Chapter 22 - Divide and Control

The lab is no longer pretending to be abandoned.

It's alive now.

Awake.

And it has chosen sides.

Side One — Brenner & Hopper

The door slams shut behind them.

Nancy whirls around, heart pounding.

Hopper stands between her and the man smiling in the doorway.

Dr. Martin Brenner steps fully into the light.

Perfect posture.

Hands folded calmly.

Like this is a parent-teacher conference.

"Chief Hopper," he says warmly. "Nancy."

Nancy's voice is steel.

"You've been poisoning children."

Brenner sighs softly.

"That is such an ugly way to phrase progress."

Hopper steps forward.

"You're done."

Brenner tilts his head.

"Am I?"

Nancy's hands shake—but her voice doesn't.

"Mr. Kelley is helping you."

Brenner's eyes flicker.

There.

A crack.

"A counselor," Brenner says gently, "is simply a man who listens."

Hopper growls:

"To grieving girls?"

Brenner's smile fades.

"For the vulnerable," he says quietly, "there are always doors."

Nancy feels sick.

"You targeted Chrissy."

Brenner doesn't answer.

But he doesn't deny it either.

Instead—

He presses a small remote in his hand.

Somewhere in the lab—

A lock engages.

Brenner's voice softens.

"You are not the only one who came tonight."

Hopper's stomach drops.

"You touch those kids—"

Brenner interrupts calmly:

"They are… variables."

Nancy steps forward, fury blazing.

"They are NOT variables."

For the first time—

Brenner's expression turns cold.

"You are naïve."

Side Two — The Trapped

Metal doors sealed.

Red emergency lights flashing.

The kids are cut off.

Steve slams his shoulder into the door.

It doesn't move.

"OPEN IT!"

Eddie's voice cracks:

"We're sitting ducks!"

Dustin's brain is already racing.

"There's got to be a manual override—these labs always have failsafes—"

Lucas grabs his arm.

"Then find it!"

Max scans the corridor.

"Guys…"

Her voice is small.

"They're herding us."

Will feels it too.

The lab isn't random.

It's guiding them.

Mike steps closer to him instinctively.

Their hands brush again.

Neither pulls away this time.

Steve notices.

Doesn't say anything.

Just nods once.

Focus.

Survive first.

Feelings later.

Jason — The Collision

In another wing—

Jason storms down the hall, separated from his jocks.

Breathing hard.

Sweat dripping.

"This is your fault," he mutters to the dark.

"You made me do this."

A door ahead creaks open.

Jason stiffens.

"Eddie?"

Silence.

Then—

A voice.

Calm.

Measured.

"You believe you are righteous."

Jason turns sharply.

A figure stands in the shadows.

Jason lifts his flashlight.

"Who the hell are you?"

The beam reveals a familiar, composed face.

Dr. Martin Brenner.

Jason blinks.

"…You're the school guy."

Brenner studies him like a specimen.

"You are very passionate."

Jason's jaw tightens.

"They're satanic. They killed her."

Brenner steps closer.

"No."

Jason freezes.

"…What?"

Brenner's voice is smooth silk.

"You were useful."

Jason's face twists.

"What are you talking about?"

Brenner's eyes harden.

"You gave the town a villain."

Jason's stomach drops.

"You—"

Brenner continues:

"Grief is powerful. It blinds."

Jason staggers back.

"You killed Chrissy?"

Brenner doesn't answer directly.

He only says:

"She was fragile."

Jason lunges—

But guards emerge from the shadows.

Jason is restrained.

He thrashes.

"You're a monster!"

Brenner's voice turns cold as winter.

"No."

A pause.

"I am efficient."

Jason screams as they drag him away.

For the first time—

He realizes he was never the hero.

He was the distraction.

Back to the Trapped — The Kiss Aftermath

The group reaches a junction room.

Dustin is prying open a panel.

Steve stands guard.

Lena stays close to him—but her eyes keep flicking toward the corridor.

Mike and Will stand slightly apart.

The air between them is different now.

Charged.

Will whispers:

"Are we going to talk about it?"

Mike's heart pounds.

"Probably not here."

Will nods.

"Right."

A beat.

Mike's voice softens.

"But I meant it."

Will's eyes shine.

"So did I."

Their shoulders brush.

And this time—

It isn't accidental.

The Escape Plan

Dustin shouts:

"Got it!"

The panel sparks.

Lights flicker.

A partial unlock.

"Not all doors," Dustin pants. "But enough!"

Steve nods.

"Move!"

They sprint down a corridor—

Only to find—

Armed guards at the far end.

Eddie curses loudly.

"Okay! That's new!"

Max grabs Lucas.

"Back!"

Steve pushes Lena behind him again.

"Stay down."

The guards advance.

Then—

A gunshot echoes from another wing.

Hopper.

The guards hesitate.

That's all the opening they need.

They run.

Hopper & Nancy — The Stand

Hopper lowers his smoking gun.

"Get away from him!"

Nancy grabs a metal tray and swings at another guard.

Chaos explodes.

Brenner watches from a distance.

Unbothered.

Nancy screams:

"HE'S USING THE LAB!"

Hopper shouts:

"I KNOW!"

Brenner turns calmly toward an exit.

"You are outmatched, Chief."

Hopper roars:

"RUN!"

Nancy sprints toward the corridor where the kids disappeared.

Brenner's voice echoes behind them:

"You cannot protect them forever."

Final Beat — The Reveal

The kids burst through a side exit—

Into cold night air.

They collapse onto the grass, gasping.

Steve scans the treeline.

"Where's Hopper?!"

Mike turns—

The lab windows glow faintly.

Red lights blinking.

Will whispers:

"He's still in there."

Behind them—

Police sirens begin wailing in the distance.

Someone tipped them off.

But who?

And inside the lab—

Dr. Martin Brenner stands alone in the hallway.

Calm.

Collected.

Untouched.

He speaks quietly to someone just out of view.

"Prepare the next phase."

A shadow shifts beside him.

Not Mr. Kelley.

Not Jason.

Someone else.

Still unseen.

And this time—

They smile.
