Davina's POV
"What's happening?" Calista questioned, her eyebrows knitting together as she entered the living room.
"We're getting out of here." My response came out sharp and hurried while I darted around the room, gathering Cooper's scattered toys from the floor.
"What do you mean?" Calista pressed again, studying me with a blend of bewilderment and wariness.
I stopped dead for a heartbeat, then whipped around to face Calista. My thoughts were all over the place right now.
Every noise, every shift in movement seemed dangerous.
I managed a trembling smile, bending down to murmur to Cooper who was hunched on the rug with his toy car. "Sweetheart, could you head to your room for me?"
Cooper gazed up at me, his pure face brightening with joy. "Sure, Mama." He bounced cheerfully toward the bedroom, then paused.
"Mama, can I play pocho?"
Absolutely not. I wanted to yell...
But I nodded instead. I couldn't refuse without explaining why...
Cooper dashed toward our room.
