"I watched you die."
My voice broke, barely a whisper, and I clenched my eyes shut like I was preparing for everything to crumble around me.
I held my breath. Expecting harsh laughter. Expecting cold rejection. Expecting Louise to summon security, to have me hauled from her office like some unhinged woman who'd finally snapped.
Nothing happened.
Instead, silence engulfed me, thick and suffocating until I felt like I was drowning in it.
Cautiously, I forced my eyes open.
My stare locked with Louise Jenkin's.
My chest constricted.
Louise wasn't laughing. Not even a trace of mockery crossed her features.
She wasn't shouting for someone to remove me. She simply watched me, her expression unreadable. Not furious. Not irritated. Not entertained.
Just empty.
Somehow that felt infinitely worse.
I swallowed against the desert in my throat, my pulse still thundering in my skull.
