Davina's POV
If I bolted right now—just spun around and made a run for the door—it would either scream guilt or prove exactly what Irvin's mother had just accused me of.
If I came clean... they could rip Cooper away from me.
My thoughts were spinning so wildly I couldn't catch one before the next slammed into me.
This wasn't how I'd planned to tell Irvin about Cooper. Not ever like this...
It was supposed to happen on my timeline. When I was prepared.
When Cooper was prepared. When I could guarantee no threats, no surprise attorneys showing up, no custody wars that would destroy my son.
Not like this.
Not because of some trap disguised as small talk in a company where I had no right to be...
My gut clenched.
My only choice left was to lie.
My knees nearly buckled as I slowly faced Louise Jenkin again.
My heart wasn't just racing anymore—it was hammering against my ribs so violently I thought it might explode through my chest.
My mouth felt like cotton.
