Davina's POV
Chase had taken Cooper to the next room, working to soothe him down.
Thank God the little one had finally drifted off, his tiny breaths evening out after that heartbreaking flood of tears.
I sat by myself in the stillness, my body folding inward like I could somehow disappear entirely. I hugged my knees tight, burying my face against them, and this time I didn't fight the tears that came.
They poured out hot and relentless, trailing down my face, soaking through my top.
I felt awful—completely awful—about how I'd handled everything.
The second I'd seen Cooper's little face, all blotchy from sobbing, every instinct screamed at me to scoop him up, to cradle him, to be that safe harbor he always counted on. But I couldn't.
I'd gone rigid. Couldn't budge, couldn't find words, couldn't even draw air. My thoughts had been yanked somewhere else—back to a moment and a person I'd convinced myself were buried too deep to ever surface again.
