Another day dawned. Li Haojun lay on his side beside Qin Wenjing, caressing her cheek and her hair. The hazy morning light filtered through the curtains, slipping through the gaps between her strands to illuminate her face.
"Last night I had a dream," Li Haojun said softly.
"What? Tell me," Qin Wenjing loved it when Li Haojun shared things with her—anything at all.
I dreamt of a street at night, with a light drizzle falling. The lights from the large glass shop windows illuminated the sidewalk and the passersby. The rain dampened the paving stones and blurred the view. The dim yellow glow from distant streetlights barely illuminated the small areas around them. Few people were on the street, and sparse neon signs dotted the only signs of bustle.
"Are you alone?" Tan Wenjing asked.
"It seems like it was a commercial street, but most of the buildings on either side were single-story, with only a few two- or three-story ones. I'm not sure if I've actually been there before—I can't quite remember," Li Haojun chuckled self-deprecatingly.
"We used to go out shopping at night less often, mainly for safety reasons. You don't like taking risks, and you certainly don't like taking me along on them." Qin Wenjing said.
"What about you?" Li Haojun asked. "What's your risk tolerance?"
I don't like it either. Maybe it's because of you.
"Do you ever get tired of this routine, mundane life day after day?" Li Haojun added.
Qin Wenjing smiled warmly and said, "It's okay. As long as you're here, that's all that matters."
Li Haojun smiled at her and asked no more. He too was contemplating the balance between risk and reward, quantity and quality in life's experiences. Of course, such uneventful days weren't necessarily devoid of substance—they simply lacked the unexpected twists, the ripples of change, and the fresh thrill of the unknown.
Throughout his upbringing and life experiences, Li Haojun avoided taking risks, often anticipating potential dangers and steering clear of them altogether. Clearly, one cannot rely solely on luck to navigate life. While this approach yielded relatively stable and predictable outcomes, it also deprived him of certain other life experiences.
Li Haojun had also been pondering whether the time spent at the solar farm was truly necessary or worthwhile. Was he being overly neurotic by sacrificing present moments with her to avoid the potential risk of an uncertain future that might not even lead to separation? Certainly, some plan for the long term, preparing for the future, while others live openly in the present. Perhaps it's simply a matter of different lifestyles or philosophies, but one cannot deny the existence of a causal relationship, whether strong or weak.
As usual, after spending most of the day wrapping up work, Tan Wenjing finally had some free time. Li Haojun asked, "I saw some netizens sharing how lively the riverside in Richland gets at night. Want me to take you there?"
Qin Wenjing listened to him say this, her eyes widening in surprise, for this was not in keeping with Li Haojun's usual style.
"Really?" Tan Wenjing asked again, then paused to think before adding, "What should I wear?"
"It might get a bit chilly tonight. Wear some thicker pants and a windbreaker—that should be fine. Don't wear high heels; they'll tire you out walking," Li Haojun suggested. After a while, Qin Wenjing emerged from the inner room, dressed and ready, still sporting high heels. Women, huh.
Driving south along the ordinary highway, wetlands and grasslands stretched out along the way, with flocks of birds freely soaring overhead. This time, Tan Wenjing sat in the passenger seat. She wore a loosely braided plait draped over her left shoulder, falling to her chest. Her bangs were blown by the open window's breeze as she admired the natural scenery. The afternoon backlight bathed the grasslands in golden hues. This was an unfamiliar road, one she had never traveled before. No one knew what kind of scenery lay beyond the next bend.
Small towns, distant mountain peaks, grasslands, and forests on the hillsides—such natural scenery kept shifting by. Gradually, the sky grew dark. The lights of traffic on the highway and the roadside lighting created another kind of scenery along the way. Light and shadow flashed rapidly through the windshield inside the car, making the journey feel like a dream.
Li Haojun spoke little along the way, and so did Qin Wenjing. She didn't want to distract him from driving safely, so the two simply enjoyed the journey together in silent harmony.
