaded a bolt and aimed at a zombie without hesitation.
Fwoooosh!!!
She fired right away.
Puaaaaaaagh!!!!!
A perfect headshot.
Maybe it's only natural
after all, Dohee was the one who taught me how to shoot a crossbow.
"So, does this mean I'll awaken right away or what?"
Dohee was unfazed, blowing a zombie's head off with a crossbow in one shot.
After completing her mission so coolly, she looked at me and said,
"I don't know about others, but for me, I think I awakened about an hour after killing my first zombie."
"That's just how it was for me. Not sure if it'll be the same for you. We'll have to watch all day and see."
I scratched my head as I answered.
With no control group, I couldn't say anything definite about awakening timing.
"Then let's wait and see. If nothing happens by the end of the day, I guess it's not going to."
Dohee nodded slightly and handed the crossbow back to me.
Fwoooosh!!!... - Fwoooosh!!!
I took the crossbow and resumed cleaning up the remaining zombies.
'Wow... how many zombie points have I earned today?'
Zombie points kept piling up.
It was honestly sweet.
"Alright, good luck. I'll head down first."
Dohee walked toward the stairs.
"Yeah, I'll finish up and check things over before coming down."
Fwoooosh!!!
I answered her, still focused on killing zombies.
Suddenly!
I heard Dohee stop on the stairs.
"Taesik."
She called my name.
"Yeah?"
Fwoooosh!!!
As I finished off the last zombie, I responded.
"The one who killed a zombie, Yeon Dohee... It says you have defied the odds and become an Awakened?"
Dohee told me she had become an Awakened.
