Chapter 15 - Dilettante (2)

A student raised his hand, asking the professor a question, "Professor Syprys, why do we need to introduce ourselves when we got to know each other yesterday?"

"Because most of you only interacted with the people you already knew. I want everyone to know who they share a class with, especially because this is the S class. I expect everyone to cooperate under my guidance."

The student who asked the question fell into silence and then sat back down. Students then started introducing themselves one by one, telling what type of magic they have, their hobbies, and things that would let people know more about them. Soon after, his Shin finished introducing himself, and it was Wei An's turn to introduce himself.

Ah. How should I do this? I'll just say whatever comes up in my head.

Wei An stood up gracefully; he then spoke calmly. His voice, though spoken in a low tone, was heard throughout the room. Students shut their mouths, and the room fell into silence; they had been paying attention to Wei An.

"Hello everyone."

...

Ah shit, I feel suffocated. Why is everyone looking at me now of all times?!

"As you all know, I'm Wei An. It's a pleasure to meet you all."

Wei An then sat back down; students then quickly turned away from him. The professor, however, was not satisfied with Wei An's introduction. "Mr. Marion, are you not going to tell us more about yourself?"

Damn it. I don't know what I like! I'll make a fool of myself if I say any more!

Wei An stayed silent, looking away from the professor.

"Well? Not going to say anything?"

Wei An then sighed, standing up again. The student's eyes were on him again, the professor waiting for him to speak. Wei An slowly opened his mouth and began to speak.

"I do not have anything else to say, Professor Syprys, but if you insist, then I spend my time researching about magic and practicing swordsmanship like any other student here."

Why did I say that? I sounded too arrogant!

"Is that so? Then would you elaborate on the research you've done in magic? Surely the 1st in rank has something to show, no? Think of it as a way to show your talent."

This guy... I swear this is punishment! I should watch my word from now on. Well, it's not like what I said was wrong. The original owner of this body did do a lot of research on magic. Thankfully I have his memories now.

"Ah, I don't think I should, sir. However, the title of my research is A Study of Magical Nullification and Its Applications. Though I hope you pardon me for my behavior, sir."

The professor's eyes widened slightly at Wei An's word; he then cleared his throat before speaking again. "Very well, I do hope your behavior improves."

Wei An sat back down, hoping that no one would bother him. He just stayed quiet, leaning in his chair, somehow looking relaxed.

'This child... How did he know about this research? It's being kept a secret by the higher-ups of the magic research department and the court magicians. Is he really the one who discovered nullification magic? '

The professor then cleared his throat, and the introduction of everyone continued. After the introductions, Professor Syprys then gave a short lecture about the start of magic. He discussed the history and briefly introduced the foundations of magic.

"Now, does anyone have any questions?"

A few students raised their hands, asking questions about history and the foundations of magic. The lecture carried on until it was finally time for the class to end.

"Alright, the lecture is over. You may go to whichever class you have next."

Students left their seats to go to their classes, chattering as they walked out of the classroom. The room was almost empty, and Wei An finished packing up his things. As he got up, the professor walked closer to him and spoke, "Let's talk in my office."

Did I do something wrong? I stayed quiet the whole time!

Wei An nodded, following Professor Syprys, who started to walk out of the lecture room. As they arrived, the professor told Wei An to sit on the chair by his office table.

"What did you need, professor?"

"Well, I'll make this quick since you have to attend your next class. However, what you mentioned just now, your research."

"Ah yes? Should I not have said it?"

"Nullification magic is being kept secret, and I, as a top mage myself, was told that it was submitted anonymously. How did you know about it?"

Right, it's being kept secret since the original owner of this body made a deal for it to be kept secret, well, for the owner to be kept secret. I didn't think that the research would be kept secret as a whole.

"Ah, well, sir, I did that research."

"Yes, yes—! You're saying you're the anonymous mage who submitted that paper?!"

"Yes, sir."

"Haa...You have a bright future ahead of you, child. It's good that you've contributed to discovering magic, but was it really alright for you to announce your paper? I was told that the owner of the discovery told for it to be a secret."

"Ah well, there was a bit of a problem with communication. I requested to let me be anonymous, not the whole thing."

"Very well, I will contact the magic association to clear things up. Until then, just try not to cause trouble, child."

"Yes, sir."

This weird old man, is he not shocked? Maybe this world is just so weird that these things are normal.

"Well, who would have thought that it was really someone from the Marion duchy? Much more, it's the son of Duke Marion. Haaa...."

"What do you mean? Professor, is there something I should know about?"

"Well, I am talking to you not as a professor, but as a top mage from the magical research department. There are many rumors going around since an anonymous figure always sent discoveries in magic artifacts, scrolls, or spells. They all came from the Marion duchy's territory, so the department thought it was a mage from the Duke's retainers."

What the hell? That much? I knew the original owner sent a lot of research, but who would have thought it would become a normal thing for the research department of magic?

"Well, if you want to keep yourself anonymous, then so be it. However, I suggest you just take on a pen name for your research; it gives the research department less trouble trying to discover whose research it is."

"Ah...haha... You aren't going to tell anyone, are you?"

"No, if I did, then wouldn't that risk you giving out your discoveries to other departments? I'd much rather have the research department a mess than lose out on new discoveries."

"Well, now that this has been cleared, you may leave."
