Chapter 6 - Combat Rating

"..We'll be talking about your futures." Coming off as serious at first, everyone was feeling slightly uncomfortable.

"Yes. Although I know it might seem premature to talk about serious topics at this young age.."

"It's important to be informed!!!" His scream was almost deafening.

"Anyways. Does anyone know the system we use to determine somebody's strength generally?"

"Yes! You with the hand raised! What's your answer?" Hina, who had just undergone a crash course by Yukihime, stood up and tried her best to give an answer.

"Errrr, I think it was called category?"

"AHHHH, not quite! Although I recognize your efforts! You're halfway there actually!"

"That's 'our' way of designating the monster's strength."

Using his chalk he quickly wrote down the corresponding kanji that resembled the world's basis.

"The global way to measure is called 'Magnitude'."

"Generally these range from 1-10. The higher on the scale, the more dangerous the distortion is." Turning towards the chalkboard, the teacher finished writing half a word before he turned around again.

"Ahhh.. I probably forgot to teach you kids. Since you're all turning 11 this year, you all probably call them monsters."

"BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT!" Holding his chalk in front of his mouth similar to a singer, it felt as if he was imitating a commentator.

"The grown up words for such monsters are called distortions." Gone was his playful tone, instead his tone turned incredibly serious.

"Now you may wonder.. If distortions have a scale. Do humans likewise have the same as well?"

Looking around at each other whilst whispering for 10-20 seconds, the kids all reached the same consensus between themselves.

They had some idea that it did, but no clue what the correct definitions were. Except one particular individual of course.

Raising her hand with utmost confidence. It was reminiscent of sitting at the dinner table with her mom going over complicated terms and systems regarding the world.

"Teacher, our measurement is called combat rating instead, am I right?" Peering over, he raised a satisfied smile before responding.

"Correct!!! Excellent job as always Yukihime-chan."

"Thanks!" With a face resembling that of someone with great satisfaction she quietly began to sit down.

"Why don't you come up here and explain for the class how our variation works?"

"...eh?"

Her previous confident face quickly shifted into slight panic and embarrassment as she quickly realised the brightest lights had suddenly highlighted her. Without so much of a thought, she answered too quickly.

"..S-sure." Her voice began trembling.

"Excellent! I welcome you to the podium!"

Twisting the hair on her right side she made slow waddles to the front of the class. All whilst thinking about how she disliked the eyes of the moment.

Nonetheless she mustered up the remaining courage she had to give the best possible explanation in front of the class and teacher.

"Ahem!"

'You got this Yukihime! You're going to be the next great Stabilizer after all! This is nothing!' She repeatedly told herself.

"When gauging someone's combat rating we tend to use 8 variables."

"First, the foundation starts from your physical attributes. For example, Build, Strength, and Lung capacity all have varying degrees of influence on how you will be able to inhibit a mana valve."

"If you were to have a big frame with a lot of strength you would most likely resonate with a mana valve with the attributes Steel or Rock. Short and nimble would most likely yield wind or lightning, etcetera."

"Now, theoretically, let us say you ended up inhibiting a lightning attribute. Depending on how well you are able to channel and release the energy within your mana valves singularity, i.e where mana is stored and spread through your body, it will determine your effective output. Thereafter the coordination to be able to precisely aim and land a direct hit on the target would depend on your level of control."

The entire class sat silently engrossed in Yumi's lecture. Even the teacher was immensely impressed by her way of words. She almost appeared as if a seasoned veteran within one of the major cornerstones.

Without disturbing her or taking over cutting the explanation short, he let Yukihime continue.

"Additionally. Your output could take form in varying ways. For example being able to output your abilities on a wider area of effect, or on a concentrated zone. Therefore the power of the attack depends on how dense your energy is. You create this density by folding the energy in sheets. Higher density will yield an increased and formidable reaction."

"These 3 additional factors play a big role in evaluating somebody's combat rating."

"Pant, pant.." Suddenly feeling short on breath, she realised all of the regurgitated information was explained in one single breath.

Breathe in Yumi. Take one good look around and continue at your own pace. Everyone will be listening. Everyone should be listening, right?

'Those were the words my mom always told me whenever I felt like I was overbearing. Am I being overbearing right now?'

She took a long look around during her short rest between breaths.

'Everyone is listening. That makes me feel really good.'

Regaining her composure after a momentary pause, she continued forward.

"When you decide to channel and output an attack, your natural reserves of energy will decrease. Due to the toll the body usually takes in extended combative confrontations, your adrenaline will usually activate as a safety mechanism. This is to protect your body and hold your reserves stable. In spite of that fact, our body can naturally only tolerate a set amount before it endangers our life. Furthermore it is beneficial if you have a higher tolerance of handling adrenaline."

"In conclusion. The higher the better!"

"But how do we manifest this power? In modern day, the most common form would be chants and hand signs. Therefore the speed you'll manage to release an offensive or defensive ability is immensely important as it has a high likelihood of determining battles."

"Finally. One of, if not the most important factor that separates the best from the rest is.." Writing on the board she finally finished the 8th and last factor.

"Our intelligence!"

"Combining and going off these factors will determine your overall combat rating."
