Aethelgard had been renamed the Citadel of Darkdawn. The former seat of the Light was now decorated with obsidian banners, and the stench of incense had been replaced by the cold essence of Shadow.
Kaito, as Vice-Commander of Ash, had his quarters in the Great Library, his war prize. He had spent the weeks following the conquest in a grueling cycle of consolidation: overseeing the re-education of the Light's leaders, assisting Elora in her experiments with the Replication Core, and enduring Zylpha's discipline in the Forge, which was now a public demonstration of her power.
Kaito's life had become a constant transaction of power, and the pressure of his own Ash Harem was immense.
The Queen's Challenge
One night, the Queen of Ash summoned him to the Great Hall, which now served as an audience chamber. She sat on the throne, her expression one of proud possession.
"Kaito. You have proven yourself my most effective weapon," the Queen said. "But the Shadow does not allow stagnation. Power must flow or it rots."
"My power continues to grow, My Queen. The Replication Core is almost ready," Kaito replied.
"Your power must be publicly tested. You are the Vice-Commander. The chaos outside is a breeding ground for resistance."
The Queen presented him with a report from Lysandra, who was working in the Middle Lands, planting disinformation agents.
"There is an ancient dragon temple, the Obsidian Nest, in the Northern Mountains. The place radiates raw magical power that the Light tried to seal." If we secure that place, your power will be magnified, and we'll have access to a new power source for the Replication Core.
The mission was risky, on the border of the former No Man's Lands.
"Go to the Obsidian Nest. Secure the power source. And bring me proof that that place now belongs to you, Kaito. Demonstrate your authority beyond the Citadel."
The Charge in the Library
Before leaving, Kaito headed to his domain. Ren's presence in the rune chamber was a constant reminder of the price of his crown.
Lysandra was waiting for him there. She had been working in the Library, using her knowledge to catalog Ren's strained mind.
"The Paladin is still a perfect living archive," Lysandra said, her voice low and professional. "But the trauma of the last psychic battle has made him unstable." He's begun creating "false doors" in his mind, shielding subconscious information.
"What information?" Kaito asked.
"I don't know. Your brother's mind is trying to protect his last secret. It could be the key to the resurrection of the Light, or simply a worthless memory. But we can't take any chances."
Lysandra approached Kaito, her touch a demand for cooperation.
"When you go to the Obsidian Nest, you must carry the Lasso with you to the limit. I need you, with your power at its peak, to break those false doors and extract the information, or the Paladin will be rendered useless. I can't do it from here."
Kaito understood the move: Lysandra was forcing him into a new act of intimate cruelty to ensure the stability of his greatest resource.
"I will do whatever is necessary to secure the source and stability of my weapon," Kaito affirmed.
Zylpha's Demand
Just before his departure, Zylpha intercepted Kaito in the courtyard. Her face wore an expression of professional dissatisfaction.
"The Vice-Commander is too comfortable in his library. Conquering a new domain requires strength."
Zylpha tossed a package at Kaito's feet. It contained an array of combat runes and forging tools, designed to withstand the heat and raw energy of the Obsidian Nest.
"These tools are not gifts. They are a contract. Prove to me that you can master the raw strength of the Nest. Discipline is the only language the Shadow respects. If you bring the Nest under your control with the strength of the Shadow, my support will be unwavering."
Kaito donned his armor and felt the heavy responsibility. The Shadow Crown was a weight that required the constant satisfaction of his Harem's demands. His mission was twofold: to secure a new source of power and to complete the final destruction of his brother's mind.
Kaito, the Vice-Commander, crossed the portal to the North. The final challenge lay not in the Light, but in the ambition of his own circle.
