Chapter 97 - Not a Reversal, but an Interruption

"There is no invincible magic in this world. This Gold Transformation can definitely be broken."

Fíliya said with great confidence, then looked at Aura again.

"Aura, it's time for a pop quiz. Tell me, what is the further deduction humans made based on the 'Principle of Irreversibility' left behind by the Great Mage Flamme?"

"Ah?! Wait! Let me think."

Called upon, Aura was taken aback once more, thinking to herself how this girl always called on her so suddenly, without any warning to let her prepare.

Watching Aura think so hard, Fíliya was in no hurry.

She simply sat down on a particularly conspicuous golden rock nearby.

After a while, Aura finally recalled the human knowledge that Fíliya and Solitär had drilled into her.

"I remember now!"

Aura shouted excitedly, then continued.

"It's that one, right... uhm... 'The effects of magic are irreversible, they can only be overwritten,' right? To be honest, I never really understood what that means, I just memorized it."

Aura's candid attitude made Fíliya and Solitär exchange a glance.

Then Fíliya smiled.

"Oh? You've actually become honest. Before, you would've definitely put on a tough act and said something like, 'Of course I know, how could I not understand?'"

"Uh... No way! I'm very serious when it comes to magic, I never act tough."

Aura puffed her cheeks and glared at Fíliya.

"Alright, we'll go with that."

Fíliya shrugged nonchalantly and continued.

"Aura, think about it. Suppose I have a white bread, then I use magic to turn it into black bread, and finally use magic to turn it back into white bread. Is this new white bread the same as the original one?"

Listening to Fíliya, Aura slowly fell into thought, only answering after a minute had passed.

"No... it's not?"

"Correct. In this process, the bread underwent two changes. The final white bread wasn't 'restored' to the original white bread, but rather 'overwritten' by a brand new white bread. This is what the theory aims to explain... 'The effects of magic are irreversible, they can only be overwritten.'"

"Hmm, but doesn't this theory just further prove that the 'Gold Transformation' is fundamentally unsolvable? After all, a person is turned into gold, and trying to create a person from gold... trying to overwrite this Gold Transformation... the difficulty is far greater than turning a person into gold. 'This is something beyond the reach of human imagination.'"

Aura said with a serious expression.

Only when discussing magic did this girl act even slightly proper.

"Yes, that's more or less the idea. But to think that 'creating a human from gold' is absolutely unimaginable is to underestimate human imagination. Even the 'Principle of Irreversibility' itself isn't absolute, so how could a further deduction made from this 'Principle of Irreversibility' be absolute? I believe there must be someone in this world who can do it."

Fíliya's tone grew calm.

As she finished speaking, she couldn't help but recall the time she discussed the 'Principle of Irreversibility' with Flamme herself.

Flamme's expression back then was quite interesting.

She had mused for a long time before smiling and saying something like, 'The theories of predecessors are meant to be overturned by their successors.'

"Uhm..."

Aura frowned slightly, looking at Fíliya's confident expression, then carefully ventured a question.

"So... you already have a clue? Don't... don't be so scary, you don't actually know how to undo this Gold Transformation, do you?"

Aura's shocked (ΩΔΩ) expression made Fíliya chuckle, and she subconsciously reached out and pinched the soft flesh of Aura's cheek.

It took a few pinches before Aura seemed to realize what was happening, quickly covering her face and pulling away.

"What... what is with this girl? I'm trying to have a serious conversation with you, and all you do is pull these kinds of boring sneak attacks..."

Aura pouted, her cheeks puffed.

"Mmm, as for me, I would choose a different approach to solve the problem."

After enjoying Aura's delicious expression, Fíliya said with a satisfied look.

"Huh? What other approach."

"You're so slow, Aura. Didn't I just say it? In my eyes, this glittering golden world hasn't been turned to gold, but is in a state of 'time stasis.' Therefore... I just need to interrupt this state."

As Fíliya spoke, she floated into the air, much to Aura's shock.

At a height of four or five meters, she reached out to touch a fruit... on an apple tree.

The three demons were captivated by Fíliya's movement.

Then, they saw the glittering golden fruit was held in Fíliya's hand, and its golden-like skin began to dissolve at a very rapid pace, revealing the greenish-red color beneath.

Fíliya plucked the apple and slowly descended to the ground.

"See, just like this."

Fíliya showed it off confidently.

"..."

Solitär's eyes widened, while Aura was practically incoherent.

"Th-th... you can actually do it! Isn't this reversing the Gold Transformation?!"

Aura shouted, to which Fíliya simply gave her a light knock on the head with her fist.

"Didn't I tell you? It's 'interrupting' the effect... Although it looks like the apple was returned to its original state, the principle is completely different. And besides... this is all I can manage for now."

Fíliya said with a hint of resignation.

This reaction struck both Solitär and Aura as odd.

Fíliya had just accomplished an unprecedented feat, yet she seemed dissatisfied.

Seeing their confusion, Fíliya explained.

"I feel like something is still missing. See, it's interrupted, but not completely interrupted."

As Fíliya spoke, she casually tossed the apple into the air.

Once again, their gazes were drawn to the apple thrown into the distance.

They watched as the apple, upon leaving Fíliya's hand, was quickly assailed by the golden shell once more, which covered it completely again.

With a 'Clang!', the apple hit the ground, making a sound like colliding metal.

Only then did Aura realize that this girl could only interrupt the effect of the 'Gold Transformation' while holding the apple in her hand.

"'Phew... That scared me. Thank goodness.' Aura subconsciously patted her chest, thinking with lingering fear... She had thought Fíliya had become a monster who could completely break the 'Gold Transformation Magic' just by looking at it."

"Even if your power has been growing at an abnormal speed lately, there's no way you could do something that outrageous..."

Aura was relieved that her pride as a Greater Demon had not been so easily crushed by Fíliya.