As night fell, the car entered Richland. Along the Columbia River, strolling along the riverside promenade, the dim waters reflected the colors of the night sky and the lights on the shore, transforming the still hues into flowing shadows.
Li Haojun wrapped his arm around Qin Wenjing's waist as they strolled along the riverbank. The streetlights illuminated her bangs and cheeks, creating a striking contrast against the cool-toned night sky and river below, while the warm glow of the riverside lights in between seemed to stage a fairy tale where the princess and prince's love finally came together.
Li Haojun gazed at Qin Wenjing, who was smiling warmly back at him. He recalled his opening line:
"Do you miss Van Gogh?"
Qin Wenjing paused for a moment, then exclaimed excitedly, "Oh, right! That painting of his—the one by the river, with the starry sky!"
Tan Wenjing grabbed his arms and shook them as she spoke, "That painting—are we inside it?"
"Yes, but we don't have to be as sorrowful as he is," Li Haojun said with a smile.
Further ahead, the lights grew brighter and the road widened into a small, bustling square. Local residents strolled about, musicians performed, but the main attraction was the array of food stalls offering sustenance to the lively crowd.
"We haven't had dinner yet. Would you like to grab something to eat here?" Li Haojun asked her.
"Sure, whatever you say," Qin Wenjing looked genuinely happy. She was always like that—never picky with Li Haojun. It was unclear whether it was because she loved him that she wasn't picky, or whether it was precisely because she wasn't picky that she could love someone.
Head toward the crowd—there's a row of food stalls. The first one serves grilled seafood, but you can't fill up on that alone. Better to start with an appetizer. Each of us got one portion, carried them over to the benches at the edge of the square, and sat down to savor them slowly. We had all the time in the world.
"What do you think?" Li Haojun asked, though he didn't really care about the answer—the question was merely for the sake of conversation. He'd always been wary of outside food, so he'd deliberately chosen something well-cooked. To avoid dampening the mood, he said nothing more.
"It's quite good, very tasty." Tan Wenjing didn't overthink it—whether choosing a path or selecting food, she simply savored the moment's delights and companionship with Li Haojun. Or perhaps it was trust: following her beloved, she surrendered everything to him.
Next came the grilled steak. The two shared a single portion, returning to the bench to face each other across the plate. In the square, a musician played classical guitar—an impromptu performance whose melody was gentle and unassuming, the plucked strings clear and resonant.
Sharing the steak meant they were constantly facing each other, gazing at one another as they tore and chewed. Their eyes met and communicated, smiles appearing and flowing. Soft lighting illuminated Tan Wenjing's cheek, while the quiet night sky framed Li Haojun's face. Enveloped by the gentle evening breeze, it felt as though only their world existed.
Was this fate's own program? Having finished their steaks, the pair decided to indulge in some starchy fare. Each grabbed a freshly grilled hot dog, its meat patty topped with onions and butter, and sat shoulder to shoulder to dig in. Meanwhile, another bayan accordionist arrived, launching straight into Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The accordion's timbre tore through the riverside night like an evening breeze, carrying the classical melody from centuries past to resonate with the souls of those present. Li Haojun held his hot dog in one hand while wrapping his arm around Qin Wenjing's waist. As they ate and listened, they occasionally exchanged smiles. In that moment, everything humanity could desire seemed utterly fulfilled—it was paradise.
After filling their bellies, Li Haojun took Qin Wenjing by the hand and strolled around the edge of the small square. Away from the hubbub at the square's center, they savored their private world, content in the sparse lights across the river and the tranquil ripples on the water's surface. As night deepened, they had no desire to return home. The evening breeze grew cooler, yet it couldn't dampen the warmth in their hearts. He tightened the belt of Tan Wenjing's trench coat, drew her close, and held her tightly, prolonging this sweet moment.
Over by the center of the square, another violinist had appeared at some point. Together with the accordion and guitar, the collision of these three instruments created Piazzolla's "Libertango." The atmosphere at the square's center had reached its peak. To the music, people cheered and danced. Over here, Tan Wenjing was also swept up by the mood. Holding Li Haojun by one hand, she swayed gently, moving her body to the rhythm of the music.
