Years had passed since Hikaru was first taken under Yuki's care. With Yuki, Hikaru no longer had to worry about where she would sleep or what she would eat. Even so, after she grew into adulthood, Hikaru understood that she had never truly become part of the family.

From the very beginning, Yuki had made her position unmistakably clear. Hikaru was not an adopted child, nor someone Yuki brought home to love as family. She was an object Yuki brought into her house, something that existed entirely under her control.
And Hikaru accepted that, consciously.
