Chapter 16 - Dai's Grievance

Suppressing the urge to kill, Quynh cursed him out in her head before asking patiently: "What else? You're supposed to be a man, so why do you talk like a woman, leaving your sentences half-finished?"

Regarding the matter of Thi Hoa, Dai had hesitated because he didn't know if he should say it or not.

Now, being called a woman by Quynh, Dai was immediately displeased.

"Wife, how am I a woman? Last night you knew I wasn't a woman. If you're not clear, I can prove it to you again later."

At the mention of last night, Quynh wanted to commit murder. Her eyes widened, bigger than lanterns.

"Dai, if you dare mention the bad thing you did last night again, I'll kill you!"

Who was mentioning it on purpose?

Wasn't it his wife who said he wasn't a man?

Dai felt very wronged, but he didn't dare bring it up again.

"I was saying, last year the widow Dien said that if I wanted to marry her widowed daughter, I would have to build a house better than my younger brother's, and also have a bride price of thirty quan..."

"What?" Quynh's voice shot up an octave: "A widow is putting on such airs? The nerve!"

Marrying a wife for this brute would cost at least sixty quan? This time, the people Quynh wanted to kill included not only this brute but also that widowed mother and daughter!

Their family was already widowed, yet they dared to act so high and mighty, how shameless!

He was a strong man, with capable hands and feet, a man of ability, and some widow was looking down on him?

Damn that widow! If you had just snatched him up, I wouldn't be in this situation today!

This won't do!

Isn't it just sixty quan? With this brilliant mind of mine, could it be that I can't earn sixty quan?

"What's that horny widow's name?"

The moment Quynh's crude words left her mouth, even someone as thick-skinned as Dai had to blush.

He had never seen *that* on anyone, not even his little wife's last night, because he had been in a hurry and hadn't gotten a good look.

To prove his innocence, Dai replied honestly and with a sense of being wronged:

"Her name is Hoa, and her mother is the widow Dien. She grew up in the village and came back after her husband died. I've never seen *that* of hers..."

Uh...

Hearing the last sentence, Quynh finally blushed with embarrassment. Had she corrupted a good young man?

To find a suitable match for Dai and lay the groundwork for her own departure, Quynh wiped her face and continued asking, "Do you like her?"

Dai again shook his head honestly: "Don't know. Never thought about it."

Never thought about it didn't mean he didn't like her. Immediately, Quynh felt a glimmer of hope: "Then I'll help you marry her, alright?"

She would marry Thi Hoa for him?

He had once considered marrying her. After all, for a man like him who had to support his younger siblings, it wasn't easy to marry a wife he truly loved.

But ever since the widow Dien had looked at him with contempt, saying that a poor man like him wanting to marry her beautiful-as-a-flower daughter was like a mangy toad wanting to eat swan meat, Dai had sworn that he would rather stay single his entire life than marry Thi Hoa!

The old hunter he had saved in the mountains years ago had said: it's better to die with honor than to live in shame. He, Dai, could not lack such integrity!

When Quynh mentioned having him marry Thi Hoa, Dai's expression immediately turned unhappy, and he answered very decisively, "No need!"

Quynh was furious: "Why not? Didn't you want to marry her before?"

Not wanting his little wife to know how that mother and daughter had humiliated him, lest she also look down on him, Dai answered honestly: "Back then, you hadn't arrived yet."