Seeing Li Haojun still so composed, she couldn't help asking, "Do you remember if you can dance? Tango."
"I don't remember. Did I ever know how?" Li Haojun felt a pang of shame, unable to fully enjoy the moment with her.
Qin Wenjing asked for nothing more, simply holding Li Haojun's hand as they danced slowly—sometimes drawing closer, sometimes drifting apart, sometimes spinning on her own, sometimes circling around Li Haojun.
At the center of the square, as one song ended, the crowd remained unsatisfied. Next came "Just a Step Away." The violin's melodious strains stirred the hearts of all present.
Following Tan Wenjing's movements and steps, Li Haojun began to move to the rhythm of the music. Though his mind had forgotten the past, his actions were simply in sync with her present.
"Can I learn from you now? I might make mistakes," Li Haojun murmured softly as he followed Tan Wenjing's movements.
There are no mistakes in tango. If you make one, just keep going.
Whether in dance or in life's daily actions, the seamless harmony between partners always deepens the bond between two lovers. Holding Qin Wenjing's waist, intertwining their hands, moving and spinning in perfect unison—the world around them faded away. Only each other remained at the center of their universe. Who cared if a step went wrong or if someone saw them? All that mattered to Li Haojun was being with the person he cherished, making her happy.
In the dance, Qin Wenjing takes the initiative, revolving around Li Haojun as her focal point. This devotion extends beyond the dance—in real life, she remains equally attached to him. Even in high heels, she moves swiftly to the music's rhythm, weaving intricate patterns with her calves and undulating her body, constantly expressing her deep affection for Li Haojun.
Li Haojun's relative stability also reflects his mature, steady, and dependable nature in their relationship. Whether Tan Wenjing distances herself or draws near, he remains a constant presence, serving as her anchor. In the dance, he similarly embraces her waist with strength and holds her hand firmly when needed—a gesture that speaks volumes about his reliability.
At the climax of the music, the violin's plaintive, wailing melody seemed to voice Tan Wenjing's inner confession. She leaned forward, her bow in hand, clinging to Li Haojun's chest, tilting her head back to gaze at him with deep affection.
Li Haojun understood her heart. He walked with resolute steps, his strong arms pulling her to follow. It felt like an unwavering promise—a lifelong vow to stand by her through any storm, a declaration of love that transcended the carbon-based life cycle, a pledge made to the eternal cosmos.
The music ended, but the crowd lingered. Li Haojun gazed at her face before him, her breath coming in slightly hurried gasps, and felt an overwhelming tenderness toward her.
Gently lifting Tan Wenjing, their eyes met. Li Haojun remained silent—his love was always shown, never spoken.
Once Tan Wenjing had calmed her breathing, she could no longer hold back. "I love you," she blurted out. Li Haojun immediately pulled her tightly into his arms...
Standing tall, oblivious to his surroundings, he remained motionless for an unknown duration. As red and blue emergency lights flashed, a police drone hovered over the square, broadcasting announcements in English, Chinese, and Spanish, demanding the crowd evacuate. A large protest group was rapidly approaching, and acts of rioting and vandalism were occurring within the demonstrators.
In their embrace, neither could bear to let the moment end. Only after the drone circled the square once and returned overhead did Li Haojun release his arms. He glanced at the drone, then took Qin Wenjing's hand and prepared to leave.
As the square activities subsided, glancing back toward the direction the police drone had come from, there were indeed flashes of fire and the clamor of noise. Li Haojun tugged at Qin Wenjing's hand and smiled as he said to her,
We need to pick up the pace.
Qin Wenjing said nothing either, smiling as she took Li Haojun's hand and began running in her high heels. The wind whistled past her ears, the hem of her trench coat fluttering wildly, while the heels beneath her feet made crisp, sharp sounds in the dark night.
Back in the car, they drove out of Richland and onto the main road as night deepened. Li Haojun didn't want to drive at night, so he found a flat stretch of road, pulled off the main highway, and parked in the woods by the roadside. He got out to survey the surroundings, set up some alarms, and returned to the vehicle.
Recline the seat, gaze up at the stars through the windshield, take Qin Wenjing's hand, and whisper softly,
"Let's stay the night here. Driving at night isn't safe, and besides, tonight's starry sky is a rare sight."
"Alright, I'll take your word for it." Qin Wenjing turned her head to look at Li Haojun and said.
Yet what is truly rare is not just tonight's starry sky, but also the beautiful experiences and memories added to life today.
As the stars shifted in the night sky, beneath the embrace of nature, within the small car nestled in the woods, two souls mirroring each other's heart slept soundly.
In the high-latitude summer, nights were always brief. After a few hours of rest, the sky was already turning pale. Li Haojun drove the car back home once more, the crisp morning air carrying the scent of plants and morning dew. Qin Wenjing had been too exhausted yesterday and remained lying on the reclined seat.
Li Haojun felt a bit tired too, but he had to push through. Fortunately, the highway was nearly empty at dawn, and he soon arrived home. By then, Qin Wenjing had regained her energy and eagerly headed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Li Haojun returned to his room, lay down on the bed, and seized the chance to rest for a moment. But before ten minutes had passed, he heard Qin Wenjing calling from the kitchen,
Hey, come see! Come see! We're on the news...
Li Haojun was also curious about what had happened and stretched lazily as he got up. Following the sound, he found his way to the kitchen, where Tan Wenjing was watching the morning news, curious about last night's commotion. The local police department was being interviewed by an NBC local reporter.
The background footage shows police footage of the riot, with the local sheriff's deputy answering questions.
"...It was originally a protest march, but some participants resorted to violent tactics, such as vandalizing street facilities and shops, and setting fires..."
"What are the demands of their protest?" the live reporter asked.
The main issue appears to be welfare benefits for unemployed residents at this stage. However, the protesters are predominantly students and young people, who are not the primary beneficiaries of these benefits. Further details are currently under investigation. As soon as the police spokesperson finished speaking, the mayor's office spokesperson immediately added,
Welfare for the unemployed is sufficient to allow those without work to live with dignity. Clearly, God never promised anyone born into this world a life of ease without hard work. Yet our city's finances provide robust support, enabling some to live comfortably without working, pursuing whatever they desire. But you certainly can't expect social welfare to buy you a Ferrari, right?
The sheriff's deputy added immediately, "Preliminary investigations indicate that most of the violence during the protest was perpetrated by individuals from outside the area. However, it remains unclear whether they received financial backing from other individuals or organizations. The relevant investigation is ongoing."
The host, of course, cannot simply toe the official line when hosting a program, and pointed out that...
The powers of the First Amendment are inviolable...
But the deputy sheriff quickly interrupted her. "Yes, but please review the incident footage," he said, playing videos captured from multiple camera angles to demonstrate the legitimacy of the police officers' actions.
The video shows the procession and later footage of police drones dispersing the crowd.
"Pause there," said the spokesperson from the mayor's office, pointing to the police drone footage that captured Li Haojun embracing Qin Wenjing as they looked up at the drone. She emphasized,
"You can voice your demands, but you can't live off the benefits taxpayers provide for you and then go destroy the lives of those who give you those benefits. Yes, play this clip," she said, pointing at the screen. "Look at that couple—what a romantic, beautiful life! Such human beauty shouldn't be destroyed." Her words were filled with righteous indignation.
The host quickly stepped in to smooth things over, "Yes, we are a society governed by the rule of law, and people can express their grievances through proper channels..."
Upon reading this passage, Li Haojun and Qin Wenjing exchanged a knowing smile. Qin Wenjing couldn't wait to say,
Look, look—this part right here, that's you and me," she said, her face radiant with happiness and joy, as if her love had received the world's blessing, utterly fulfilled.
Li Haojun smiled as he gently stroked her head, as if she were a child. Her happiness was his heart's desire.
